The authenticity of the stone can be found in the two references that are made involving Viking nautical measurements. The first reference is that the original camp where 10 men died was located "1 day7's journey north of this stone." That location is Cormorant Lake where 'two rocky islands' would have existed with a higher water table. An old Viking battleax was found there. The second reference is that they had men looking after their ships "14 days north of this island." That equates to 14 days times 75 miles = South Hudson Bay.

As a Scandinavian though it's very nice to see that you care about the heritage. I myself have contacted my relatives in Minnesota that left Sweden in late 19th century, very exiting!
I am addicted to America Unearthed. Such a great show, and very informative. Many people make comments that in each show he never solves the mystery. My perspective on this is that he does, but he is not allowed to say it. We all know how scholars and such are afraid of the truth, especially when it is going to change history.

I am from Kensington and need expose a terrible injustice by our crooked government regarding the rune stone site. Strangely after nearly 100 years of runestone park,
"runestone discovery site" being a county park mainly funded & maintained by the city of Kensington. Mysteriously The Feds stepped in and took ownership and control of the park. They Removed the caretaker and his family, Returned historical buildings that had been donated by the city of Kensington, Stopped all upkeep, and basically closed the whole place down about 10 years ago. Interestingly this was done right after Scott's Wolters findings were concluded. A couple years after it closed a massive road construction project was started on the road leading to the park and to the parks driveway entrance and parking lot area. The work was done by sub contracted temp workers from out of state. They where there for at least 3 summers. Now for some reason the park that has always had very few visitors has a huge 4 lane entrance road that looks like a freeway?
And it is located in an area of the park that used to contain a large wooded hill in direct view from the original Ohmen farm, separated by a small stream and marshy pond that looked as if it was at one time a bigger lake and river. Well that's all gone now, as well as the baseball diamond, volleyball, and horseshoe pits that were all very nice in use before. The hill is completely gone, the water was all pumped out and drained into a different
... area and it was all filled in w/ soil from the hill. I mean this was a massive earthmoving project. It had to have costed tens of millions of dollars. When the project was complete they simply packed up and left so the park sat there for a couple more years completely closed down and empty with overgrown grass and weeds etc. No baseball no camping no more family reunions basically no visitors anymore at all. But it has a hell of entrance road if ever 6 semi trucks need to pass each other when they decide to visit!!! This was obviously a covered up archaeological excavation by the government after they took Scott's report seriously and paid for a ground penetrating radar specialist to scan the park and surrounding areas. They obviously found something really big and important with the GPR for them to have orchestrated the huge road construction project as a cover. Unfortunately most of the towns people and locals are completely ignorant to the fact they just don't understand why the park was shut down for what seems like no reason other then a huge entrance road that was never needed.
Just about a year ago the feds gave the park back to the county and city of Kensington. Sadly the park is now in shambles from what it once was and even more sadly I'm sure important artifacts pertaining to our history have probably been stolen and I lost forever
As far as Scott Walters goes I am still undecided if he had a part in this sketchy plot
I would find it pretty hard to believe that he is completely unaware of the massive changes to the historical area without questioning all the digging

The Kensington stone is a total hoax. This is embarrassing and frankly stupid because some of these people are Viking ancestors with a real history but the Kensington stone is not a part of that history because it's a hoax. The Kensington stone is laughed at in the Scandinavian countries

It was real all along. a few of the characters were unknown at the time and they thought the farmer just made them up as the characters weren't known to any experts or books and then came the discovery of other buried runes in scandinavia with those excact same characters.. It's a MATCH!

Great lecture, am unconvinced it is authentic and it most likely is not. The Viking settlement in Newfoundland, L'Anse aux Meadows, has turned up no similar relics.

I was trying to pin down the exact half-delusional, half-shyster vibe I get from him. The I found out he's been a guest on Coast to Coast and it suddenly made sense.
I think its a fake. 90% of all runestones are found in sweden, a few are found outside of it. These runes when translated use modern swedish, and altough swedish is directly decended from old norse, it proves that the person who made it must have made it recently.

From .49-.55, I did not know or understand one of the words she said. I am from NW, not Midwest, so I am aware how VERY different we are. I.E. - saying the funny (to me) “Hot Dish” over what I wrongly assumed up until seeing Fargo that had come out years ago, that most people or (folks ya know)didn’t use the word Casserole? To be fair, technically Hot Dish is an easier & more descriptive coupling. It’s just so odd that worlds are (IMO-POV) SO SO SOOO different or Ppl from NW would be pronouncing it (Diff’urn’t). The Kensington runestones is either a mordern hoax or it's genuine (1362)
* Geology indicates the inscription is very old; therefore...
1. Language, rune, dialect, dating and grammar MUST be consistent with the 14th century.
But The carving of the runes were done in the late 19th century, about 500 hundred years later then Scott Wolter says. Perhaps he should learn some Swedish, it's not even Norwegian, so he could understand the text written on the stone that was carved about 100 years ago. That's very easy since I as Swede can both read and understand the text carved into the stone.
The text is NOT written with runes from the mid 14th century. The text dialect, grammar and words is NOT from the mid 14th century. It was carved in the late 19th century by some Swedish immigrant!!!!!!
It's written in rune script. No Swedish person who hasn't studied it can read that. Swedish professor Henrik Williams thinks it might be real. And he's an expert. Also, the stone contains rune script that wasn't even discovered when they found it. Not to mention the scientific evidence that proves it's real.

@@asdf3568 That's a complete lie. The thing is a complete joke. Olaf literally had books in Norse writing and his grandson said the family told him it was fake. Thing looks nothing like a 14th century runestones. All runestones had lines between sentences and that umlauts weren't even used until the 18th century.

The runes tell us specifically where they were and where they were "one day's journey north of this stone." (75 miles). The lake with two rocky islands was found 75 miles north at Cormorant Lake. No one has ever addressed that kind of knowledge. Is it possible that a forger knew the Viking references of nautical distances? To say it is a hoax is not supported by the facts.

@Gripen Draken About half the population of Sweden could read in the year 1800, meaning that it's actually more likely that he was able to read than not. It also wasn't a particularly "complex" message either. It was mostly contemporary Swedish (from his time), with a few more archaic features thrown in (Most of which Öhman didn't understand well enough to properly utilize).

Anyone from Scandinavia which knows a little about runestones can tell this is a fake. No runestone has been found which is written like this in straight lines. Runes weren't used much in Scandinavia after 1100 (it was the devils writings). Only very few knew how to write Runes when they were used, so to expect any common traveler could write runes around 1400 is unthinkable. With the translations of the runes it did not resemble old Swedish from 1400 at all (nor Danish or Norwegian). And nobody wrote runestones like that. It always started with names, and then "son of" and ended with what they did. Look at the one from Greenland which is written like we would expect "Erlingur the son of Sigvaths and Baarne Thordars son and Enriði Ás son, Washingday (Saturday) before Rogation Day, raised this mound and rode"
There were some runes on there they said didn't exist. Until we found other runestones AFTER that did have those markings.

His work on the Kensington Runestone is very credible, great work. History Channel is about too much entertainment instead of true history,..agreed.

I'm not gonna say hateful things in here, but I disagree...linguistic analysts by PhD's in Berkeley CA & Boulder CO at least, have disproven this inscription. Yes the stone itself is old, as most stone is, but the inscription is NOT. Set directly beside Old Norse, Old Swedish, and the modern equivalents it is undeniable...it is NOT real. If you've ever watched Mr Walter's show/"documentary" you'll know his analysis is based off geographical evidence, that's what his expertise is in.... not language/not inscriptions, besides his evidence has NEVER lead to a proven certainty even in his own show, circumstantial at best. It is critical to understand the importance of the whole language and other similar languages, not just a dotted R. There are too many errors to list here, about this. I suggest ya'll stop watching the (people selling excitement) History/Discovery Channel and start reading/watching, admittedly boring sometimes, lectures & books that dive deep into all that is known historically of Olaf, and the language used on the stone, not just...a show traveling to awesome places, it's an old stone, and a dotted R we found one place, which was just a part of Sweden when supposedly the inscription would have been made, not "Götland"

Absolutely pathetic. His entire argument is based on the idea that the inscription would have been made at the same time as the rock being split... and he just boldly asserts "whoever carved this stone, took a larger slab of rock and intentionally split it down".
How exactly do you manage to work out that the person who carved it was also responsible for splitting it?

Also... nobody's disputing that the stone is somewhat weathered... but you know when you were a kid and you wanted to make a pirate map and you thought "This doesn't look right being on fresh clean white paper", so then you'd crinkle it a bit, tear a corner off, maybe stain it with coffee or tea... You can do the same thing with stone with lemons, vinegar and basically any mild acidic. Whoever carved it probably had that moment of thinking "Gee, this looks too fresh."
I do think it's very sad to hear what happened to Olof's family, they didn't deserve that. We can be certain it's a hoax, and even if it's most likely that Olof was responsible, we can't be certain that he was. It could have been made by someone else even if he discovered it. It really doesn't matter who was responsible. It's just undeniably written in modern Swedish. Don't say "The geology doesn't lie, so linguists need to work harder." You're outnumbered, I think you need to work harder. :')

Logically it’s clearly authentic. There’s just too many connections with other similar carvings across America, Greenland, Scotland which are genuine.

The Sinclairs were deeply involved in Scottish Rite freemasonry which claimed to be started in Scotland after Robert the Bruce gave the Templars refuge. Is it starting to make sense?
If it was fake it would have not achieved such notoriety over the years. None other than the Smithsonian said it was the most important geological find in North America. A battleax was found at Cormorant Lake.

We Americans have vast quantities of history. Your knowledge of American history is zero. I AM half Scots-Irish and half Danish. The history of Europe is older than the history of Japan, and it is a part of our American history. The American Native Peoples have been here for 10,000 years and more. Many Asian people are Americans too.
