It never ceases to amaze me, Pennsylvania is the land of plenty for sourcing. Poppies are symbolic of remembrance, after WWI they were widely associated with Armistice Day (Nov. 11). Celebrating the end of war and later honoring the veterans of both WWI & WWII, you now know it as Veterans Day.

    • @carolp8243

We use to celebrate it as Armistice's Day when I was growing up. They renamed it to Veterans Day in 1954.

Red Poppies were the symbol of the losses during WWI. John Maccrae wrote a poem at the time that came to be a symbol as well.
The first verse goes right to it. Many porcelain items from the 1910's through to the mid 1930's had poppies. So many men were lost during that war.
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

I visited the Flanders fields, and yes, I think it was and has continued to be a symbol of remembrance...here in America, somewhere around Memorial Day, the American Legion or some other veterans organization sold small paper poppies to wear on Memorial Day...I remember buying one (they took donations) and wearing it to school...During my visit to Belgium I visited the memorial to John McCrae in a British cemetery, and once again read the poem displayed there ... very meaningful and thought-provoking.

I rarely comment..but I love shopping with you..the dog you picked up made of fabric looked like it was home made ..There was a Butterick pattern out for this dog in the 70/80 when I was doing a lot of dressmaking ,it may have been Simplicity but I am more certain the other as I preferred their patterns..Another thing How to tell if a designer bag is genuine..The Zipper on the bag and all the fittings usually have the name stamped into the metal, even the internal zips have this on..In some bags lining is printed to but many use floral or plain ..Made in China ..most designer bags are made abroad it’s cheaper for them then they make more profit ..A lot have a printed or sewn label with details inside and these usually carry a serial number for the bag and you can check up on it ..I have a number in my collection a little weakness of mine..Some like shoes I like designer bags ..Also not all designer bags are leather ..Some of the dearest are only P U does not stop them charging £100s of pounds for them..I hope this helps you a little as it’s a shame to miss out on one when you can make a lot on EBay..That’s what funded my love of handbags lol..Have Hun 😀xx

Also liked the colorful jars with roosters on them you passed up. You're much more polite than I am with waiting until the other person walks away. Poppies are symbols of those who lost their lives in war. It began with the famous poem written by a Canadian physician and poet after the death of his friend in 1915, John McCrae. A poet who himself died in January 1918. The poem begins with the poppies that bloom in the fields where the dead have fallen.
"In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses row on row..."
In England Remembrance day is also called Poppy day and poppies are everywhere, crocheted by people and used as decoration on the cenotaphs commemorating the dead, or artists creating sculptural works using poppies, etc., and that is why we wear felt poppies in our lapels around Remembrance day.
Remember those who died to save us from tyranny and to prevent war from happening again. Too bad that last part hasn't worked so well.

The local Goodwill stores implemented a policy (about 2 years ago, now) of sorting out the items that had designer labels, was any type of better costume jewelry, semi-precious or precious metals and gemstones jewelry, or were collectables pottery, glassware, etc. I can only assume those items are ending up in the online store. About a year ago the stores began displaying pottery, vases, etc. On shelves around the store walls and high, out of reach. So, yes. Feeling envious when I watch. ☹️

Is it a bad thing when you just went to the Goodwill bins / spent 3 hours looking thru everything and looking thru it again / then when I come home and looks at what I purchased --- I can't remember alot of the stuff? Maybe cause I went thru so much stuff / it was all a blur BUT what fun blur it was!!!

Monday I found a Haeger planter. I was curious to how much another like it was going for but I have yet to find another one online. I noticed the prices were all over the place on some of the same pieces.

Wow, some really great finds! I never see the larger pieces of Wedgwood in thrift stores, even damaged. And that rooster!

The space toy looked like a bank drive up carrier which you send through the tube. Looked older with a side opening. The older the more $.

How come you don't bring a few sheets of bubble wrap when you source? I always bring a few sheets with me. They're easy to carry in and I don't worry so much about that wonky cart breaking my stuff. 😹😹🤕

If you forget to bring some, or if you find yourself impromptu shopping, simply go to the section selling linens. Choose a few placemats, table runners, thin blankets, etc. and use them as padding while you shop. When you are ready to check out, simply return them to their original department.
