    The Home Free men are wonderful singing in the band or singing solo. They have amazing natural talent polished by years of hard work. Bring Him Home is a perfect vehicle for Austin's voice, and he does it so well.
    Nobody, but nobody, sings like the Home Free men.

    Just from watching your reactions, I could tell that Austin did this song justice from an expert opinion. From a non expert watching it the first time, my goose bumps told me that this was perfect. I really love your reactions, it helps me learn so much about the voice.

    In many of his videos, Austin sings challenging parts SITTING DOWN. But, for this one he was standing, indicating for me the intense challenge of singing this amazing piece of music, and just killing it.

    • @patriciamcl54
      @patriciamcl54 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's worth remembering that in all MVs the song is recorded twice, once in studio and the other where you want to be seen in the video. The studio version is what you hear and that's usually recorded standing up. However Austin can sing easily while sitting, as seen in many live recordings. For this one, it wouldn't fit the story.

    I hope he continues his work with Home Free AND his own music, so that we get the benefIt of both. He also has a group with Tim Foust from Home Free called Sweet & Low Music Co. that does some great music. great reaction, thank you for sharing.

  • @antrazitaj5209

    Austin studied musical theather. But given that he always wanted to be part of a band or a group and not a solo artist per se I can't see him going back for that. Now he has the opportunity to sing in a vocal group and have his solo suff and his band stuff as side projects

    • @nightthornkvala94132
      @nightthornkvala94132 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Austin goes solo, as does Tim. He has videos with one friend of another on piano or guitar. Austin and Tim front their "backyard bash" group called Sweet + Low Music Co. consisting of family and friends they've performed with through the years. All of Home Free has something outside, whether its a podcast or playing D&D or playing with their kids and spending quality time with the wife.

    Austin is so suited to musical theatre that even the poor cellphone recordings of the live performances are beautiful. I never tire of his pure voice. And now I know what "passagio" is! I am so glad you reacted to this. I think this is Austin's very best performance. I loved it all, but when he gently and sweetly sang the line "give him peace" I started to cry. When he sang that last note, I got chills. I love Home Free (I've seen them in concert three times) but I don't think Austin will get the recognition he deserves unless he goes out on his own.

    • @nightthornkvala94132

      Well, he's not stuck just with Home Free. He has solo videos and some with his buddies Sebastien (like here) and with Steven. He also sings with Sweet + Low with Tim, Sebbie, Chris & Luisa Marion and their dad (Tim's in-laws), Jeffrey and several others. I would love to see him duet with Peter Hollens. Or maybe he could get with Peter Barber or Eric Hollaway for Drunken Sailor or Wellerman. That'd be a wonderful contrast in their voices.

    William, I’m not at all musically trained, so much of your reaction flew over my head. However, I love your energy and passion for music! I’m a huge HF fan and Austin is certainly a bright young man with so very much talent. I don’t have a favorite member, because when I listen to each of them shine in their own way, they each rise to that level of amazing talent. I recognize that AB seems to be your favorite amongst the guys, it I’d encourage you to take a deeper dive and showcase some of the other singers. Rob may be even better than Austin in a different way. Tim is a freak of nature and is incredible. And young Adam Chance’s smoky voice has some glorious rasp and flair that is also quite unique. Be some to give them all some appreciation and a good listen. Love your channel and your reactions!

    I love your reactions and how you explain the technical aspects. I first heard Austin do this at a concert only recorded by someone's camera phone. I thought it was beautiful then and wanted him to record it like this. He said it took him many months of practice before he could get it where he was satisfied with the performance. All I know is it was worth the wait and I've heard it many, many times now. He sings with such feeling that it can make me shed a tear almost every time .😢 His voice is magnificent and so unique for me. Thanks again for your reaction and love of HomeFree .❤🥰

    Love how much you respect Austin. He's a rare talent, but so humble and generous. He obviously knows he's good, but he never gets a big head about it. That seems to be true for all of Home Free. They're all good and they know it, but they're such fans of each other. I've seen interviews where when asked what song he'd really love Home Free to do, he'll throw out some bass lead piece that he wants to hear Tim or Chance do. He had to talk Rob into Nessun Dorma with him. And then you turn around and watch an interview with Tim, and he has this whole list of stuff he wants Austin, Rob, or Chance to do, and so on for each of the guys. They just admire each other so much.
    When Home Free met Austin on a cruise where he was with the ship's entertainment company and Home Free were the featured guest entertainers, this was the song he performed that made them fall in love with him. He fell in love with them, too, and apparently spent hours in his cabin with Tim sharing songs they'd written or were fans of. Fortunately for all concerned, their founding tenor was wanting to leave the group because he and his wife had just started a family and his dad was very ill, so they found Austin at the perfect time.

      Yes, Sebastian is really good. There are 2 ways for a pianist to flourish: as a soloist (Diva) or an accompanist extradinaire. Both require equal, but different, talents. Sebastian is completely in tune with Austin, not just following him, but keeping in step with him through all the twists and turns of a performance. Divas, in my experience, cannot do that.

    • @nancyholter5646
      @nancyholter5646 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@ElizabethRoss-uj8rl Being even a decent accompanist is hard (BTDT), getting to Sebastian's level requires lots of work and lots of mind melding with your vocalist/instrumentalist. LOTS of work. And I agree that a Diva is not wired for that.

    Another excellent reaction, Will. Having watched the development of all the boys in Home Free from touring 300 gigs a year at county fairs etc where they sounded boring and tired and uninspired to participating in and winning the Sing Off in season 4 where they were challenged and pushed to dig deep and develop their vocal abilities,to take risks and to leap well beyond their comfort zone in their performances to the point where now Austin can produce a performance like this.
    Makes me wonder how many young talents never receive that push or challenge, never realize their true potential through fear of failure, fear of success, or lack of drive and desire to explore the limits of their abilities and have no desire to leave their comfort zone.
    What would have happened with Austin and the others if they never entered that contest that changed their attitudes and dragged them out of the rut they were trapped in.
    You have been through it yourself. What does a young performer need besides prodigious talent and not being waylaid by puberty to survive and be successful in a very difficult business. What advice would you offer to a younger starting out.
    😂

    • @BangkokVoiceCoach
      @BangkokVoiceCoach  ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Such an extraordinary question that you present. I didn’t see the talent show on tv. was unaware that it was this process that changed them so much for the better. Clearly they felt it was there “one big chance” and they had better grasp it. Opportunity knocks…
      It’s such a good point, though. Is the talent and potential within us infinite? One thing I do know for sure: self-sabotage is one of our greatest enemies. In other words, it is WE who hold ourselves back, partly because we fear success but also because we don’t believe we deserve it.

    • @patriciamcl54
      @patriciamcl54 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@BangkokVoiceCoach It's interesting that one of the judges on the TV Sing Off, Jewel, made the same point to all the contestants, that we think we're competing against others but really we're competing against ourselves, as she said "to find the greatness within."

    • @BangkokVoiceCoach
      @BangkokVoiceCoach  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I suspect his “country twang” could be his natural accent? Does he speak that way?

    • @kristindunstan172
      @kristindunstan172 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@BangkokVoiceCoach , yes, he does. That is actually my point. He was taught how to sing without it and now he has the option to use it or not use it depending on the song. For this one, he used a more neutral sound as opposed to using a lot of that natural twang he has when he sings many of the Home Free songs.
      Apparently, this is one of the songs he was singing on the cruise ship when Hime Free met him. The story goes that they asked him to bring that natural country twang back when he joined the group.

    Thanks William - didn't know of Austin and now I do - and it's a while now since I had heard a rendition of Bring him Home - last one was someone on BGT a few years back - that last note sounds like an A vowel which probably allows him to thin out his vocal chords a little bit more so that he can reach it more comfortably - still so much for me to learn about vocal techniques and when and how the artists/performers use them and why - onwards and upwards...

    Thank you so much, William, for another entertaining and educational reaction. I knew you'd love this. Austin had been singing this for a long time and finally decided he was ready. I know he's doing what makes him happy but I can't help thinking that he would have been a wow on Broadway. He recently said that he had expected to start his solo career several years later than he did (lockdown intervened, giving him time with Steven Martinez and with his lady on the camera to start putting up covers). So he had been thinking about going it alone. Comparisons aren't terribly helpful but I prefer Austin's version of BHH to Alfie Boe, though it's doubtful whether anyone can top Colm Wilkinson. Austin would make a great Curly in Oklahoma - wouldn't you love to hear that glorious voice singing unaccompanied as the show begins -"There's a bright golden haze on the meadow ..."
    Btw in your wanderings on TH-cam, you may come across some recordings Austin did on another channel. Two are particularly interesting: "Your bed", which is pure musicals style and which Austin sings totally without his accent - I think just to show he could do it! It's charming. The other, Empty House, is for blues fans like me perhaps the best thing he has ever done, pure raw emotion but with his excellent technique keeping it where he wants it.
    Could we say a word about the incredibly talented Sebastien Douyon, brilliant accompanist (see him watch Austin like a hawk) but also a brilliant arranger and composer, who like Austin seems to be able to turn his hand to anything.

    • @nancyholter5646
      @nancyholter5646 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Austin's ability to change his voice depending on the need is remarkable. The difference between just "Your Bed" and "Empty House" is stunning, but listen Friday (unless you already have seen it) to his "can't get more country" in Delta Dawn. He can make his voice cry, he can make it rejoice.

    I haven't looked yet but I'd love to hear your analysis of Bobby Hatfield's (Righteous Brothers) live performance of Unchained Melody on the Andy Williams show in 1965.

    So, I am curious; have you listened to Austin and Rob Lundquist sing Nessun Dorma?

    If I’m not mistaken, it’s actually being sung in A major, not A-flat.

    I don't know if you're aware that Austin has left Home Free to spend more time with his wife Amberly. (I think he'd really do well in musical theatre productions but I'm not sure he's ever going to do so!).

      I knew he planned to leave. It’s very difficult being part of an all male singing group, believe me. I always felt Austin was the voice of Home Free. Such an effortless high tenor.

      @@BangkokVoiceCoach - The newest member of Home Free is Adam Bastien. Although I'm sure he'll be great, he won't be Austin . . .
