    Each time he does this I think of Jewel telling him, during the Singoff, that she thought he could reach higher but was almost afraid to go there. Well, Jewel he went there. Thank you so much.

    I love that you and Hannah have the same reaction to notes you weren't expecting.
    - Mouth falls open
    - flailing arms
    - "HOL' UP NO NO *NO* REPEAT THAT WHAT DID YOU DO"
    - *repeats part*
    - Mouth falls open
    - "that was amazing you are a God/goddess and I am unworthy of your talents"
    While I absolutely enjoy the break down of how the people accomplish what they're doing (i love to sing so I like to know how to do the thing), the total freak outs over the thing they're doing is definitely my favorite part of voice teachers reacting.

    Thanks Mortius for your informative reaction to Austin's exceptional cover of Bring Him Home. The thing of it is with Austin Brown and Home Free too you never know exactly what you're going to get, good for sure but you can't predict it. Unexpectedly awesome this time for sure, even while expecting the unexpected, Austin's performance was nothing short of spectacular. You can't expect an "Austin Brown" style. He approached this song from somewhere that I was not expecting and the simplicity of the presentation was stunning, just Austin solo and Sebastien on the piano. I had to play this about a dozen times in a row to even start to grasp the magnitude of this performance.

    Austin has a music theater background and it shows in his ability to grab our attention and emotions. Prior to this release, I'd only heard him do this in a video done by someone in the crowd at a Home Free concert. It is worth a listen, just to hear how well Home Free does this as a group. Austin's performance in that one is still wonderful, but it's been said he was sick, and still did it so well. In any case, Austin is AMAZING in this rendition! You did better than I thought you would, I had guessed this would take you a full 30 minutes to get through! Lol! 🤣❤

    When I was back in my soloing days, I had a chance to sing with a professional organist on her pipe organ. I knew she was a perfectionist, and I was no musician. I wasn't good at reading music. Finally she stopped me and said, " You are not to wait for me; you sing it the way you want to, and I will follow you". What an amazing difference that made! Watching Sebastion reminded me of my early training with Elfreida.😊

    Home Free saw him in a theatrical performance on a cruise ship they both were on. Austin studied musical theater in college. They wanted him and he always wanted to do a capella. He is extremely talented. Beautiful voice and beautiful expression of this song.

      On the cruise where the guys met him, he wasn't in the theatre entertainment but was featured lounge singer. At that time they had no vacancies and made him wait for 6 months before they condescended to give him an audition. Rob was the only person kind enough to keep in touch and let him know there was a vacancy. I often think that if they hadn't taken him on, he might have been a big star, because as you say, he is amazingly talented. He is also a fine actor, which helps him communicate emotion so well.

    Hi Mortius. I really really enjoyed your reaction to this version of Bring Him Home by Austin. Being a performer yourself, I can always count on you to understand, explain AND appreciate the difficulty and beauty of everything you hear. I laughed out loud when you reacted to that last word. I know it blew me away (and still does), but your experience of iit was everything I had hoped it would be. The beautiful tone he starts it off with is what gives me goosebumps. So glad I could share this beautiful experience with you. Some 'operatic' reactors don't know what they are missing out on. Till next HF or AB. Hope your wife enjoys this.

    Thanks so much for your great reaction and amazing insight to this music and his voice. The second or third time I watched this video, after I picked my jaw up off the floor again, I thought "oh, Mortius is going to looooooove this! Not a Les Miz fan, that's just not my thing. But Austin's rendition of this song is beyond amazing. I've watched the video dozens of times -- and that's not counting reaction videos and just the song on my iPod -- and every time he's given me the chills by the fifth word, a burning of tears behind my eyes by line three. That last beautiful high not always brings me to tears...every time. (Why did I hear those last two words in Tim's voice?) I think this video must be the first time I really noticed how expressive and beautiful Austin's hands are. Could the beauty of the song have anything to do with that? Who knows. But I kept watching his hand in Unchained Melody. Wow. Thanks again. I'm gonna go watch his video one more time before starting my day. Only one time...I promise. Uh, yeah...

    He is singing this version an Octive lower then he did on a live show where he mentioned two people in the audience that had been on the cruise ship with him. A truer version of the opera. Plus he changed the ending on this.
    Sabastian is his best friend and he usually accompienes on all his singles. Super talented

    • @patriciamcl54
      @patriciamcl54 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      How did he change the ending? I find it hard to believe that Austin of all people would feel the need to change the key by as much as an octave. This version lies pretty high in his already high voice. From what i remember of the (poor) live recording, he was clearly not well and decidedly "pitchy" at times. In a concert performance, there is no "true" version. I think if you find a recording of Colm Wilkinson singing this in concert, it will be in yet another key, whatever felt most comfortable.

I loved the part where you looked like where you melted into his singing. I do every time i listen to it. It brings me to tears every time also. And his high note? Perfection says it all.

  • @patriciamcl54
    @patriciamcl54 2 ปีที่แล้ว +19

    Austin's voice has undergone a transformation in recent months. He is no longer the gawky kid with a natural gift and excellent training but a mature artist with real heft behind the voice. I know that at some time in the last year he didn't sing for three months (perhaps someone here may know the reason?) and I guess he went back to first principles, his original training. His control is immaculate and he's now able to fill the top notes with enormous sweetness as well as power.
    He likes to work the silences, so we follow every thought as he expresses it and uses rubato very well to introduce an almost conversational tone - here, conversation with God. Comparisons are not helpful, but I must say that this version is easily the equal of Colm Wilkinson's and personally I prefer it to that of Alfie Boe. I know Austin wants to stay in Home Free, and says he would like to remain "And Friends" in Tim Foust's concerts for ever, but his voice gives so much pleasure to everyone who hears it that I can't believe that there isn't something bigger waiting for him.
    Thank you so much for an excellent reaction, helping us understand why we love this performance so much.

    Totally off subject but I love your tie tieing. Some years ago I looked up how to tie a tie and was fascinated by how intricate they can be.

    I found the breaks between words jarring at the beginning, because my experience of Bring Him Home is Colm Wilkinson singing it. But once I got used to Austin's different pacing, it was beautiful. Just like everything the artists from Home Free do, even in their solo endeavours, Austin and his friend/accompanist Sebastian bring their own interpretation to this cover. And I so often prefer their covers to the originals.

    I'm sure at this point you have gone back and watched/listened to this many times. It really is one of the best musical theater songs of all time. I'm not sure if you noticed the breath control though. If you watch/listen close you will notice that during the first verse, he didnt take a breath during the long suspensions. He snuck some breaths in between the stanzas. I enjoyed your use of the Hugh Jackman version to compare. While his voice isnt the absolute best, Mr. Jackman put a lot of his character's emotion in every song he sings which makes him an incredible music theater performer.
