- A fantastic hat trick by Queen's Park Rangers forward Don Givens gave the Republic Of Ireland a 3-0 victory over the U.S.S.R. on 30th October 1974. This game was a UEFA European Championship qualifier.
I was at this match. I was 8 years old, first International match. Dalyer was jammed that day, on the terraces, so my dad lifted me onto his shoulders for the whole game, so protect me and to give me a good vies. he said in later years that he couldn't see a thing that day :-) . He's still going strong, but he doesn't go to the matches any more. Still, we got to Euro 88, Italia 90 (just him, I was broke), and Japan-Korea 2002. Me and my dad bond over football, amongst other things, and this match is where it all started for both of us. Thanks for the post, it means a lot to me.
Same here. I was 8. lifted on my dad's shoulders behind the School end. It was a dangerous place to be in hindsight.That stand roof held out. Givens went one better a year later

Ольшанский ошибся. Дзодзуашвили в том матче не играл, он как раз в 1974 году закончил выступать в сборной. Самый высокий защитник в том матче Капличный 180 см. Никулин, Ольшанский, Матвиенко и Ловчев еще ниже.

The Soviet press described Ireland as a selfless team that put their soul into their game.
They especially praised Giles as the player who directed the game and as a model of hard work.
In contrast, they described their own team as appearing confused and lacking cohesion.
They also praised him as fine model of the Socialist worker and awarded him the order of Lenin. 👍

2. I've actually visited the USSR.
That's what I offer to the discussion, so you do all the internet research you want but it just remains abstract so not only do I have a better sense of humour I'll always know more than you.
