I know you’re critiquing yourself but I think you danced this beautifully, considering you sprained your ankle during dress rehearsal!

I wasn't expecting the fish dives to be that fast, I don't understand how you can do that fast of a pirouette into a fish dive perfectly, gorgeous, sleeping beauty is always one of my favorites and you two do it so well!! especially for a sprained ankle

Those fish dives were amazing. Tempo far too fast, as you say, for no reason really. Your candor, too, amazing, Kathryn!

This was the first ballet I ever saw, performed by the Australian Ballet in the Sydney Opera house.
    It was AMAZING! 😍
The fish tail dives were one of my favourite moves of the show.
It also had an absolutely BEAUTIFUL set design.

Caleigh Brown surprisingly I find that American companies are some of the most mysterious with their content in a time of social media. Royal ballet is leading the forefront by being extremely open with sharing the arts but American companies like nycb and especially ABT barely have anything online.

  • @tchaikoffkey

I don’t know how true this is, but I heard that the extremely fast tempos actually came from the original pit orchestra conductor that would just ignore the dancers and conduct his own tempi. NYCB just became known for it as their dancers had to adapt to match it

    • @philzmusic8098
      @philzmusic8098 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

I doubt that. Balanchine was a highly trained musician: he set the tempos. In his own ballets, if you're not using his fast tempos you're not really dancing Balanchine at all. (Can you hear me over there in Moscow and Leningrad?)

  •  ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Amazing video 😊
Regarding the tempo... I recently saw a documentary that talked about the Ratmansky reconstruction and they musicians talking about how the faster tempos are supposed to be played... Like... No.. The whole reason the Tchaikovsky ballet scores exist is because of dancers... That's what the music was written for and that's how the music should be played... So that dancers can actually dance... That's what people pay to see...

This is beautiful Katie! At my studio, my teacher has been talking about how the lines of gender in ballet are becoming more blurred -- for example, boys are taking pointe classes and girls are starting to take jumping classes, because they help with technique. A boy at my studio is taking pointe class and we are starting to learn jumps traditionally done by males, such as switch jumps. I think that these are good techniques to have, but there are other perspectives too. Could you address this in a video please? I would love to know what other dancers think of this.

This is beautiful! I'm glad someone filmed it. It's funny to me that you say Tyler is a 'leftie' when in figure skating he'd be considered a 'righty'. (I am not a figure skater not a dancer, wish I'd begun either journey as a child.) Figure skaters typically rotate counter clockwise and THOSE are the ones considered righties. If you skate and jump and spin clockwise you're considered a leftie. This also made me think of Katherine Healy and how she was a 'leftie' in ballet!! Love your commentary on your performances. Totally blowing through them all!! Sooo happy for your Miami experience - can't wait to see you! Sorry so long of a comment!!

You're so amazing! Beautiful dancing. I think I commented before about how I followed NYCB's series narrated by SJP almost RIGHT after you'd left the company so you were only recently on my radar because I watched Andrew East's Redirected podcast with you. I'm now obsessed with ballet again (watching, I'm not a dancer). I have actually been neglecting my figure skating obsession somewhat (again, not a skater - though I tried!). The point of my comment aside from giving you a glowing review as a human, dancer, social media queen and all around great spirit is that in ballet a leftie is what in figure skating is a rightie. That is all. xoxo Congrats on your debut in Miami! I WILL make it to a performance of yours one day. I have young kids but I love Miami and love your dancing. (I just wrote a short story, sorry!)

Hi Katie, I have a question for another Q&A. You mentioned earlier that a dream role of yours would be Manon. Are you referring to the title role in Manon Lescaut or do you mean the ballet the lady of the camellias where Manon acts as the Alter ego of the leading lady Marguerite Gautier? By the way I imagine you‘d be a great Prudence in the lady of the camellias.

    • @kathryn_morgan

I actually understand the thing where a performance is easier at the end of the whole show- I sang in an opera in college, and the climax notes, by then, were oddly easy. The fatigue of the show somehow made the end scenes easier. (Mind you, I was in the chorus, not a main role! My part was easier- sorta...)
