  • Hey Everyone! Welcome back for my review on the Retroid Pocket 2s. Now, I took a little time trying to test out this device after my initial Impressions video. In that time, everyone seemed to be going a little bonker balls about this device. However, I just kinda didn’t quite get on that bandwagon. Stick around and I’ll let you know why.

@2:32 you talk about a glitch about not recognizing triggers. This can be fixed by going to system settings > handheld settings > input > L2/R2 mode and setting to Both.

I love how honest this review is, and it has so many useful things to consider about the RP2S that I never really thought much about. Thanks so much for sharing this!

I just honestly love the old retroid form factor, and the 2s is it. Sadly I don't actually have the 2s lol.

Something I should mention about the joycon style sticks on other handhelds. The newer handhelds by anbernic and Retroid use the special hall effect joycon sticks. Not sure if they're the ones made by Guililit or a knockoff, but they are indeed hall effect. Or at least the ones on the 405m are. So basically, while they don't have full range of motion, they won't develop drift. The sticks on the Retroid pocket 2S look to be something more custom made, since they have that full range of motion, though.

I love how all the stock photos show this nice crisp and clean clear green shell, but when you get it in person there is this huge brownish/olive colored rectangle in the lower right that looks UGLY and sticks out like a sore thumb.

Had mine about a week, I really enjoy it. I have enjoyed tinkering with it to get everything set up, and still have some tweaks to go before it is perfect. That being said I know most people may not want to do all the work needed to turn it into a retro gaming device and would prefer going with something already presettup like the RG405 line. Way easier as you just turn the thing on and start playing games. But if you like the set up process as much as actually playing games then it’s a load of fun.

I think there's something to be said about that. There is a joy to customizing all the little details on your device to truly make it yours. That being said, obviously not for everybody. But in my case, I definitely enjoy that aspect and will probably spend tons of time getting this thing tuned to my tastes, and I'm itching to start that process!

Some people buy it because of the form factor, so it's very much valid. It fits in a pouch bag 😊

Yep the boxy look is the best looking hand held for sure. Once this gets a 4 inch screen it will just be a perfect design and features

Good review. Since I have a few retro handhelds at this point I passed on this one and went with the Powkiddy RGB30 due to it's unique screen which works well for a lot of games I play - GB, GBC, Pico-8 and GBA(not as good for ths one but good enough..). My other retro handhelds are getting a bit old at this point (Anbernic RG350M and 351P plus Retroid Pocket 2 and also 2+) but not ready for another yet. When there is a decently priced handheld that plays ALL Gamecube and PS2 games well I will start considering a new one.

      @RetroFunTech  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Thanks! I have a RGB30 on the way. I'm excited to see how Arcade and Pico8 look on it.
If you are happy with what you have, no need to upgrade. The handheld market is getting a bit saturated. Great for videos/reviews but crazy for consumers.

The Retroid 2S is my favorite emulator form factor and aspect ratio, vs the wider screens on the RP3 and RG505 that I Had. It’s most comfortable to hold and I would rather play my old school Gameboy , PS1 and N64 games on one device than a RG35XX or Miyoo

For dead cells you can change the text resolution making it actually legible, its in the settings

Deadcells - Change it to HD in the settings while using your phone as a guide through the menu. The texts will become legible.

This was what feels like way too long ago and too many dab hits ... I bought the Retroid Pocket 2+ when it dropped. I got two and set up one for my brother. I specifically remember setting up a configuration so that everything besides the front end and standard installation saved to the SD card and not to the internal storage.
I also remember the Retroid Pocket emulators were configured for the device so I didn't have to map everything. But I also bought and downloaded Google store apps as well, because certain store emulator apps worked better.
The RP2s seems like a great improvement to the 2+.

UH you can actually move apps to the external storage, they just automatically install on the internal.

Does it give a list of popular emulators to download at setup? I personally have a rp3+ that prompted a list of main emulators but I bought a rp2s as a gift for someone. Thanks for the info, I should set it up before I give it to him then

I feel like you're missing the point of why so many people love this handheld so much. It's not perfect or even better than the Pocket 3+, but it doesn't have to be. Its price makes it very accessible and the features and performance it packs were unheard of at this price point before. Show me another emulation handheld for $100 USD before shipping and taxes that has hall effect sticks, or analog triggers, or an SoC with A75 cores, or even good standby time (all of them are Linux-based and sleep is broken on those Linux-based systems and drains way too much power). There aren't any. There also weren't any that had displays larger than 3.5" before 2S launched for that matter, so I don't feel like going too hard on 2S for this is justified.
I'm sure it allowed many people who simply wouldn't be comfortable with paying as much as Retroid Pocket 3+ cost to enter the world of emulation handhelds. Retroid Pocket 3+ 3/32GB with the cheapest shipping option would have cost me $200 USD total and I decided against buying it because it was simply too much. On the other hand, Retroid Pocket 2S cost $140 USD total and the time when it became available for purchase coincided with a high point for my local currency, so I decided to pull the trigger on it and I've been loving it ever since it arrived. Sure, the shipping time (or rather the time that I had to wait before Retroid even shipped it because the first orders were preorders, once shipped it only took 9 days to arrive) was quite long and it took about one and half months, but I feel like it was worth it in the end. You also have to understand that they are quite a small company and the interest in 2S was much greater than expected. Still, this is no AYN Loki situation so I don't feel like it's that bad.
The complaint about setup difficulty holds true for any Android handheld from Retroid Pocket 2S to AYN Odin, but the benefits of Android still outweigh this in my opinion. The only real area where I feel this 2S could be seriously improved is ergonomics, I agree that the shape is too squarish and if the corners were more rounded it would be much more comfortable to hold.

Thank you for video, i was watching other reviews on this device and they all talk about how great it is. Thanks for the warning about it not being out of the box ready, must be set up and configured, other reviewers didn't mention that. I own a Miyoo mini plus and its easy to use. What horizontal hand held do you recommend thats easy to set up like the miyoo and that can play beyond PS1? I though this RP2S is the one but its too complicating for me.

Bonker balls ??! Lmao…I’ve been thinking of getting a Retroid pocket 2 plus for a lil while. Now it’s the s. Not sure if I want to get it any longer. Small screen, boxy unergonomic design. (I have small hands btw) I usually don’t have any issues setting up software but not something I look forward to. I appreciate the pros and cons and honesty with this review. I was on the fence, and I think I just fell over. I may just get the Odin or Odin 2. Don’t worry Dreamcast, I didn’t neglect you :):)

You bought a 4:3 retro handheld, with low end specs (32g internal, 3g ram) and based your opinion on the performance of every system it was very obviously not designed for. 1/10 review, the RP2S should be a benchmark for 4:3 handhelds.

I was thinking this too. I just ordered one and plan on playing everything up to some GameCube and PS2 games. If I need more I’ll use my Steam Deck.

I love getting a female perpective on Retro Handhelds, its so refreshing. It is such a male dominated space on TH-cam. Awesome review! I hope your channel grows very fast. I have been looking to buy my first handheld and stuck between this 2s and the 3+, would be awesome to compare both, so us first buyers can go for the right device.

    Sorry to be negative but
After watching most rp2s reviews yours was the least helpful and the reasons u have for not liking it were really one offs
    I appreciate your thoughts but
I felt like I knew more about this handheld then you did and I still haven’t got my
And you must have know it wasn’t a plug and play thing
    Anyway
Sorry again for the negative comment

The best is at this point is a freaking laptop when you’re in the hotel, a console/pc at home and a switch while travelling
The only retro handled I will consider are the ones in 50 dollar range but also in that case you can just play through your phone. I’m sick of retro handled releases that are really mini upgrades every 2 months.

With even mid range phones approaching $1k, I'd much rather risk dropping a $100-200 handheld solely used for entertainment vs a fragile glass slab that is virtually integral to thriving in a modern society.
I mean with your approach is guess you could have a lan line for home, a fax machine to replace texts, a satellite bag phone for one the road, a pager to act as notifications, and a coop of carrier pidgeons for when the emps hit and all that shit gets fried.

What do you mean by "mythical" $99 price point? It is $99. Nobody said you have to go buy an extra SD card to put your illegally downloaded games you've never owned on it. 32 GB model has about 25 GB free, which is enough to put a decent amount of games on it. You could fit the entire library of Sega Genesis, Super Nintendo, regular Nintendo, Game Boy, Game Boy Advance, and Game Gear in that and still have over 19 GB left.
