in my opinion this is the best possible interpretation of a portable console, clamshell-shaped. It combines portability with a large screen, you can house excellent hardware and an excellent battery because the space available is very good, the screen and controls are protected when the console is closed, it slips well into the pockets and the rectangular shape and compact size increase its portability. In the future, the retroid, if it will be successful and I hope so, will have to think about further reducing the thickness.

Nah they screwed this up, apparently the r1 and r2 are not easy to access because the screen is in the way, there was enough space on the face of the unit for the speakers but the left SO much blank space and stuck the speakers under facing away from the user, shipped with Android 11 when the Anbernic rg405m shipped with 12, and using sliders vs real analog sticks was a huge mistake as they could have fit them given this thing is already way way too thick. Combine all that with cheap plastics and a noisy fan and this isn't appealing in the slightest. RP3+ is vastly superior even though its D-Pad is garbage, and the rg405m is about perfect especially with its 4:3 screen and native gamecube / PS2 screen resolution.
@@TeamGun I have no doubts about what you are saying, it is not absolutely perfect and can be improved a lot, the anbernics are qualitatively another world, I just hope that anbernic produces a flip model similar to the retroid but with its proverbial build quality because for me the clamshell console are fabulous when they are well designed !!
Thanks ETA for the initial review! I am also a big fan of the clam shell design. Next video can you show how sturdy the clam shell is. For instance the 3ds was more sturdy than the 2ds xl. Look forward to more videos!

Great review! Like the form factor here. I'm one that hasn't upgraded my RP2 to the RP3+ as of yet. The flip may be the one worth upgrading to.
Nice looking design, the hardware looks solid, I just wish it had a better CPU, T618 just doesn't really cut it anymore.

Bought one of these as soon as I saw it. Impatiently waiting for it to arrive!
I don't mind the lack of a second screen, there seems to be a fair amount of hardware in the base, though I wonder if they couldn't have at least put a trackpad there. The little slider analogs probably wouldn't be as favorable without the Hall sensors so at least that's a reasonable upgrade, but there's still the hope for a little more performance that's holding me back from a purchase. Once again I'll give it 3 months or so to see if they don't turn around and cough up a new models for 200 with a slightly better processor and all the improvements this has.

I already have the RP3+ so I don't have an incentive now to get this, but the active cooling of this one is definitely going to make my long gaming sessions more fun in the long run.
I love clamshell devices! Even though I have an RP2+ I usually have my powkiddy v90 in my pocket just cause its so resilient when im on the go. Just ordered the flip today and excited to be using that as my daily driver soon.

We need more clamshells, so pocketable. Pretty impressed by this unit. If it played PS2 solidly (i.e. met the performance of my phone), I'd throw my money at it.

This design is so cool!
clamshell design is great, but any moving part introduces durability concerns down the road. I would be interested to see how easy it is to repair the hinge. The example that comes to mind is the 3DS - usually wears out significantly over just a few years, and is pretty challenging to replace for the typical user.
Also, Retroid seems to be in a pattern of releasing a miniscule performance upgrade, followed by a big one. Kinda wish they would just hold off until they have a new chipset in their handheld. Active cooling is nice, but I don't think it allows us to do anything that the RP3+ can't already do just as well.
active cooling will keep the device cooler in your hands , so that's another plus .
I never liked clamshell, it feels like an outdated design but it makes sense for a retro design. The only clamshell device I've owned is the Gameboy SP which I didn't like, the GBA was the best design for a handheld imo. Nintendo went back to a great design with the switch lite.

@@hia5235 SP was a pain in the ass to use for those with big hands. Seriously, I'd be cramping after 2 hours, OG GBA was easily the best form factor.
@@hia5235 Not sure what you'd been smoking yesterday but the SP is pants. Horrible uncomfortable form factor. The original GBA is by far the most comfortable retro handheld.

Excited to get mine! Thanks for getting this out quickly. I've been looking for feedback on the sliders and from what I'm seeing they're very similar to the 3DS which means I'll be fine. I'm curious to see which I prefer, this or the 405m.

I wonder about the analog sticks, buttons, and dpad leaving residue and friction rub on the screen when folded (a la OG 3DS). Is the screen recessed in the top lid enough to circumvent this? Better then I thought that it would be but that SOC just looks like a very temporary stopgap, so would expect to see a superseded model with something like an RK3588S soon.
Really want one but I'm going to wait for the plus version that's sure to come soon. I also don't really like the joystick placement, I'd personally prefer them at the top. I do appreciate this video showing it off.
I'm getting the pocket flip over the 3+ because the select and start button are in good spots, the pad placements are more comfortable, and i loved my 3ds so I'll get this just experience that again.
I would love it if they move the analog sticks a little more to the side, add another screen and make a console that can emulate the DS games!

I was intrigued by these when they were announced, I'm still using the Retroid 2. I wouldn't mind upgrading to this design, knowing Retroid they'll have 2 new iterations of the Flip available before the end of the year 😅

I remember getting the Retroid Pocket 2 and absolutely hating the d-pad and the analog sticks. The USB-C port also wouldn't charge from a Turbo charger.

I'm curious as to how well this would be as a portable video game system when plugged into a TV. Of course can play using the screen, but I would like to see it hooked up to a TV and some controllers connected. Not the best to try and lug many of the game consoles around but if I could play this on the go and at home would be cool.

Nearly 2 years later and I STILL LUV my Powkiddy V90. I play it more than my OG RG350.
They COULD have included actual analogue sticks with R3 and L3 had they just done what Anbernic does, have a square cut out in the motherboard and screw holes for the analogue sticks, that is an additional reason I will not be purchasing the Flip. ALL that room and they couldn't include an ABC, XYZ face button configuration (closes eyes, raises chin, folds arms and shakes head back and forth in disappointment)
Great Review! It's a great device, sure, but no hardware upgrades really, I'm looking forward to the RP4+, the + will give a NICE performance boost over the upcoming RP4. =D

When you look at the device... do you see ANY room for even a single extra button... let alone 2 additional buttons? I sure don't! The device is COMPLETELY filled up with stuff and things. I don't even know HOW they managed, outside of witchcraft, to CRAM ALL those buttons, TWO analogue sticks or EVEN a directional pad in such an insignificantly TINY TINY place..... man. =P

cool to finally see a review unit in action! would certainly be cool for almost anything you'd wanna play on it. since there's wii support I wonder how that works, seems like it might be kinda dodgy. wonder how well something like TATSUNOKO X Capcom would play on it?

I kinda wish there was a tiny little screen in that empty space on the bottom half. It could show diagnostics or play music, and would fix a lot of the emulation issues with DS/3DS

Are the buttons (especially de Dpad) mushy or clicky?
Does it have a gyroscope?

For anybody who's struggling with GameCube/PS2 games that run at 60 fps you can get the PAL versions of the games and get alot more leeway to work with at 50 fps. Even if frames do drop, it's not as noticeable as compared with the NTSC versions. You just have to experiment on the settings and which emulators because Dolphin has 4 different versions to work with.
I love clamshell devices so this one might be in my list to replace my RG351V, unless Anbernic reveals a clamshell handheld during this year
I also like the 2DS single piece form. It has potential for lots of io. This form also looks nice.

Have you ever consider trying the LG V50s with the dual screen case? I believe the price in the US should be less than $200 for both.
It's an old LG smartphone with Snapdragon 855 and adreno 640 and it seems like the perfect budget mobile for emulation.
Thanks for your thorough review! Do cloud streaming services like GeForceNow or Xcloud work on this device? I want to get it, but only if this model solved problem from previous models where the second triggers weren’t recognized by those streaming services. I want to stream Riders Republic or Forza Horizon 4/5 on the device. Would I be able to play those games through internet streaming on the RP Flip? Please let me know if you have any advice!

I'm new to the handheld scene, so in this video can you play game out of the box right away using the retroid front end (with the exxception of Drastic) or do we have to go through any other sort of setup like with the rp3+? Thank you
Nice, but I have long fingers and the smaller design hurts my hands/fingers. If they would incorporate the hall effect joysticks, active cooling and the analogs trigger to the Retroid Pocket 3+ it would be the perfect design for me. Of course, they'd have to not carry over the rocker type sticks.
Basically the one form factor where it didn't feel like i needed a screen protector and had no issue just shoving it in my pocket along with the wallet. Might look into it later just not sure what i would want to do with it yet. maybe as a ps1 only system for on the go. 🤔
This device isn't for me, but I'm happy to see manufacturers returning to clamshells.
Maybe in a few years we can have something as powerful as a Steam Deck in this size and form factor.
(edit: I know GPD is coming out with something - but it'll be bigger than this, so not pocketable, likely won't ship with SteamOS and won't have trackpads)
Felt this. I feel as a Deck owner it's closest to the "All in one" system I'm looking for but it just isn't QUITE there yet.
@@toondude78yeah no same. As a Linux device, it isn't great as it's too locked down and hard to make work with normal software. As a Portable Console, it's just about perfect, apart from the battery. Keep it with you in a hotel or on a road trip and you'll be happy. But taking it anywhere like a city for a day or anything it'll be hellish.
That built in mapper, just love those kinds of extra functionalities..... But for a nearsighted person like me, the display at 4.7" seems a bit small for me.....
5:50 is the ideal design for a dual-screen setup. I wish Retroid or someone would work on it. 😅
Was hoping for the Unisoc T760 SOC since I'm looking at the chipset market and it's really cheap in price.
As you may notice that the Retroid Pocket Flip and Retroid Pocket 3+ have the same features as the AYN Odin Pro, and yet I already have a AYN Odin the same amount of Retroid Pocket.
Although Retroid Pocket and AYN have same companies with different stuff and it's fun for me to use! Android Games works fine with AYN Odin and Retroid Pocket. I can't tell why Retroid Pocket is similar to the AYN Odin.
And with the same and different features to AYN Odin.
Retroid Pocket 3+ was officially the clone of the AYN Odin Pro.
And this Retroid Pocket Flip is the almost capable version of a AYN Odin Pro.
I can't see how many times I've been looking for a Retroid Pocket Flip, which is the almost AYN Odin Pro's Alternative Models.
Retroid Pocket is from That AYN Odin model, and I don't think it's weird, because everytime I'm testing AYN Odin Pro, I don't think AYN Odin Pro has a update for Retroid Pocket.
I'm familiar with the stuff I already owned AYN Odin Pro but it's AYN Odin Base Version! I tested out with AYN Odin Base and it was a little deep, I think AYN Odin Pro Version is way better than the Base version and I figured out AYN Odin Pro did the awesome stuff.
According to this AYN Odin Pro Alternate Models, this clamshell AYN Odin model is looking excellent!

I believe when I'm able to look out for AYN Odin Pro being a brother to AYANEO Pocket Air, AYANEO Pocket Air is so similar to Pimax Portal And AYN Odin Pro too. Even Logitech G Cloud.
Although, AYN Odin Pro, Logitech G Cloud, Pimax Portal and Razer Edge can be the popular of Next-Gen Handheld.
While Steam Deck can be SUPER popular. So Steam Deck is actually the perfect handheld like PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X are the perfect home gaming console (Even Xbox Series S)
What kind of Xbox Series S being a perfect home gaming console with digital only console! Even when Xbox Series S is a digital only console, you can't play Xbox Series S with a CD Drive, because it won't work. It's impossible to do so, because when you play a Xbox Game Disc on your Xbox Series S, it won't work. Because Xbox Series S is all digital! You can only play Xbox Series S games with a Digital Version. So, Xbox Series S is the Digital Device Version of Xbox Series X.
Here's my most thoughts about Android Handhelds with GPD XP, AYN Odin Pro, Logitech G Cloud, Razer Edge, Pimax Portal and AYANEO Pocket Air...
AYN Odin Pro was the most powerful handheld... So, AYN Odin Pro has chosen to do its own way of being itself of its own path to the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. And I can't even imagine if AYN Odin Pro's performance looks similar to the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X Performance.
Logitech G Cloud is also the powerful handheld as superior as AYN Odin Pro is, it's very cool how both AYN Odin Pro and Logitech G Cloud can be powerful... But when I find out the difference performance between the AYN Odin Pro and Logitech G Cloud, it makes them more powerful than ever. So, Logitech G Cloud has the lack of performance while AYN Odin Pro has the amazing performance, but Logitech G Cloud is the strongest machine as well as AYN Odin Pro is.

I don't know about Pimax Portal, but Pimax Portal is yet another Next-Gen Android Handheld alongside with AYN Odin Pro and Logitech G Cloud being similar and AYANEO Pocket Air is coming too.
Pimax Portal and AYANEO Pocket Air are both coming, although... Razer Edge is a easy fit.
I have to test out Android Games on AYN Odin, GPD XP and Logitech G Cloud and see that it doesn't really have issues playing it on AYN Odin Pro, GPD XP Plus or even Logitech G Cloud. So I have to remind myself that it won't do any laggy for an Android Handheld with AYN Odin Pro, GPD XP Plus, Logitech G Cloud, Pimax Portal and/or even AYANEO Pocket Air.
Also, I know you told me that I am wrong about everything I said, so... My thoughts aren't true. So, my other thought that I said isn't even true either. So, tell me that I'm wrong.
I just wish they would have gone with the 3ds design with a bottom screen. We already have a few clamshell's from different companies but none of them have really experimented with that design
It looks great, I love the design, but I have a few reasons for not wanting to get this. I have a Retroid Pocket 2+ which plays all that I want to play accurately, since Gamecube/PS2 is a no go. And to get to those, I have a Steam Deck. But I love the look, and if I didn't have the RP 2+ I'd definitely be investing in one of these.
It's amazing how they actually placed the start and select buttons in a not so stupid location! Guess they learned their lesson? 🤔 🤷♂️

Love the detail. I could have just listened to this instead of watching, in a good way. Only suggestion I got is a decibel meter and throw something common beside it, like a steam deck, for comparison

I like the clamshell design but I am worried for its sturdiness. I bought the GPD XD+ and since one hinge broke I don't use it anymore...
Anyway, I love the WipeOut-series and the Tekken-series. So I would be interested to see how WipeOut Fusion and Tekken Tag Tournament works with AetherSX2 on this device.
Since the release of the retorid pocket 2, I have loved your series of consoles, they are my favorites, although I don't have any, they are certainly excellent for emulation.

Clamshell is the best design for smaller handhelds, because it is absolutely pocketable and portable.
I wish it had better hardware though. The T760 would have been much better, or something with a mali G610.
