      For the tin box games you can add Darwinia from Introversion Software.
      They did a limited edition in order to raise money from the fans and to keep the company afloat.

    Many years ago, in late 90's we had our Polish game with really original box. I'm talking about "Rezerwowe Psy" (Reserve Dogs). The game was 18+ becouse of many violence and sexual content, but the box didn't show anything. It was just a wodden box, made from non-grinded, rough planks and old nails, and it has only red stamp on front of it with title of the game. :)

  • @zh84
    @zh84 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    My first experience of this was in 1984, when probably many readers were not born yet. Games for the Sinclair ZX Spectrum were sold on cassette, usually just a standard plastic box with a coloured inlay, occasionally in a bigger rectangular box if the game was something ambitious like "Elite". The game "Tau Ceti" had its plastic cassette inside a larger card box which was hexagonal: not a regular hexagon but a 90-45-45 triangle with a bit cut off each corner. It certainly looked interesting on the shelf, but I never got far with the game itself.

    Man, I miss this era of PC games and gaming in general. There was something neat about actually GOING to your local PC store/boutique and browsing all the games. Then that one clerk "Steve" (it was always some variant of Steven") who's really into his job (and very metal for some reason) would be like "Duuuuuude, you should check this one out, come on!" And you'd go look at this new game box they just got in like it was a Rembrandt. Ahhh nostalgia! :)

    I used to have the box for Even More Incredible Machine by Sierra and it was definitely unusual - IIRC, it was "hinged" with two parts and had a little cat shaped cutout with a tail on the side. The instructions said to pull the cat's tail and that would make the box open.

    The "Eidos box" was one I remember seeing a good bit growing up (usually stuff like FF7, Thief, and I think Tomb Raider games) and thinking they looked pretty cool, even though this was long before I was big into PC gaming. I always found it interesting that PC games back then came in such big boxes, since I was most used to either cartridge games coming in always rectangular shaped boxes or CD console games in jewel cases that were shaped the same as CD cases (the "most usual" you'd see on those games were the multi-disc games that came in larger jewel cases in order to hold about 3 or 4 discs).
    Nowadays all console games, no matter the system, and even PC games just come in DVD or blu-ray styled boxes/cases, which is fine since it makes organization easy, but I admit it's nice to occasionally see a box that even just slightly stands out in some fashion (like Mario Kart 8 and the boxed version of the New Super Luigi U expansion on Wii U are so far the only Wii U games to not come in the usual blue color case [heck I kinda wish Nintendo of America would adopt what their Japanese parent company does with mature rated games by having the boxes colored black, it'd make them stand out more]; and when I bought Final Fantasy XIII-2 on the Xbox 360 [yes I actually like FF13, lets not get into an argument over this... random non-specific person reading this] I got the Special Edition since it comes in this cool almost book-like case).

    • @stigrabbid589
      @stigrabbid589 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Many people look for alternate boxes, so the dvd/bluray style boxes often have alternate art, or if they were from Print Manuals were still included, some had reversable art, with a side A and side B. Also Deluxe/Ultimate editions often either have alternate cover art or a Steelbook case.

  • @hackerx7329

    Two for you to track down. Burn Cycle had a perfectly normal looking box until you touched it. It was thermal reactive.
    I have No Mouth and I Must Scream had a mostly normal rectangular shape but then the front was inlaid with a clear window to show off the included mousepad with the games artwork on it. It is to the best of my remembrance the only game to include a mousepad.

    X-Car! I played it, but I never saw the box (I think even back then it was fairly obscure). I got a lot of enjoyment from the drag racing sims Bethesda made, where you could create your own engine from scratch with anything from a single cylinder to a V12, and all sorts of parameters from bore and stroke to what fuel it ran on would make a difference in the power output. So much fun to tinker around with and create bizarre engines!

    I like the "Towers of Darkness: Heretic Hexen & Beyond" box. It is shaped like a tower (sort of hexagonal) and has reliefs for the little arched windows on the sides, which show screenshots. And a big opening in the middle, shaped like a window, showing D'sparil or one of his disciples looking out.

    Came for Spectre, left satisfied. After working in a software store, these boxes were annoying to put on shelves. Sometimes they didn't fit, but I suspect that was the point. You couldn't put that Spectre box on it's side like a book because it would easily fall on the floor, so you had to place it on the shelf facing outwards.

    I tell you what, with these references to Robot Wars, have you ever checked out Robot Arena 2? It's not perfect, but it's one of the best games that fill the (somewhat) niche genre of sticking katanas onto toasters and making them fight each other.

    I loved the Dune Box with the Boxcover opening as the Sandworm. Still have the Box if you need it :)

    I rolled in here all ready to yell MARATHON and run away, but the boxes you displayed are actually MUCH weirder.
    The Bungie Mac Action Sack still might be a candidate, since it comes in a sack.

    Please do a lets play of the Women are from Mars game. I have (maybe slightly fond) memories of my mom reading that book in her book club. I'm rather curious about it.

    I always loved the old EA "album cover" boxes ... Starflight, The Bard's Tale, Archon, Seven Cites of Gold. The just had a cool look and they always gave props to the devs.

    Love this videos. I still have my copy of Tau Ceti for the ZX Spectrum, I believe it is the first game with an odd box I came across.

    I loved Gabriel Knight! That was the first game that really creeped me out (but I couldn't stop playing). I think my version either came in a collection or it was something my dad brought home from work (there was a lot of "sharing" done at work x_x).

    One that comes to mind is some variants of _Day of the Tentacle_, which apparently came in not only the standard rectangular box, but also boxes shaped like triangular prisms, with a cap on the top for opening.
    I'm not entirely sure why LucasArts decided to market the game in boxes that could pass as giant Toblerones, but here we are.

    I'm surprised you didn't show off the Fallout 3 lunch box, since I've seen that one in the background of your channel before and it definitely qualifies as unusual :)
    I have a retail copy of Fate that has an interesting box too; it was produced so cheaply that, despite being the same size and shape as a CD case, it's a cardboard sleeve with a folded piece of cardboard and a CD sleeve inside, and that's it. I was both intrigued and mildly put out when I discovered this about it. That doesn't really count as a "big box" release, though.
