The Krab is a successful construction. The K9 chassis performs better than the manufacturer predicted. The Ukrainians show that it moves efficiently on soft ground. The Poles produce the barrels themselves, which should normally withstand 1000 shots and the replacement of the gun. Some Krabs have fired thousands of times and continue to shoot.

To be noted, it assembles technologies from various countries, with productions under licence...
The turret is the AS-90 one.
The gun is the Rheinmetall 155mm L/52, manufactured under licence by HSW.
And it uses the Topaz artillery command system (which is Polish).

@@fabr5747 The gun is not from Rheinmetall, it is the gun from the AS-90/52, manufactured in HSW using barrel blanks from a French company Aubert&Duval. And the turret, as well as the gun, is not licensed anymore - Vickers Shipbuilding and Engineering Ltd. (the designer of the AS-90) doesn't exist, all the technical documentation belongs to HSW and they don't have to pay any license fees.

@@fabr5747 The turret is a copy based on AS-90 as British "lost" the blueprints and Polish engineers were forced to do everse-engineering on a British AS-90 to build turrets that are curently in use and they are not 100% identical. The first prototypes that were build on Polish T-72/PT-91 chasis were using British AS90 turrets(and maybe this turrets got also British cannons in them).
2011 version was using French Nexter Systems barrel and in 2016 they switched to German Rheinmetall barrel.

@@Bialy_1 more precisely, the cannons are manufactured by HSW from prefabricated elements imported from France, while the first cannons were French (Nexter) and then German, before the barrel house was built at HSW. An important thing to remember is that even though the turret is theoretically British, after the end of production of the original, just after Poles had bought the licence, Poles had to reinvent a lot of the systems inside, thus calling it the Braveheart turret is entirely wrong. It is genuinely Polish. Regards

What amazes me is that Poles were able to coordinate a project that came from three timezones and four business cultures.
When Poles come to work, Koreans are finishing. Try organizing a Telco in such a situation.
Also, the French cooperated on the project. They are famously difficult.

If they are the best why Poles buy Korean howitzers now?

    • @kalkol21
      @kalkol21 ปีที่แล้ว +25

@@MrQ454 As I wrote in my earlier comment, the Armato-howitzer is a part of DMO Regina.
It doesn't matter what kind of howitzer it is, as long as it is integrated with the rest of the module.
And so AHS Krab has a chassis from K9.
From the so far announced structure of the Land Forces, I know that at least 28 DMOs will be needed, which is a minimum of 672 howitzers in Polish conditions.
      Why is so much needed?
Because previously each brigade had one Regina DMO and at least 2 Regina DMOs are needed for an artillery regiment subordinate to a division. There were Krabs in the artillery regiments and 2S1 Gvozdika in the brigades.
Due to the outbreak of war in Ukraine, a decision was made to transfer part of the Krabs and to withdraw the 2S1 Gvozdika (and all post-Soviet weapons that have survived so far) from the army.
At the time the contract was negotiated, annual production was 48 machines, and now it is reportedly doubled. Nevertheless, the production of 672 howitzers would take 7 years if we produced only for the needs of the Polish Army. So a certain amount of K9 was ordered from Korea.
Currently, Korean military equipment is gaining some popularity in Europe and there is a need to build a service center, factory and spare parts warehouse in such a place that heavy equipment is not transported for a month...
So the answer to your question is Business, Politics and Interoperability...

But since we gave around 60 krabs to Ukraine we needed new howitzers ASAP and K9 were the only option that can be supplied "from the shelf" with many similarities to Krabs. + Since we need A LOT of howitzers the plan is to order both Krabs and work with Koreans to develop K9PL and supply our army from both sources as HSW even with the investments cannot supply hundreds of howitzers in such a short time.

Since the important turret system is that of the British AS90, it seems that Poland, which combines the hull and turret, is smart. So it's probably made in Poland rather than Korea. The body side engine and transmission are also made in Germany. By the way, Koreans seem to be happy that the K9 was adopted, but it is already a self-propelled gun different from the K9.

@@PanProper from what I remember it wasn't. It was modified - poles increased it's durability. Here comes kudos to the brits as they made a really good piece of equipment where poles improved on. The story of this deal is crazy as well. TBH - at some point when the KRAB project has been delayed and stopped/changed multiple times people forgot about this. Brits sold all technology quite cheaply as they lost faith that this project will be successful. BTW: there was a tipping point when poles tested PZH2000 - they decided that it is too expensive, but there was no viable alternative - so they choosed the british cannon as potential option they can improve on. If not Germany who pushed high on price and being too confident that their system is superior - Krab probably won't exist and Poland would end up with small number of PZH2000

Only chassis is developed and made by Koreans (Hyundai Rothem) and with HSW cooperation reconstructed! It is entirely new costruction! For sure all of Krab (in duty in Ukraine) itself, is made and manufactured in Poland. All of them was sent out off polish regular tactical units. Don't forget about the fire control system named TOPAZ, which is polish developed system. It is a heart of Krab which is fully developed in Poland! Well not really. Turret system is AS-90 braveheart which never actually went into full production in UK, it was proposed for AS-90 upgrade. Only manufacturing line exists in Poland for this turret.
As for Nexter's participation - they supply some of 155/52 barrels, some of barrels are made in Poland to similar specs. These orders in Nexter are irregular.
Because one fun bit - it's not that simple to make 155/52 barrel. You need seasoned barrel blanks of sufficient size. These blanks need to "rest" for couple years before you make barrel out of them. So it's not something you can quickly scale up and limits the numbers you can make. As major player in this industry Nexter has a lot of seasoned blanks which it turn into barrels - but will sell barrels to customers not blanks. So while HSW needed to wait for blanks to delivered and seasoned, French can just make the barrels on spot. As inventory of barrel blanks in Poland "matures" this will be required less and less.
Calling it French... is a bit of overstatement.

All I know is that the UAF relies on it ALWAYS and despite they are not that many of them (yet at least!) - and despite some losses - they've been always sent to the HOTTEST & MOST DANGEROUS FRONTLINE-SECTIONS - for example - they've been engaging the russian forces in & around Bakhmut, since the "get-go" of the battle for it & the beginning of the russki offensive onto that town, making MINCEMEAT out of "Wagner" troopers. As far as I know they are still there - BASHING one russian position after the other, excellent both in "supression" missions, as well as "battery & counter-battery" fire. Easy to use - precise - durable - VERY fast to deploy & redeploy, so perfect for "shoot&scoot" missions, it gained among Ukrainian soldiers a heavy reputation for RELIABILTY & FIRE-EFFECTIVENESS. The "TOPAZ" system is a "little marvel" of Polish targeting&battle managment software and the "Krab" now - furthermore! - has been successfully proven to be able to shoot ALL the array of NATO ammunitions, so not just "base-bleed" projectiles, but "Excalibur" or equivalent, too, as well as all others. MOST IMPORTANTLY ! - When CALLED UPON - they ALWAYS DELIVER - EVEN in the WORST CONDITIONS (weather&terrain conditions or "under heavy enemy fire" conditions REGARDLESS! - even there, where some heavier - i.e. German in this case - equipment simply could not go ...or so I've been told at least). The AHS "Krab" has nothing to "envy" towards its Western counterparts ...and that makes me truly proud... Sława Ukrainie! Za Waszą i Naszą Wolność!

No, it's not for free. Poland received payment for a significant amount of equipment donated to Ukraine. Not from Ukraine but from EU. Poland is the largest beneficiary of the EU fund created to finance weapon donations to Ukraine. Additionally, the only purchase of weapons Ukraine made abroad, using their own funds, was around 50 pieces of Krab, which are currently being delivered.
The former Polish government (PiS) didn't inform the general public in Poland about it because they were in constant clashes with the EU, and their propaganda consistently portrayed the EU as a threat. They didn't want to admit that this 'threat' paid them over 1 billion Euros for old Polish tanks and Soviet-era SPGs.
