It’d be cool to see a video on comparing track side vs factory engineering. Pros vs cons of each, work life balance of each, etc.

@@imszervi-o-8499 I don't know how much the new price cap affects it, but I had multiple teammates from my FSAE team go into F1 and I can tell you by in large the work life balance is terrible. I'm not trying to be a Debbie downer, but you have to really, really love F1 to tolerate it and even then most people can only deal with it for short periods of time. It's by far the biggest negative IMO.
If you're in college I HIGHLY recommend you join your FSAE team. If you take it seriously it will give you a decent sense of what working in F1 is like which is just ridiculous hours constantly. I also personally learned that as much as I absolutely love cars, when it became a "job" of sorts for me the enjoyment decreased over time. In retrospect I loved every minute of my FSAE experience, but I'll be honest there were times when I was beyond stressed out, sleep deprived, and my GF was pissed at me for "spending more time with the car than her" and I just wanted to quit, but I didn't because I didn't want to be the guy who let everyone down and I knew how overloaded everyone else was. I don't know first hand how F1 teams run, but I'd imagine the comradery is similar to some extent, especially mid-season.
So if you can, I can't stress enough how valuable/important that whole experience was and I know with 100% certainty it's almost a soft requirement of sorts to work in F1. You don't have to have it, but it really, really helps. Especially if you do well in competition and design review.
Edit: I should have watched the whole video first :-0. I agree with more or less everything Blake said.

Thanks for the nice video❤ I’m crazy about motor sports and I chose to go to Britain for college instead of staying in China totally out of the love for racing. Since I’m still a high school student now and is going to apply for college, I wanna ask about whether the teams care a lot about what university I am from? Well to be honest I am not good enough to enter Cambridge or else, but I am pretty sure I can make it to UCL, Bristol uni or Manchester, though these universities aren’t that competitive. By the way, does the majors matter? I would like to apply for both ME and EEE, while I am not sure whether EEE could closely related to motor sports.

I’m from the UK, doing my undergrad in the US right now. I’ve spent my first year as a Bio major, but have gotten really into math since being in college and I started watching formula 1 this year and realized how strategic and analytical it is, which I’ve come to realize are the things that make my brain buzz (in the best way if you know what I mean). When it comes to any job, I get nervous. I don't know whether I'm going to be good at it or not. Say I'm interested in the aerodynamics department, would they teach me how to work my way around an F1 car? Would I just be thrown in there without any training? WILL there be training? How do I get myself setup? Obviously I'd have to go to college for very obvious reasons, but I'm just so lost, and I really want to work in F1. I don't want to spend so much time doing something that I think I'm going to like, and then ending up not liking it. I want to mostly work as a pit stop crew member, but if I'm not able to go there, I don't know what to do for a job in F1 or a career in general. Do I just go to the UK and start asking McLaren employees how the hell I get started? I just don't know what to do.

This is an awesome video. I'm starting my 2nd year in Mech E; FSAE allowed me to find how passionate I am about suspension and vehicle dynamics. It's changed how I view my coursework into how I can apply those concepts to my own design process of the car. I'd love to learn about engineers that started in U.S. motorsport (Imsa, Indy, Nascar) and transitioned into the top series such as F1 or WEC. Hearing your route to F1 showed that there is opportunity for U.S. engineering students to make it to F1.

DUUUUUUUUUUUDE!!!!!! I don't know how to phrase this but every word that came out of your mouth I felt like I resonated with. I've been trying my hardest and feel major imposter syndrome but I am not sure why. What even is my next step and how I guarantee my spot at a chance. For some more background, I am currently an ME undergrad and personally, with the most respect, I'd love to request a chat so you can answer some questions most undergrads I think would have. At least those that are interested in F1. This video opened my eyes and gave me hope but even you said it yourself, you can only fit so much into 20 minutes' worth of content. Id also likes to ask you some specific questions about R&D and talk about what it is like to work with an engine and what that entails. I don't do youtube but I promise you I'm a pretty interesting guy lol. Regardless, thank you for the video, and keep doing what you're doing, thanks!

A lot of engineers are either originally from UK or at least graduated schools in UK even if they aren't UK citizens. Most of the teams are located in England(esp near Oxford) but of course there are some exceptional cases too. Trackside performance engineer jobs would be the best if you want to be a race engineer or "the one who directly talks to the driver" - so you'd better go for either MechE or Aerospace, i reckon.

My dad is a mechanic and I’ve helped him out a few times but he gets worrisome since he doesn’t want me getting hurt but I’ve always been interested in cars and I recently found out about F1 (due to Gran Turismo movie lol) but I love it and I would love to have a future career of this or related to this. I’m pretty sure there’s a masters engineering programme in FEA simulations. You could get a job doing these simulations and verify yours results. You get paid a lot of money for it even if the simulation/report is wrong. In most industries the results are more wrong than right but as long as you can verify it you’ll be fine.

She kept showing me stuff that wasn't her assigned project, Turns out, she was a lot smarter than me and more times than not - eventually we'd end up using what she'd learned on some other application. When she left, her replacement wasn't curious - mostly worthless. I had to carry most of the water until I retired.
