    Beautiful..want to try PastelMat but kind of expensive and inaccessible. Have tried Uart which I really like but again its a little on the pricey side plus not super easy to get (besides ordering) Would be nice if there was a medium priced pastel surface that was widely available

    I always thought that when you blend in the pastel like that, you fill up the tooth quicker and can't layer on top. Sounds like just the opposite?

    • @stella.r2708
      @stella.r2708 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Depends how thick you lay down each layer and the pressure you put on the pastel.

    This is a very helpful tutorial, dog noses are really tricky and were always my biggest fear when doing pet portraits lol!
    RE when you bring up coloured pencils at 20:26, you don't need to leave gaps for that aren't pure white (like the ones you're applying at 20:26), I rarely ever do this actually. In most cases I use a more opaque and waxy coloured pencil brand such as caran d'ache luminance to get those highlights in over the top of my underpainting. No need to tiptoe around the areas you want to add highlights to ;)

      thanks for the tip - i personally find that doesnt work that great for me.

    • @WildPortraitArtist
      @WildPortraitArtist 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It may just be that you overworked the paper before getting to that stage, if you have too much coloured pencil on your paper during the underpainting stage, it's very difficult getting much detail over the top at all. And it's next to impossible if you're not using a blending medium like OMS. Coloured pencils are a tricky medium to get to grips with. Not sure if you've tried OMS in your past tests with coloured pencils but it makes the layering process so much easier and you can get many more layers in before running out of tooth. I would argue that using a blending medium is essential when attempting to layer from dark to light. And just like with pastel pencils, if you are using the wrong papers, you won't be able to get good results when layering from dark to light.
      I totally understand why you prefer pastel pencils over coloured pencils. They are much easier to get on with and are not nearly as slow, but ultimately the techniques I use with coloured pencils are mostly exactly the same as when I'm using pastel pencils or acrylics.
      Everyone has that one medium that they just don't get on with (for me it's gouache... I hate gouache so much! 😂). I don't mean to be contentious but the point that I'm trying to make here is that I don't think it's super great constantly dissuading your viewers so much in your tutorials by putting coloured pencils down like that, and giving misinformation on techniques because you don't get on with them personally.
      There are multiple ways of using the same techniques, and getting the same results with coloured pencils as there are with pastel pencils. You just have to have the right materials to achieve the same techniques. Knowledge and understanding of the medium you're discussing is important, especially when teaching others, as I'm sure you are aware. I hope I'm not coming across as rude or confrontational while saying this, that's not what I'm trying to do. I love coloured pencils a lot, and I really respect and look up to you as an artist and a teacher, so I can't help myself 🙈
