    I’m old enough to remember DVD-Rom features on DVDs which was basically a way for one to access more bonus content than what was on the DVD (usually it wasn’t much, and all you did was just access the movie or movie studio website to either play a game or watch a video or browse a gallery. Sometimes you could access stuff like PDFs or even get screensavers, but I’m not entirely sure about the last stuff).

      The older Harry Potter releases had some sort of PC interaction. Never could get it to work, even on Windows 7...

    The 2011 Star Wars Blu Ray set is one of the best blu ray sets, with over 40 hours of bonus features. And the Alien Anthology, with it's interactive MU-TH-ER mode.

    There were special features on VHS tapes sometimes. Even as early as the 80's. Really hope you do a video on that subject since it's very interesting (to me at least).

    • @PlatinumYoshi
      @PlatinumYoshi  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

      I actually never knew about that, mostly cause I never grew up with VHS. That idea does sound very interesting so I'll do it whenever I can get my hands on some of those tapes lol

      @@PlatinumYoshi If you want some examples of 80's VHS tapes with special features, the original 1984 VHS of Mickey's Christmas Carol, The original 1983 VHS of Benji's Very Own Christmas Story, and the original 1984 VHS of Benji Takes A Dive At Marineland.
      VHS tapes with special features were much more common in the 90s and 2000s.

    even the ps vita had a second screen feature. when connected to a ps4 , select games would display information on the ps vitas screen or a mobile phone / tablet . games like fallout 4, Destiny 1 , AC4 Black Flag , PVZ Garden Warfare can utilize this feature to name a few. the feature still works aswell and the app is also still listed on the app store(not sure about google play though) so yea pretty cool

  • @GingerBradMan21
    @GingerBradMan21 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +39

    I feel like the second screen app stuff would actually work better today with streaming services and the fact that so many people watch movies while looking at their phone for half of it anyways.

    I know there were some pop-up features on the DVDs of Evangelion: Death and Rebirth and The End of Evangelion.
    That DVD had some lore dumps (that are sometimes inaccurate due to poor translations) pop up, and the film will prompt you to pause so you can read some lore popups.
    Blu-ray can do this with second screen so you have links to look up the lore on your tablet without pausing the film.
    But again, it’s already better to look up the lore on an official proper khara-approved book or a fan wiki (which is actually more accurate than the Manga DVDs) on your tablet while watching the film.
    Most of the Ghibli films also have storyboard features on the second screen on Blu-ray. And they have the option of putting the final film on a corner of the screen, obstructing the storyboards. It would be cool if you can have the final film on the tablet and the storyboards on the TV, or vice versa, however you want.

    6:32 Also funny, since Sony had made a financial loss from Blu Ray yet still couldn't let it go. The competing HD DVD by Toshiba that lost the HD format war actually didn't cause much issue for Toshiba once they lost.

    There are still BD-Live discs being made.
    Mostly music albums on Blu-ray, especially ones from Square Enix like the Final Fantasy soundtracks.
    They allow you to sync up your Blu-ray player with a PC to download an MP3 copy of the album. One of these albums (I think it was Before Meteor: Final Fantasy XIV) had a hidden bonus track through BD-Live.

    Basically, if you buy a physical product-a Blu-ray, a dehumidifier, a chess board, whatever-that requires an internet connection and a smartphone app to fully function and for you to access all the features, expect it to stop working in 5 years. If you're lucky. The only exception might be smart home stuff that uses well-established protocols.

    2:57 i've used a couple of these before: (1) the companion app for the 2012 kids' choice awards and (2) the companion app for "ruff-ruff, tweet, and dave" on sprout (now universal kids).
    the former was just a feed, but i guess it led to the interactive elements added to the nick website and app in 2013.
    the latter had you play along with the show, and i remember your device's microphone had to pick up audio of the show from your TV (because preschoolers totally wanted to cheese it lmao)

      @awii.neocities 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@PlatinumYoshieh, I think it really was because of the second screen
      Nintendo literally never found a point to the thing, which meant that most games didn't really improve using it. plus it meant that the actual console hardware was lacklustre due to Nintendo trying to make it as cheap as possible, and that led to most third party developers not wanting to waste their time on the Wii U. most issues of the Wii U stem from the second screen.
