I legit had the same idea. You know there’s a software called DVDstyler that lets you do that for free? It’s completely open software and you can add video menus.
The first Snow White DVD will forever be my favorite. The magic mirror was your guide. He told you what everything was, he would call out for you if you went idle, every menu was hand crafted specifically for this DVD, and it also had a disc 2 that added to the experience. It was a really high quality menu for what it was!
One other factor is probably the multiple formats they have to do nowadays. Back then, they only had to create one master, the DVD one. Now, they have DVDs, Blu-rays, 4K Blu-rays and even 3D Blu-rays (which Warner Bros. still releases). DVDs and Blu-rays menus are always different because one is dynamic and coded in Java and the other one is static and requires multiple pages. 4K Blu-rays and 3D Blu-rays don't have the same special features (most times they don't have any) which means they also have to redo at least a little bit of coding on those menus, making them a little bit different. Plus, Warner Brothers actually uses HDR on their menus, which means there's a little tweaking needed there also. What I mean by all that is that their consumer base is not only smaller, they're divided between multiple formats for which they have to create different menus (mainly DVDs and Blu-rays, though, as the other ones are slight tweaks of the Blu-ray). They have to do at least twice the work for like half the sales, and it's just not worth it. That's why WB has that weird template (though their template could have been a whole lot better. Universal also has a very obvious and repetitive template, but they mostly use it with clip shows running in the background so it still feels a little more alive), that and the fact that if people are willing to pay for digital copies of the films with no fluff (no cover art, no disc art, almost no special features and no menus), they won't mind the menus so much. It's sad, but people don't care and will buy those films anyway.
The good thing about the DVD menus is that they're in 16:9 widescreen, the bad thing about the DVD menus is that the main menu is static as seen on the current Warner Bros. DVD & Blu-ray releases. I wish the Warner Bros. DVD & Blu-ray menus should be animated again next year, except the sub menus.
I remember getting lost in these menus as a kid, like the Finding Nemo DVD, and discovering fun stuff like bonus features and hidden titles that you can find by skipping through every scene in the disc itself. Not movie scenes, *disc scenes.*
Two things I definitely miss about DVDs 1) Fun games you can play on DVD like Timon and Pumbaa’s Virtual Safari 2) Surprisingly, the part where the THX logo appears right before the movie (or in some cases, before the menu themselves!) As much as I hated the THX logo as a kid, it still contains as much nostalgia as going through Timon and Pumbaa’s Virtual Safari.
Well the spongebob lost in time dvd has a good game and has a clipshow menu w/ a sitll background with spongebob and patrick moving over the still background
This is a topic that feels ripe for a Scott the Woz episode... And yet, it's on this channel! I love it.😊😊 One thing I should mention is that I have a special edition dvd of a Japanese movie starring Ryoko Hirosue that involves time traveling via a washing machine. The DVD's menu is that of the controls of the washing machine! Pretty cool, huh?
My theory for why DVDs were better back then is that they had to convince people to buy them rather than VHS, but now DVDs basically have nothing on them. A rare exception to this is some of the new DreamWorks movies that have the same extras on the Blu-Ray. I think DreamWorks put way to much effort into their early DVD menus.
This is quite unfortunate, I for one, am still purchasing 4k DVDs to watch my favorite movies with. Most have the generic clipshow menu though. Alas, I will never forget DVD menus such as those of Shrek 2 and Over the Hedge. Excellent video, btw.
Warner Bros. made one good dvd menu. The signature edition for The Iron Giant, it’s not incredible per say, but it’s actually animated (shooting stars, swaying trees, the iron giant blinking), it’s like modern Disney DVD Menus where it’s just a background that animates
the quality of the video was really good. I enjoyed hearing what you had to say about the DVD menus and I thought your ideas on how to improve them were quite interesting. my only complaint about the video is how you did the scene selection for each part of the video. while I can tell there was a lot of effort put into that, and it really shows, I think it would've been better if it was a one time thing. that way it didn't take up too much time in the video. but overall, I really enjoyed this! can't wait for the next video.
Man that madagascar 1 menu brings back so many memories, i watched that movie NON STOP and always loved it, and hearing the voice clips from it in the actual movie. I dont remember it much, though
Haven't seen someone cover DVD menus this in depth and you did iy really well. The humor and editing is great, especially with the extra effort you went through to make the menu. Definitely earned yourself a sub betwern this and the FastPlay video!
I have a Jurassic park dvd where the menu is the t rexs footprint and you could see the water in the footprint making ripples as the dinosaur walks, but once you press play you go to the dinosaur roaring
I loved staring at the Iron Man 2008 DVD menu all day, I also love all the Spider-Man trilogy menus, Cars, and the SponegeBob SquarePants Movie ‘04 menus, as well as the Avengers in 2012. Comparing the awesome Avengers 2012 menu to the Endgame menu is pretty sad lol
I'd love to see you make a video on bonus features from early-mid-2000s DVDs. A lot of them were unique, elaborate, or surreal, and it would be fun to see some highlights.
I think one of the reasons the menu’s became more basic is that menu’s annoy some users of DVD’s. My dad in particlair doesn’t appreciate them, he just wants the movie to start playing right away. I like nicely designed menu’s but also feel that the design shouldn’t get in the way of the function. The creative menu’s lend them selves well to movies for kids, but maybe not so much older viewers who just want to have the movie play with as a little fuss as possible. When I was younger I appreciated them more then as an adult. Nowerdays I prefer the blue ray style overlay menu’s that are just a basic menu at the bottom of the screen that you can activate whilst the movie is playing. It is functional and unobtrusive (but not very creative).
Honestly sometimes the still frame menus can be funny when the main characters are just staring into your souls like the isle of dogs menu or the Mr Fox menu
I can see what you mean. The DVD menus used to be so brilliant, back when DVDs were popular. But now that Blu-rays and streaming have become a thing, the DVD menus have become...pretty dull, for some DVDs. But I still treasure DVDs, for being an improvement over VHSes, also having brilliant menus back in the day. And over in the UK, they have the audio in a high tone, some of them. By the way, while this is not related to DVDs, I respect your opinion on Cars 2. I personally love that movie, despite the different theme it has to the first Cars.
I've always hated that ding on the language select screen. It always comes a second after the options appear, like it was put in the wrong spot and always feels like it says "Pay attention you stupid f***" And why is it there anyway? I set the player's language when l set it up. It doesn't need to ask again.
Good content! I especially liked the mini games on the DVDs. I remember I could play with them hours. Also it would be cool if Netflix, Disnex+ or other streaming services made their own menus for each movie and series. How cool would that be?
The mini games bring me back so many memories back when I didn't have video games lol. And yeah, it would be really cool if streaming services had their own menus, especially if they get very creative with it.
PlatinumYoshi If you thought those stillframe dvd menus were bad you need to see Animaniacs Volumes 1-4 and Wakko’s Wish DVD menus. Volume 4 and Wakko’s Wish. THEY WERE BLAND AS HECK. Especially the movie one. No special features or scene selection. Laughable. Warner Bros better step it up with these plain asf dvd menus.
@@karastears I haven't seen any other Animaniacs menus besides Volumes 1 and 2 which aren't too bad but good GOD, Wakko's Wish's menu is terrible. The fact that "Play" and "Languages" are the only options just shows how lazy Warner Bros are with their DVDs
I had a DVD for the fimbles as a kid. It has really cool menu options because there are pictures of characters and you can press on them and it will take you to other menus showing you episodes that the character you pressed on stared in. It was so cool, like you could find and watch the episodes that had your favourite character as the main character.
Honestly, Warner Home Video dvds from the 90s/ early 2000s were fairly good. They didn't really rely on moving clips and scenes from the movie, rather than the movie's poster. They did compensate for this with amazing special features, like Production Notes and trailers. I forgive them for those. But yes, you're right, the newer menus by Warner Bros movies are abhorrent and empty, to say the least.
I loved it when dvds would put episodes for other shows on there I reemeber a old spongebob dvd that had a true Jackson vp episode on there which is strange as those shows have nothing in common despite both being owned by Viacom and being shows that aired on nick in the 2000s
I know right? Fantasia 2000 had an awesome and creative dvd menu with panels of footage from the film flying around in space, then the Lego movie 2's menu had a still image with music, the exact same layout on the rest of the sections, and looked like they only had 5 minutes to make it. Company's have just put less and less effort into dvd menus, why can't they go back to the animated ones which are way better and make the dvd menu more engaging.
Wjat about when Universal used the still image menues where the options were just icons, atleast warner bris had words with the icons. Tremors 5 is like this.
Universal's recent menus are as bad as Warner Bros. It's literally just an image (usually the DVD's front artwork) and a square. Oh, how far we've fallen.
In my opinion, I think Universal's stock DVD menus are worse than Warner Bros.'s stock DVD menus. Because with Warner Bros., they at least put the text "play movie", "scene selection", "set up" etc. on the menu options. With Universal's stock DVD menus, they're just icons, and you have to guess which icon does what if you're not familiar with them. These menus are just the 16:9 versions of the movie posters and the options are just icons, and text is nowhere to be seen. Not even the logo of the movie most of the times. The lack of text on the Universal DVD menus makes them feel empty and eerie, so that they're a perfect example of liminal space.
6:05 Another example of a Still frame Menu is The Spongebob Squarepants Movie : Sponge on the Run where the movie's poster is the picture for the menu and there is no music for the menu
I think the worst dvd menu I saw was for Elvis, I mean it’s a biopic about Elvis fucking Presley and they only grabbed a still image of a scene from the movie with royalty free clapping and screaming sound effect, they didn’t even put an Elvis song for the menu
If you ever make a part 2 to this video you need to look at the dvd menus for series 1 to 4 of Doctor Who. They some of the best I have scene and I recommend watching them.
Fully animated DVD menus along with Video Game fully animated main menus use to scare me a child focusing on DVD menus though the way they would loop made me uncomfortable I felt like if I waited too long something would pop out at me but I still have fond memories of them nonetheless specifically Madagascar, Over The Hedge, Cars, Finding Nemo, Happy Feet, Ice Age 1 and 2 and Shrek The 3rd.
All the dvds I owned mentioned in this video. Shrek 2 Finding nemo Shrek Shrek 3 Chicken run Madagascar Christmas How to train your dragon 3 Toy Story Coco Ice age 2 Kung fu panda Madagascar 2 Bee movie Kung fu panda 2 Spirit Cars 2 Over the hedge Toy Story 2 Madagascar How to train your dragon Trolls Madagascar 3 Rise of the guardians Frozen Shrek 4 Kung fu panda 3 The croods The Lego movie The Lego movie 2 Spider verse Toy Story 4 Ice age SpongeBob movie 2 Tangled The incredibles Turbo Finding nemo 2
Paramount isn’t safe. Disney/FOX isn’t safe. DreamWorks isn’t *EVEN* safe neither, Universal is just dead in their graves, Sony is just crying in a room. While the worst of them all is so bad that they used the most basic font. Why don’t Warner Bros. just use a creative font. Instead of Arial Bold. Why don’t WB use a psychedelic background jeez. Or use the THX logo music so you can scare the children.
My favorite DVD menu of all time is the one for my copy of Spaceballs, mainly because of dark helmet saying “there is only one man who would dare give me the cheeseburger! Lonestar!” But the whole thing is great and feels like you’re inside of Spaceball 1 The worst one i have is the menu for all 4 Batman 1966 DVDs, just a basic ass stock menu with a loop of the theme song playing
7:58 Or, if it's another clipshow menu, it would start with Thanos with the Gauntlet and the stones, and the stones show the previous movies. PS: That's just my opinion/suggestion.
I Hope The DVD's Won't End. Because if it is i'm Gonna Be Sad Edit: I'm really fine with these DVD & Blu-Ray Still Frame & Clipshows. They are okay. But I like the animated ones
I remember I used to have a Toy Story 2 dvd. And it was a still frame menu showing woody and buzz. It had no music nor movement. And it used to terrify my 5 year old self because I swear to god I saw woody and buzz blink.
the video being formatted like a dvd is genius
Yeah but no one keeps going to the scene selection menu. The play the damn movie!

Finding nemo 2
Some of these dvd menus scared the crap out of me, because i saw the dark, and just the feeling.
Finally good content
How about the DVD menu for "The Blair Witch Project?" That one is pretty good too! I'm just saying! LOL
Lonestar!” But the whole thing is great and feels like you’re inside of Spaceball 1
The worst one i have is the menu for all 4 Batman 1966 DVDs, just a basic ass stock menu with a loop of the theme song playing
Does anyone else want to know what’s on the Bonus Features for this video 😂
7:58 Or, if it's another clipshow menu, it would start with Thanos with the Gauntlet and the stones, and the stones show the previous movies. PS: That's just my opinion/suggestion.
That's actually a pretty good idea for a clipshow menu idea
When you pick play, Thanos snaps his fingers.
I really liked the Monster House Menu
I Hope The DVD's Won't End. Because if it is i'm Gonna Be Sad
Edit: I'm really fine with these DVD & Blu-Ray Still Frame & Clipshows. They are okay. But I like the animated ones
Pretty epic!
I wanna see what the bonus features are
Although the DVD menu of "Here Comes The Boom" is just a jump cut clipshow, i find some charm on it (maybe because of the background music)
Evil dead 2 has a cool menu with the hand in a mouse hole
I remember I used to have a Toy Story 2 dvd. And it was a still frame menu showing woody and buzz. It had no music nor movement. And it used to terrify my 5 year old self because I swear to god I saw woody and buzz blink.
But wait what about DVDs that just act like VHS
(AKA wants that play trailers and then the movie or string of episodes and then a menu)
How would someone improve a The Smurfs (2011) DVD Menu?
