    I've heard the opinions of a number of Aussies and many of them believe that rugby union in Australia is now a sport played by the affluent private schools and unless it's made mainstream and easily accessible to every Australian kid regardless of their social status then it's gonna be very difficult to get back to the glory days. I believe Aussie rules, league and even soccer are now way more popular than rugby union in Australia. Even women's netball has a huge following there. Sad considering that Australia is one of the traditional powerhouses of the game. Afterall, they have won 2 world cups.

    • @GRB-tj6uj
      @GRB-tj6uj ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Australia still has (at least) twice the amount of players and clubs as Wales. Even if Union is lagging behind in popularity relative to other codes within Australia, it still is one of the bigger and more affluent unions compared to other rugby union playing nations. And the Wallabies still fill stadiums with young and engaged fans. They have all the resources to win the world cup, it's a matter of managing them right

    • @petergrifin1958
      @petergrifin1958 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I hate to say it but Rugby League is a better game. I prefer union because it means more to me especially on the international stage but boy they could learn a thing or two from union. The Ball was in play for 27 min in Ireland vs SA, its in play DOUBLE that time in an average NRL game. It is why union gets so much hate here because of the comparisons between Union and League made all the time since Union is so slow compared. There's a reason there have been all these new law changes to speed up the game in the past 3 years - they have all originated in Australia and NZ because of the NRL.
      I have no doubt if the wallabies start winning again support will come but it's tough to see them ever getting back to a consistently top 3 rugby nation.

      @petergrifin1958 Agree. I'm a casual RU viewer (mainly follow football, Liverpool FC) and I think because I dip in and out of it I notice the changes more. RU is a completely different sport to the much more open running game I first saw. As you said, slow, attritional, huge players, constant stoppages. I think Aussies have the lowest tolerance for this type of play among RU nations due to having a contrast with RL (no other RU nation has this contrast, as altho RL is also played in England it's not high profile nor does it have the quality of the NRL). I watched that NRL final and thought "any Aussie kid watching this ain't gonna tune in to RU"...the back play in RL is constant (RU has barely any now), and so stars are created (Cleary), in contrast to RU which has no stars as players cannot shine like they used to. Im Irish, and that Ireland vs South Africa game was a dreadful 80 minute arm wrestle (most games now tend to be). Unless they do something about the gameplay of RU it is finished in Australia and is in big trouble elsewhere (four English club teams have folded)..

    As a New Zealand supporter I miss the old rivalry when Australia use to be a powerhouse. A competitive Australia side will also improve NZ rugby. Lopsided scores will leave NZ undercooked against tougher South African and northern hemisphere teams. NZ is also in danger of going the same direction as Australia if we can't encourage more kids to play rugby. There was a time when NZ use to win the U20's world cup every year but haven't won it for nearly a decade. More kids are choosing basketball and rugby league and crowds at games continue to decline. I remember even ten years ago when NZ dominated we were warned it won't last forever.

      When Fiji have a bad game, they tend to have a very bad game. They have the habit to turn into a parody of themselves in those situations. So that game isn't necesarily a good indicator for the quarter final. If they fix their line-out (or at least not throw it to the damn back) they have a good platform against any team: scrum, discipline, breakdown and kicking.

    The worse thing was he ruined everything that Dave Rennie did instead making small changes. For one for me he had no idea about Super Rugby that well when he took over. He left alot of talent out he did even take 3 best jumpers Australia have got none of them. He took 4 long term injured player to the world cup who played 1 to 2 games all year were not inform and not fit enough to play and he took 2 players who did not earn his spot in the Australian side. He bought in a 18 year old who should been part of the under 21 side at the moment. At no time does he give any chance of sponsorship or bringing Australian rugby fans back to the game. The worse thing will be he only thinks one way and I don't think he can change. Difference with Dave and Eddie is the fact that Dave can adapt Eddie can't.

    Eddie has been the worst thing to happen to Australian rugby since like I can't even remember. The board gave him free rein, hoping he'd wind back the clock, but all he's done is drop the clock and break the spring. Enthusiasm for rugby in Australia is officially dead. Eddie should never have been hired in the first place, but he's shat the bed bigtime, and Hamish gave him the laxatives.
    As soon as I saw the nutjob squad he picked, this was always gonna happen. We've only got one good SR team over here, and for reasons known only to himself, Eddie systematically ignored it.
    If this isn't rock bottom for Australian rugby, I'm scared to find out what is.
    This senile grifter needs to disappear yesterday, and so does his corporate enabler. The damage they've both done is incalculable. We might as well gift the Bledisloe to NZ for the next hundred years.

He has been around long enough to be given the chance to blood a bunch of young future talent to get Aussie rugby back to being a force to be reckoned with. Give the man the space you would appreciate to have when you have rebuild from such a back slide as Australian rugby have suffered. Hey Guys - the EJ/RA plan to roll over at this 2023 RWC in order to rebuild for 2027 was NEVER acceptable. It was unacceptable to WB rugby fans and unacceptable for a struggling code in Australia. And..... when Eddie arrived he said the plan was to "Smash and Grab" this 2023 RWC. Then after 4 straight losses that was suddenly dropped for "re-building with youth for 2027".
    So he picked 10 players who, on form, did not deserve selection. Many of them are NOT young either. Younger better players were in fact left in australia. And most of the young players he did select have little/no future potential. Others were older proven Test duds. Add on EJ didn't select a single Test standard goal kicker for this RWC and only 2 fit props who are good at scrum time. WBs got exactly what they deserved imo

    Oz Ceo and team that fired Reenie and hired Eddie should have waited for the World cup and then made the decision, If Oz did perform. I believe they would have still would be in quarters if they kept Reenie. Eddie is good but not as good as Smith with the black ferns world champs, both had 12months to make changes and little chance of getting the cups. I am with Horan, SBW, JK we need to help our ANZAC brothers....

Also, we would not have won the cup with the experienced players that were not picked anyway. Maybe we get further than the pool, but semis at absolute best. Fiji's are not contenders, yet.

    Its not "where does Australian rugby go from here?", it's where does RUGBY go from here?.
    Why are there no stars in rugby? Because the gameplay is dull, attritional, forward dominated, brutish (players are now huge), very little open attacking play so nobody stands out anymore. It needs to change (speed it up, fewer subs (trimmer players) etc.

    Eddie is not the problem. RA made the mistake of kicking Rennie out. Eddie is Eddie. In fact, Eddie is wiser than he was when leading England to a World Cup Final. Its interesting that the people criticizing Eddie hasn't even coached an Under-10 rugby team.
    Even I as a SAFRICAN, understands what Eddie is trying to achieve. He has a certain caliber player in mind. If you don't fit, then he won't select you. He made a mistake by thinking he could still be successful without his experience players. Give him another year...

      England doesn't have the cattle to feed the National squad, unfortunately. You should know that. England Clubs are falling apart.
