Belgian Tripel Comparison: Old World vs. New World

  • In this craft beer video, we're tasting four tripels, two from the United States and two from Belgium. Our friend wanted to bring a Belgian Tripel to a wedding so we brewed one up and tasted these tripels during that brew day. Check out our Belgian Tripel brewing video if you haven't, the beer turned out great and everyone at the wedding loved the beer. All of these tripels are bottle conditioned and unique in their own way. Besides talking about how the tripels taste, we also talk about the type of glass that a Belgian Tripel is traditionally drunk in. The first tripel we taste is the Westmalle Tripel which is brewed by Trappist monks in Belgium. Westmalle was the first to brew a tripel and their beverage can be considered the gold standard for the Belgian Tripel style. The second tripel we taste is the New Belgium Trippel which is Ross' favorite Tripel (he works for New Belgium). The third tripel we taste is a Dulle Teve (Mad Bitch) Tripel which is brewed in Belgium. Our friend at the local bottle shop recommended this one to us. The last tripel we taste is the Allagash Tripel. Allagash has become an extremely well-known brewery and is most famous for their Allagash White beer. Check out the resources below for our tripel brew day, brewing equipment, and an interesting article about the history of beer that talks about how the practice of brewing spread from the old world to the new world.

Great video and comparison of 2 similar but totally different beer styles. As a Belgian though, I almost screamed at those Westmalle pours. Belgians take care when pouring their beer. You start at a decent angle and pour slowly, finishing with the glass almost straight up. The beer is supposed to go in your glass in 1 pour. In this way you get a strong head that lasts long but doesn't fill 3/4 of your glass.

Please do a video where you compare and contrast various ingredients and how they affect your beer, like hops, malts, yeasts used on the exact same recipe which impart different flavors. Particularly interested in different malt suppliers such as comparing a normal beer recipe using Dingemans vs Castle or Weyermann vs Avangard or Bestmalz.

Did a quick up etymology search for the fellow nerds (and I'm Belgian, so I can use native language resources).
Tripel was first used in 1913 to refer to a high-alcohol trappist style beer.
Westmalle started using the term commercially in 1956 for its tripel.
So interbellum is correct if you average them, but entirely wrong for either :D

The Bavarian so called "Reinheitsgebot" had one and only one reason: Keeping the price of bread low by forbidding the use of wheat for beer brewing. Barley is not suitable for bread making because unlike wheat, it lacks gluten forming proteins and unlike rye it also lacks gel forming fibres. High bread prices had been the primary cause of revolts since antiquity and smart rulers tried to prevent such revolts by keeping the prices of bread low or by giving out free grain or bread as in the Roman empire. The Bavarian King decided to use a form of market regulation instead and decreed that wheat and rye could only be used for baking and brewers had to use barley so they would not compete with bakers for the grain. That is all the so called Reinheitsgebot was intended for and it worked. The name "Reinheitsgebot" (purity decree) was only invented centuries later when Bavaria was negiotiating its membership in the new German Empire under a Prussian emperor. At that point Bavarian breweries did not want the competition from breweries in the rest of the German Empire and they argued that it was about quality but that was nothing but spin. And if the so called Reinheitsgebot was actually applied in Bavaria, then there would be no Bavarian Weizen-beer, because Weizen means wheat and thus Weizenbier is wheat beer, which violates the so called Reinheitsgebot.
The so called Reinheitsgebot is a propaganda lie.

You are pouring it wrong ( not even rotating the last inch or 3cm at the end of the bottle ) and the Westmalle glass is not tulip shaped at all like Omer.Than I think Omer blonde is better to start drinking 8% alcohol, Westmalle trippel is a bit heavy on the alcohol taste. I know Westveteler is to expensive but you should try a 8 year old number 12.
