  • São Luís, the capital of Maranhão state in northeastern Brazil, is a vibrant and historic city known for its rich culture, colonial architecture, and lively atmosphere. Founded by the French in 1612 and later occupied by the Dutch before falling under Portuguese rule, São Luís boasts a unique blend of influences that make it a captivating destination for travelers. The city is located on the São Luís Island, surrounded by stunning beaches and lush green landscapes, offering a perfect mix of urban excitement and natural beauty.
One of the most remarkable aspects of São Luís is its well-preserved historic center, known as the "Reviver," which was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997. Visitors can wander through the cobblestone streets, admiring the colorful colonial mansions adorned with traditional Portuguese azulejo tiles. This area is also home to several important museums, such as the Museum of Visual Arts and the Museum of Reggae, which showcase the city's rich cultural heritage and its strong connection to reggae music.
São Luís is famous for its lively cultural scene, particularly the annual Bumba Meu Boi festival, which takes place in June and July. This traditional folk celebration features music, dancing, and theatrical performances, with participants wearing elaborate costumes representing various characters from local folklore. The festival is a testament to the city's strong Afro-Brazilian heritage and is a must-see event for anyone visiting during this time. Additionally, São Luís has a vibrant culinary scene, offering visitors the opportunity to indulge in delicious local dishes like arroz de cuxá, peixada maranhense, and guarnicê.
Beyond the city's historic and cultural attractions, São Luís also offers a variety of natural beauty to explore. The stunning coastline surrounding the city features numerous beaches, such as Araçagy, Calhau, and Olho d'Água, which provide excellent spots for sunbathing, swimming, and enjoying fresh seafood at beachside restaurants. Furthermore, São Luís serves as a gateway to the Lençóis Maranhenses National Park, making it a convenient base for travelers wishing to explore the incredible sand dunes and lagoons of this unique region. With its rich history, diverse culture, and stunning surroundings, São Luís is a captivating destination for any traveler visiting Brazil.

Love the colonial architecture! Another great video. Just to let you know… I found out today that as of October 2023 US citizens will now be required to obtain a tourist visa to Brazil. I have been in a panic all day as we are traveling in 2 weeks and was unable to find definitive requirement dates on the internet. The airline was more helpful than the state department 😮
