    By the way, this song was shot on location in Kathmandu with actual hippies. Dev Anand recounts in his book how someone from the US wrote to him after the film came out thanking him for helping find his daughter.
    Because that daughter was one of the real hippies who was an extra in this film. The letter-writer recognised her this way.

    The actress Zeenat Aman was studying at the University of California on scholarship in the 60s and was a part of the whole hippie, rock culture scene, which is why she was cast in the role.

      Zeenat met Dev Sahab at a party of a mutual friend and knew he was looking for someone new to play Jasbir/Janice (Mumtaz Jee was cast as his love interest because she didn't want to play his sister on screen). She walked up to him in the party, blew cigarette smoke in his face and said 'Dev, I am your Janice'. And that's how she was cast.
      Source: Dev Sahab's fantastic autobiography.
      Again, he made Zeenat what she was. Shame no one acknowledges this.

    The man and his sister have been separated due to parents divorce. Man is in the police force. His father requests him to find his missing sister in khatmandu where she has gone with her hippy friends. The story is about how he gets her back. A good movie for the classics month. There is a mandatory love interest, but of course!

    Second part was where hero tells them not to malign the name of Lord Ram and Lord Krishna in trying to justify their wrong deeds. The 70's in India was the youth here was in the grip of Hippie culture. They were highly influenced by drugs n were moving away from the roots of Indian culture. An entire generation was becoming addicts. With this in mind a movie with a message was Hare Rama Hare Krishna. It gave the message that Rama bore all his problems in life with a smile and Krishna explained the Karma to us..Follow them and dont be weak n try to escape from problems through drugs..
    This song n lyrics is saying the same ..

      Lata was just as versatile. She just chose not to sing many songs of this nature but when she did, she was just as good. Even RD Burman in an interview acknowledged that Lata was the better singer.

    • @manb26
      @manb26 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@no127 we'll have to agree to disagree. While I think Lata is a very skillful singer, she is nowhere near as versatile as Asha. Lata would not be able to sing Dum Maro Dum or Piya Tu as well as Asha. Her style of singing and her vocal tone just wouldn't suit these songs. But just my opinion.

    • @no127
      @no127 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@manb26 Lata's rendition of 'Aa jaane ja' shows that she was very capable of singing such songs. Yes, the style may be a bit different. However, since we are talking about versatility, there are several other genres where Lata has a clear edge, like haunting melodies, patriotic songs, sad songs, singing in a pampered young girl's voice etc. If you listen intently enough you will even notice how she skilfully changed her voice for different actresses and even at times for the characters and situations like in Amrapali, Pakeezah, Dastak etc. So, no harm in having an individual favourite but I don't buy into the theory that Lata wasn't as versatile🤷‍♂️

    • @manb26
      @manb26 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@no127 I respect your opinion but it's just not the same as mine. Aa Jaane Ja was clearly composed with Lata's voice in mind (which L-P often did) and as a result the song suits her voice perfectly. But the song isn't as frenetic as Piya Tu Ab To Aaja or Duniya Mein Logon Ko or even Aaja Aaja Main Hoon Pyar Tera. Lata has never sung any songs like these and I don't buy the excuse that she just "chose" not to sing them. I'm not denying her skill in other styles. I just prefer Asha's voice and her songs for me encompass a much greater repertoire of musical styles. Just for clarification, I absolutely love many Lata songs such as Baahon Mein Chale Aao, Aisa Sama Na Hota, Kya Jaanoo Sajan, Mere Naseeb Mein, Bindiya Chamkegi, Haan Jab Tak Hain Jaan Main Nachungi, Hai Hai Yeh Majboori, etc.

    Iconic RD Burman-Asha Bhonsle swinging sixties song where the style diva Zeenat Aman makes a smashing debut....her character is swaying to the music and hash, singing 'Take a puff, forget all your worries in chanting the name of Ram (the human avatar/incarnation of Vishnu, the preserver; hero of the epic Ramayan) and Krishna (the complete divine avatar of Vishnu; He spoke the Bhagvad Gita in the epic Mahabharat).
    Her brother played by the legendary but highly stylized Dev Anand (if you think SRK has image-trap mannerisms, wait till you watch Dev saab!) reminds the stoned hippie crowd to stop insulting Lords Ram and Krishna and reflect on what they actually stood for. Lord Ram sacrificed his happiness and kingdom for the sake of his father's word while Lord Krishna taught us about always doing our Karma (moral/ethical duty) despite the circumstances. The hippie crowd chanting their names are running away from reality and their duties, seeking happiness in gratification. Meanwhile the cigarette-smoking sidekicks of the drug lords are giving the moralizing brother dark looks because his words can hurt their business (they beat him up right after smashing the glass at the end!)

    • @saatsamunder15
      @saatsamunder15 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You summed it up nicely. But Dev during the black and white era, before he developed his trademark mannerisms was a fine actor. He was versatile easily skipping from comedy to cynical. He made the popular noir classics with the the small town thieves,smugglers,black market racketeers and sundry other antiheroes varying from realistic to happily-ever-afters. Bombai ka babu, Kala Bazar, Tere ghar ke samne etc are gems.

    • @ritusehgal6140
      @ritusehgal6140 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Dev Anand's filmography in the black-and-white era has some of the greatest timeless classics with some of the most urban and modern female characters and absolutely gorgeous songs! My personal favorites are the ones directed by his brother Vijay 'Goldie' Anand - 'Hum Dono' (the two of us), 'Tere Ghar ke Saamne' (in front of your home) and Guide (the Hindi one).

      @@ritusehgal6140 I love Vijay Anand's films with Dev. Completely mainstream but not dumbed down for the audience. Yes, the heroines of Navketan films are very independent and forward thinking -whether they are urban or rural. Waheeda from Kala Bazar who dares to change her mind after falling in love with a second man while being engaged to her college sweetheart or Sadhana who decides to move in with her boyfriend's mother or Kalpana from Nau do gyarah who dares to run away from her own wedding. But the Vijay Anand films from the 70s like Chupa Rustam and Johny Mera Naam were mediocre though the music still remained superb.

    • @ant5630
      @ant5630 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Completely spot on. Great to see people recognising Dev A and Navketan films and how ‘modern’ they were. It doesn’t get talked about as much by industry, film channels, critics etc.

Probably was the start of moralizing and religiosity in Bollywood. Honestly, the reason Bollywood is vilified today is because they portray people as so pure and loving .. so self sacrificing that nobody can live up to that image, least of all Bollywood!
