One thing that really stood out for me was the match cuts. Vi down the tube to the bullet entering the chamber, close up of Cait on the bed to Jinx on the doctor's table,.... Then there's cuts that are like match cuts but separated sometimes episodes apart. For example, the Mage in Jayce's flashback oping his hand to engage the crystal to much later Jayce reaching up and closing his fist around the light of the Hextec Gate. But maybe the most amazing was a cut that was both those things. The necklace in the blood at the end of Mel's flash back to the painting on the wall when she jerks upright in bed. Not only the story that told of Mel's inner conflict but how it was connected to Marcus' coin in Greyson's blood in episode 3 and later him looking at that coin with regret in his eyes. There are these amazing cuts worthy of comparison to bone to spaceship in 2001 Space Odyssey or match to sun in Lawrence of Arabia in every episode. Film schools just throw out your text books and teach this. Had Stanley Kubrick, Kisho Kurokawa, David Lean, the Coen Brothers,.... filmed this live action it would be considered their magnum opus.

@@day5001 I definitely agree with this response. However I do want to sliiiiiightly support the INDIVIDUALS in piltover. Innovation is not itself oppressive. But that has definitely been the underbelly of innovation in runeterra as well as our world. I think this is partially where heimerdinger's perspective comes from. It's not just a fear of magic, but a fear of rapid change. Yes, this does imply his position of privilege to remain complacent, but it also shows a certain wisdom. I'm very intrigued to see how Heim's perspective changes in season 2 after having been shown a sort of third option through the firelight sanctuary.
Conversely with Jayce (and Viktor, but technically he's a zaunite so I guess it doesn't make sense to rely on him for this point), his flaw is indeed arrogance, but it is arrogance through naivety (whereas heimer is arrogance through wisdom). It's also interesting that Jayce's drive comes from being saved by magic in an otherwise utterly horrifying situation, whereas heimer's life was destroyed by magic. So many god damn parallels.
But anyway, the general point here is that there are values represented in piltover that should not be cast aside. They are de facto corrupted, perhaps ultimately by heimer's fear based complacency (piltover's political system is still pretty shallowly portrayed in this show/unclear. Surely these 5 loons don't run the whole fuckin city right? Idk I think that was one of the weaker parts of the show's world building), BUT I think they are still tapping into something that I consider fundamentally human-- curiosity. And curiosity I feel is ultimately derived from humility. And humility is what piltover would need to immediately sacrifice it's position in the p/z dynamic in order to uplift all peoples in both territories.
Anyway that was kinda rambly but I think this nuance applies to our world as well. Capitalism does have a messy origin of compassion and authoritarianism, and we've seen the outcomes (innovation) informed by both I think. Hopefully we can bring some humility to the world (or celebrate where it already exists). I wonder if Arcane has the insight to realize that's the 'third way' implied by their narrative.

  • @dragonicdoom3772
    @dragonicdoom3772 ปีที่แล้ว +47

God that ending had me shaken. Its interesting how they turned the "snap out of it"/"remember who you are" trope on its head. Vi doesn't understand that Jinx doesn't want to snap out of it, that her Jinx persona is a coping mechanism for her trauma. By bringing up the people she's lost/killed its just making her guilt worse, hence why all the imaginary monsters surround her as she covers her head. Vi loves Powder, but not Jinx, that's why Jinx says Vi has changed. Jinx never learned that she needed to accept her mistakes to grow past them: its why she keeps messing things up, she doesn't learn from her mistakes so she keeps making the same ones over and over.

    • @jordanthompson5696
      @jordanthompson5696 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Well said. I think this scene also portrays her general lack of a support system which would have helped her learn from her mistakes. Silco cares for her sincerely, but he's no father. He's been torn for years and years on his responsibilities. Notice that Vi is as you say. She's making things worse through her intentional effort to help jinx. But Silco doesn't say anything. He seems to me like he knows what vi is causing in Jinx's mind, but he doesn't have any words of support or consolation or stabilization. He has desperation to act, which is something of course. It shows care, but most of his practical tactics have been devoted to his mission for zaun, not jinx, so he has nothing to do in this situation but struggle and end the problem as quickly and narrowly as possible, through shooting Vi.
I think this perfectly depicts the themes of the show, and how there really is no non systemic solution to any of these individual character's problems.

The more and more I think about Jinx as a character, the more tragic, justified, and fleshed out she becomes for me. Such a product of the abuse of Piltover, part retribution, part chaos. Yet somehow her actions feel justified in light of the past wrongs done to her. She's so complex, and I feel for her more now having watched that final scene 50 times, than I did the first time. This show really just gets better the more you watch it.

Bro I will actually miss this cause I love watching the vids and I wont lie, I skip past parts of the reaction to hear the analysis and you almost made me tear up with how much respect you show through your body language and how much you noticed throughout the series.
And I agree with you completely. No one, not even the fans of the game expected this show to hit as hard as it did. Everything was finished to such a level that their never seemed to be any wasted scene or momentum. Everything was strategically placed in order for the audience to gain information and even though they sped through the story extremely fast, it never felt rushed. Before we had time to process one thing we were moving on to the other and when we would feel happy they would cut to something sad and vice versa to keep us from dwelling on one thing for too long.
The characters were all scarily human despite being heroes. The perspective is not from the lens of a "good" character. It's from the perspective of a bunch of greedy, angry, desperate and flawed humans trying to do what they think is right. Even Cait and Viktor, who were the stereotypical hero's were rendered powerless in the end despite being the only characters trying to do good for everyone because of how human everyone is. People don't care to do the "right" thing when they feel trapped. Even though Marcus wasn't a likeable character I liked how they made his character because he was just a scared man who just felt hopeless and beaten in many ways. You could tell he wanted to do the right thing but never had the courage to go through with it because that's just how we are as humans. Not every human can be a hero, and not every hero is humane.

And it's when he's directly confronted with it when Vi is getting in Jinx's head that we see the desperation manifest itself physically.
And his last words are just perfect. He knew he was done for, and he knew that Jinx would blame herself for this, so his last words are reassuring ones. Everyone else sees her as a fuck up, but to Silco, she's perfect. And he needed to remind her of that.

See also the game Dishonored 2, which has a similar painterly look in general and also does wonderful things with light and lenses. (Also done by a French studio, hence why I brought up the country)

That's the glorious part of 10:20. Even when people know that Cait is a part of the game itself, no one I've seen has been 100% sure that Cait's head wouldn't be under that lid. There's always been that sigh or chuckle of relief when the cupcake is shown.

what adds to that is that the creators have said that no one is safe, as this is not cannon with the game. so they essentially have freedom to take this wherever they choose because of that. and having vadner, mylo and clagger die in epi three makes all of the danger feel that much more real.

loved taking the journey with you! also if you didn't notice, the scene where vi is telling jinx to think of their family, vander, Mylo, claggor etc, it's not helping her. those people in her mind have that monster overlay and they're terrorising her. vi doesn't know it's effecting her that way and thinks she's helping. so when silco says "don't listen to her" he's not being manipulative to stop her from joining vi, he is trying to help her because he knows vi is hurting her.
the last thing silco did before he died was try to help her. and the last thing he said was "you're perfect" not jinx is perfect or powder, just her. as she is.
this show is unbeatable. prove me wrong.

if you notice, the crows are associated with Jinx, as they always appear when she is on the precipice of a major change. as crows are a symbol for change or choice. then, jinx's chair is covered in crows feathers, so when she sits on the chair, she becomes the crow-the symbol of change- for the city, and her actions will irrevocably change "what could've been"

Im by no means an emotional person, and im not lying when I say pretty much no tv shows or movies have made me cry, i mean i feel the emotions, just never cry. But the season finale of Arcane literally had me sobbing like my own mother died 😭. And i think that in and of itself really proves just how much of a masterpiece this show is, and to do that in just a measly 9 episodes is genuinly insane. The amount of character development and emotional connection the studio managed to create in that 9 episodes is literally something ive never experienced before. Im so so so glad that season 2 will be coming out in November of 2024! I can't believe its already been years since this show came out. Its felt like a literal eternity just to wait for season 2 😂!

One of my favorite things about this series is just what you mention about none of the characters being black and white morally. Even Silco, the main "villain" of the piece is actually pursuing goals that we pretty much universally consider to be noble: freedom, opportunity, ending oppression, etc. Some of history's greatest heroes were pursuing those goals. What makes Silco a monster is that he literally has no limits to the means by which he pursues those goals. Throughout the show too, every decision he makes is grounded in the character, and all make sense from his perspective. Just really amazing.

You can almost respect Sevika for her reasoning. She admitted she is a bit conflicted, but she will never betray Silco for weak reasons or in favor of weak people. Such as he is, she recognizes that he is their best option...for the moment. Blind loyalty is uninspiring because it isn't that different from being ideologically enchained. Sevika is loyal with a purpose that she has supported firmly within her.

the scene where Silco talks to that chem-baron guy is actually a test of Sevika,if Silco is weak even a little, the person being slashed at that time could be Silco, but it seems even during this time with his life at stake,Silco still showed the level of a big boss and passed Sevika's test.

He described it as being in the genre of grim dark. And yeah. I get it.

    She's a jinx.
And if she's going to be a jinx, then she will be the worst bad luck that has ever hit Piltover.

I know it's not me you asked, but IMO the main thing is that it actually told a story which the viewer sympathizes with and is moved by (no matter what the set pieces and fantasy elements are) and it didn't just focus on the flashy things (and when it did, it was well earned).
The human element is the most important, helped by the wonderful quality of animation and voice acting. The other aspects must follow from there. I think the other adaptations are missing this crucial humanity and it's why they just feel empty.

The real poetry of this ending is that by choosing to be Jinx instead of Powder, she deliberately repeats her actions that she made at the end of the third episode, in the same place: Involving herself in Vander's breakout is ultimately what caused Vander, Mylo and Clagor to die. Now, she's continuing that path and attacks the Council just as they were about to establish peace and allow Zaun's independence.

    Theory:
Jinxs minigun is named Pow-Pow and somewhere in Arcane Vi calls Powder Pow-Pow as a nickname, meaning that Jinx named the minigun after her childhoodself. Considering that it is exactly this gun that killed Silco, could it be that the gun was named after Powder, because it was in Jinxs mind Powder that shot Silco to save Vi from being shot by him?
    What do you think?

(not muffin.. cupcake..) ;) 1) silco had depth, but the 'discussion' with Vander's statue knocked it out of the park.. you could write a book about hidden meanings etc.. 2) that rematch had sooo many elements.. 3) the transitions: Sky, Cait's mom.. 4) perfect music. 5) perfect ending. the series was a masterpiece and i'm doubting the emotional ride it took us on will ever be matched.

I would love to see a special episode about a couple of scenes with Sevika. First scene is when one of the chembarons (golden jaw, tatooed guy) tries to reason with her and make her betray Silco. Then the scene when she meets with Silco is his office, two chem barons with her, and even Silco is unsure what is going to happen next. There was so much character narrative and "communication without speaking" where the writers were not afraid to let the audience think for themselves. I adored the show for that, so I would love to see those scenes picked apart, how its all shot, how/why the camera focuses on characters or why it does not, why they do what they do with the sound design...those scenes just stood out to me so much from a narrative perspective, that i want to dive deeper.

There's no mincing words. Best animated series ever made. imo, best animated ANYTHING ever made. Every frame LITERALLY looks like a painting, even though it's such a seamless blend of 2d and 3d, it looks 2d. EVERYTHING is amazing about it and I mean everything, all the areas you can break down, it is inspired, and I literally only learned it existed the very same day I first watched it. No hype, no expectations, no bias for League of Legends prior, but it FLOORED me. I could not believe how incredible it was. This is what I love. Massive productions of exceptional quality all over the place, that take MILLIONS to make and yet it feels somehow as if it was a labour of total love from everyone involved, it just shines through on screen.
If season 2 doesn't match up to this, I'm not even gonna be mad about it, because they have nothing to prove anymore. If it does somehow, I will literally thank the entire crew by name in the credits every goddamn time I watch it.

I'm pretty sure it will be spectacular and in some ways will exceed the first one. The thing that will be really hard to replicate is the emotional power of the core Vi-Jinx story - I hope they'll succeed in creating something similar.
