2. Role of the American mafia: The American mafia was heavily involved in Cuba’s lucrative gambling, hotel, and entertainment industries, particularly in Havana. Figures like Meyer Lansky worked closely with Batista’s government to establish Cuba as a playground for American tourists, often at the expense of ordinary Cubans. This collaboration deepened the socioeconomic divide and fueled discontent among the population.
3. Fleeing the revolution: When the revolution came, many wealthy Cubans, along with those tied to the mafia or Batista’s regime, did indeed flee the country. While some fled due to fear of justice for past corruption, not all who fled were involved in criminal activities. Many left due to fear of political persecution under Castro’s regime, especially after it became clear that he would implement socialist policies that nationalized industries and redistributed wealth.
The Cuban revolution was a response to the concentration of wealth and power among a small elite and the deep ties between the Batista regime and foreign entities, including the mafia
