  • @MikeKleinsteuber

    I've had mine now for a week and can categorically say they are a solution looking for a problem. Except possibly for enterprise. They don't actually have a navigation app which they show in most of their videos but is not on their app store. The phone link is flaky at best and really frustrating when it doesn't connect. The only thing that works well are the notifications but then they're just as good on my smart watch and you don't have to wear something on your face all the time. I've now tried all the main AR glasses including Magic Leap, Hololens, ODG, Google Glass and now Blade. Google was the most user friendly and useful but Google, dim as they are, decided to pull them for no good reason at all. My considered opinion now is that AR is dead in the water for at least 10 years till they give us really lightweight tech and some good reasons to use it.

    • @MobikSaysStuff
      @MobikSaysStuff ปีที่แล้ว

      2 years later, how do you feel about this "AR is dead" thing? With apple vision pro, quest 3, rokid and xreal around?

    • @MikeKleinsteuber
      @MikeKleinsteuber ปีที่แล้ว

      Well I've just bought a Quest3 and love some of their MR apps, so we're getting there. However, we need the devs to create a few more real world MR apps other than just simplistic games. What the Q3 is showing us is that MR really can be viable given the right app. It's now up to the dev community to get on and give us the apps. What I would say however is that everyday AR is still the 8 years away at least that I talked about previously. The tech just isn't there yet, beyond pretty chunky goggles.@@MobikSaysStuff

    Normal size glasses connected to a phone would be my jam.
    Dont need a swipe replacement, it just needs 2 screens a battery and a receiver.

      I've seen some ideas that apply finger rings. I think that's a better approach than this one or the HoloLens since it's more discrete to use in public. The finger ring(s) could also store some extra sensors, memory and features.

    I can't wait until we get to the point where manufacturers decide to stop trying to do crazy things, and just make the smart glasses a second screen for your phone. It's simpler, requires less complicated tech, cheaper. It would be better. Sell it with a couple rings. You use one to move a mouse, one to click. Could be the same ring, even. Just give us a second screen for the phone, please. Put the display in the corner, not directly in front of the eye, as another commenter mentioned.
    And as someone else brought up, give us a camera that zooms with a display for it, so we can zoom in on things as if we have bionic eyes. That would be the most incredible smart glasses you could ask for.

    • @Shonicheck
      @Shonicheck 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well there were smart glasses that were just a glorified second screen for smartphone, they even came with a ring. They were a start up of some sort, the company was bought out by someone a few years after they started the production though and they no lomger sell them.

  • @patriot7260
    @patriot7260 5 ปีที่แล้ว +20

    Honestly, I can't for the life of me figure out why the information has to be visible across someone's entire right or left eye. Seriously they can display that exact same information in as much detail at like a half of the size, and an entire scale of the info's distance to the side *away* from the center of vision. I think one of the biggest problems right now with these "smart glasses" concepts is that they feel like they have to make it all visible and flashy for people. Now don't get me wrong, that's awesome, but these people need to play some triple-A video games and study the interfaces on them... IE: they need to take a very close look at what makes the HUD on a game so useful and informative- without being so distracting or obnoxious- thus saving the players' ability to focus on what is important (in this case traffic or I don't know- light posts), and only need to look with their eyes to the right, left, up, down, etc. *AWAY FROM THE CENTER OF THEIR VISION* at a smaller display to get an idea of information available.
    That's how a successful HUD works; By placing need-to-know information off to the side and out of the way- but easily accessible to the individual. Not by planting a giant, obnoxious screen in the center of their vision to distract them with.

    • @codyofathens3397
      @codyofathens3397 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Exactly. I can just imagine someone getting a text at the same moment the car in front of them hits the brakes. That's gonna be absolutely lovely, and designs like this, that are not thought out beforehand, are why certain types of tech get outlawed before they have a chance to really grow into something amazing.

    • @xanderkyron
      @xanderkyron 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@codyofathens3397 ...why would you drive with a screen in front of you anyway? It's already illegal to use your phone while driving and it's just irresponsible to choose to distract yourself and put people in danger whether centered or not. These aren't meant for driving. Just not your use case.

    • @codyofathens3397
      @codyofathens3397 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@xanderkyron well, because these devices are clearly being intended to be worn by people as their main glasses. Additionally, a mostly transparent, and off centered, HUD could be incredible beneficial to a driver. Speed, thermostats, traffic, et cetera could be displayed, as well as warning about hazards in the road that a high speed camera may pick up well before a driver would. Clearly the tech isn't there yet, but it is absolutely, 100% something that people will do. People will drive with AR glasses on, and you'll never stop them from doing it. Outlaw it, and make it so they lock when driving, and people will root or jailbreak them. It's going to happen. So why not make them safe to begin with?

    • @codyofathens3397
      @codyofathens3397 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@xanderkyron A few key changes, like an off centered HUD, and a Bluetooth paired ring to act as a cursor, instead of tapping the side of your head, or trying to use gestures, would allow people a much safer experience for the behavior they *will be engaging in* regardless of the legality of it.

    • @aritakalo8011
      @aritakalo8011 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There is no display driver in the left lens. Camera sits there. However technologically there is no reason why they couldn't build a dual unit. Vuzix has actually shown a concept and proto unit of dual display unit. Main reason for single display unit is probably cost and power consumption. The extremely high tech custom waveguide optics aren't cheap or easy to make. hence the probably to some eye watering cost of 1000 $.
      This isn't a simple 45° lens and projector setup. This is some of the most finely build and high tech optics on the market. Hence why they can get the display to middle of the users view and as large as it is with out strapping hololens like contraption on the head.
      So dual display unit would probably cost double to 2000$.
      Plus second display would mean second projector, whivh would mean larger battery or shorter usage time.
      What the moving around means is that they display area is large enough, that one can move the picture inside it. Presumable the displayed image doesn't take the whole area all the time.

    Is it just I, or are we under the impression that people will only be ‘walking and running’ when wearing these glasses? LOL why not make the glasses so that, when you get into your car, the heads up display syncs with your cars technology (wirelessly of course!) to show the speedometer, gas usage, battery levels, gear, tachometer, oil readings and etc, on the glasses?
    Or better yet, have it so that the glasses can autonomously see behind the car, on the sides as well as in front (wirelessly synced cameras on the car and the glasses would mimic as a monitor of them)? Like, have the glasses internal barometer show the left side of what’s on the cars left, and when you turn towards the right side - have the glasses show what’s on the right of the car? Up and down could display front and rear cameras, respectively!
    It’s just stupid to see how they are talking ‘only’ about applications when people are using gps for “walking” to a location - SMH

    cool, but still too big and heavy for the mainstream. I think that is the biggest problem for decent ARglasses. Lets wait for stronger chips

    These are very likely going to fail. Who wants a swipe pad on glasses and who has a need for these? Instead they should make it so your smart phone or smart watch controls what you see. This device should be counted as a peripheral and not a main. Way over priced for what they offer.

    This isn’t Augmented Reality.... all that is, is a projected display with nothing layered on top of the real world. FYI augmented reality is like Pokémon go. Projected image on the real world, not on your lenses, it’s just smart glasses.
