simply fantastic! always loved Blackmore's slide work. Lately I was trying to figure out this RB's technique by listening to Maybe Next Time (terrific song, I just love it), so thank you, perfect timing with the last two videos! this is surely the best channel to understand Ritchie's playing
His slide playing is the most underrated thing about him for sure. Although I never covered it on video I did tab Lady of the Lake (along with almost all Dio era Rainbow songs) and it does have some beautiful slides and harmonies with the slide too. gum.co/iaqYv
Holding the slide in that way does make it easier for Ritchie to simply drop it any time he wants to use his fingers. Sad that he is so underrated and isn't mentioned or given the respect that his peers receive. It's always Beck, Clapton and Page, but Ritchie should be considered up there with them.
For the studio stuff, RB has a gtr set up for slide with a high action...I remember that from that ol' gtr collection video interview. I used 'maybe next time' as my slide learning song. It's very slow and deliberate and has enough string flipping to make it a little challenging. The slow tempo of it makes it easier to work on the tuning intonation as the notes hang longer at the slow tempo.
I remember he had his lower strings taken off the breatboard in that video but I rewatched it now and he says that guitar is mainly his live stage guitar. I doubt he would always put the strings to the side especially because he is playing a lot of slide live with a regular guitar. I agree maybe next time is a great slide learning song.
Awesome lesson again. Some real great tips to try out! Always love Blackmore's slide playing and tone. I think the best slide playing I fell in love with in the seventies was Jackson Brown's running on empty.👍👍👍
NO one compares to Blackmore! You are fantastic though thank you very much for this video . I will Buy rainbow bundle and patreon soon when I can afford thank you for making the bundle
Thank you, i agree Blackmore is an unmatched legend. I have a 50% off coupon for Patreon supporters that makes the rainbow bundle a whole lot cheaper ;)
You Green Telecaster looks like it has a B-bender and G bender added? Which Rainbow songs did Blackmore use the Harmonic Minor scale and Phrygian dominant scale using the SLIDE? Because mostly I just only hear him using the Pentatonic scale when playing Slide
Yes it has a B and G bender. I have a couple of guitar collection videos on my channel showing my guitars and I play it in one of them. Stargazer is an obvious one. Catch the rainbow too. Probably lady of the lake as well. Most of he time he plays pentatonic and natural minor he uses the phrygian very sparingly. If you wanna get into exotic scales listen to malmsteen.
@@waynegram8907 I haven't done any lessons yet (but if I will it's gonna be on my other channel blueswillismusic) but I am playing the bender here: th-cam.com/video/vMHUwaSz4-Q/w-d-xo.html
When i am holding it in my hands like Blackmore it doestnt really matter. I am not even sure which dunlop slide it is. But if you are wearing it in your finger it has to fit nice and snug so choose a size according to your finger.
That’s a good question! It is not high at all, but it is not set to shred level of lowest action possible. Think of medium. If you have your strat set to fender specs that should be fine BUT go easy on the slide, it has to be lightly touching the strings so it does not push the string down to fret out.
Thank you for your reply! I have a strat for example that I use only for slide and on that I have a high action and also big gauge strings (12-52) Sonny Landreth style basically 😊 and it’s amazing but of course I can only use that for slide. Now, on my other strat I would like to do both. I raised the action on 1.75 but still even with a light touch it is not great. So I wonder if it has to go up a bit more?
@@danielecataldi4429 i think the best measure is how you feel. So if it is still not best for slide try raising it a little so you can still feel comfortable playing without the slide. I have slide dedicated guitars as well but on my strats I mostly play regular and slide only sometimes I lean towards comfort for finger playing.
Ritchie most certainly was familiar with lap-steel guitars played with bars, as can be seen on this clip here: th-cam.com/video/IECo3FAGQBw/w-d-xo.html.

It's Ritchie's best song I think regarding slide playing. Amazing song and playing!
Great video - Blackmore's slide playing is underrated e.g. Lady of Lake. He has said that when he doesnt know what to play he grabs his slide.

Agree on both counts. He is criminally underrated if you ask me :)
Or even higher in my opinion 🎸🎸🎸
This was a very good slide lesson in general, keep it up man 👍🏻
Thank you!

Even Ritchie's approach to slide is sounds orginal, and looks cool, he doesn't wear it on the finger. Thanks for the video.
He is unique in everything he does!

I wasnt familiar with it so I just listened. Good song and great slide! Nowadays I really enjoy JD Simo’s and Larkin Poe’s slide playing.
@@DogwithtwoBones yes they are very good. Another one that comes to mind is Sonny Landreth.
@@darlenemcmillan5802 exactly and however they are not related he reminded me of Joey Landreth.
This is a 'standing ovation' video!
Thanks a lot!
Could you please make a video of how to play Ritchie's guitar solo from Under The Gun live in Sydney 1984??
I barely play 80s Purple but I love that song, I’ll check it up but dont get your hopes up just yet.
Excellent video mate. 👍🏼🎸

Hi Bro,I'm listening to Deep Purple Live At Montreaux 1969..I Think Blackmore was playing Gibson ES-335 in this show...What do you think?
I'd say mostly yes but speed king and mandrake root had to be the strat already.
Great lesson bro!!!!
Thanks man!
Dunlop 220, Dunlop 320, what size in the slide?
Not sure, probably 220. Havent bought one in years.
