Merrell Barracks 3/10/1992

  • After the Gulf War, I had some extra cash so I bought a video camera. Very unusual thing to have in the early 90s.
This is a short walk inside a small section of the West wing shortly before the 2nd ACR returned this massive building back to the Germans and redeployed back to the United States.
This was taken March 10, 1992, a couple days after I bought the camera, so I was still learning how to operate it. My apologies for the shaky/crooked footage.
You might want to ignore my commentary. Most of it is wrong, but I didn't want to remove the sound of the halls. We were taught the history of the 2nd ACR during our orientation. We had to learn the history of the SS Barracks (Merrell Barracks) and Zeppelin Field on our own, via word of mouth. No Google or Wikipedia back in 1992.
At the time of this video we were in the process of redeploying back to the United States so the place was very unkept and in disarray. Many of the rooms were already emptied-out, and in the video, especially as we passed the 3rd floor, you can see all the mattress bed springs, night stands and other furniture stacked out in the hallway.
12:32 shows the buildings with the gym and bowling ally, which no longer exists.
13:12 has a quick shot of the NCO club, which also no longer exists.
Enjoy. I doubt there is another video of the inside of Merrell Barracks before it was returned to the German government.

Man, that sure does bring back some memories! I swear, the room you went into at 2:42 seems like it may have been mine back in 1985!
    Thank you for posting this!

Jan. 1971 - I'll never forget my first walk down that hallway and the "funny smell" coming from the rooms.

B battery 3/17 1975 to 1978. At minute 14 ,I recognize that very room as our first Sergeant's room that I reported to in September ' 75. Barracks look very similar. No elevators back then.

Thank you for the memories. That room must have been my room too. I remember the window that opened onto the quad. It housed 2ACR medics in 1982 - 1983. But it was only a mailstop. We were either in Graf, Wilflicken, Hohenfells, or Sectors 3 -17 and Southern Bavarian Command on die Grenze. Great you got this for posterity. Take me back.

One time I went up in the attic and it was so loaded with pigeon crap I figured we could have used it for MOPP and Hazmat training. It was like 4 feet deep.

One thing missing that I have photos of is the brick wall on the inside near the HQ parade area that had massive bullet holes in it, where allegedly the SS took target practice on live victims brought-up from the city. Also, underneath the Chapel carpet were leftover white and black inlaid tiles that contained Swastikas that I am sure were torn out of the place before the US Army unassed it for the last time. We used to surreptitiously lift the carpet and steal glances.

Das SS Kaserne(barracks) was built between 1933-36 according to Historical Data, and according to former Waffen-SS Sergeant Herr Bauer who was a Tailor within C-Battery 17th Artillery when I served in Charlie Battery and, later, 3rd Battalion 17th Artillery Personnel Office. My 3year Army Tour in Bavaria allowed me to travel On Leave several times in Bavaria, Austria, Switzerland and to enjoy Bavaria's, over 300 year old, Food and Spirits Standards. That Parade Field was Steel Girder supported with a Motor Pool, Runway to the Airfield, Marshaling Area, and Firing Range UNDERNEATH IT! Yes, I ate in the Mess Hall when pressed for time. But, evenings had me visiting many Gasthaus around Nurnberg AND at 7th ARMY and BUNDESWEHR Training/Tactics area set up
AROUND the Small Village of Vilseck. Yes! years of great memories there for me too.
