My free ancestors came to GA in 1803. No one can locate their graves. I, among so many others, love this channel and all the history Robert brings. At the same time, I hope folks realize that it's not just many of the enslaved ones whose graves and history cannot be found, but other pioneers as well. I'm not saying this to be mean or insensitive in any way. Just citing truth that in this day and age is often overlooked. I don't mean to be offensive.

It’s so sad that only one marker is engraved. It kinda breaks my heart that these men, women n children lived a life that’s not recognized.

Just walking thru and pointing out indentions where someone was laid to rest over 100 years ago is a great way to remember these people. I wish they could have all had stones with their names but God knows everything about each life. They are not unknown to Him. Brings back the sadness of not being able to locate the burial places of my family in Carter County, Ky.
Thank you for bringing attention to these lost cemeteries. I imagine the people buried there having ancestors up to today who probably don't know they even existed. Which is very sad. I'm sure common, but very sad.
I'm wondering if the box grave was for someone highly loved and revered to the family. Seems to be a grave suited for someone special. Although there's no headstone with name, unless it was taken long ago.
Can't help but imagine who all of the people were, their lives on the plantation, historical events they were alive to see, etc.

Yay! Joy’s back! And Aunt Norma and Cecil! Robert, you surround yourself with really wonderful people! This walk through the old slave cemetery was so interesting. Thank you Robert for pointing out the indentions signifying a burial beneath. I would miss so many if you didn’t. The fieldstone boxes around a couple of the graves was particularly interesting. Would other slaves have built the box or were only white people allowed to make such decisions? I can’t help but wonder if the fieldstone boxes indicated an esteemed leader or such. Thank you for sharing another fascinating look into the past!

Always interesting videos. I rescued a pioneer cemetery from about 1870 here in Nebraska. I agree with another commenter who said the bird might be an Eastern Wood-pewee.

Every cemetery that you document leaves me wondering if there is an estimate made by historians of the numbers of souls that died enslaved. The box tomb really makes one wonder who is buried there. Interesting and the bird is too. ❣❣👍👍

She's just a friend of his who has a small family cemetery in Talbot or Harris County or in that area. She's from Georgia originally but lives in the Seattle area now and comes back for frequent visits.

Joy is such a sweet lady. I love it when you bring her along. You are like two kids out exploring their own history. Subtract about twenty years from your age, go back in time about fifty, fictionalize a little and you could make this into a pretty good movie script. For some reason, maybe the particular side light this time, all the unmarked graves showed up very well in this video. Good content Robert.
Eastern-wood peewee?- I think that's the bird you heard.
As you are pointing out the old graves. Do you stand at the top or the side of the hill along down across all the grave sites. Why not take a long some wire and flags. Something like they mark utilities out with. Mark all the graves that you come across in an old cemetery. Turned around to take an awesome picture to see how many of them are. As you point out, graves are hard to pick up on the video and a picture. But with the marking the flags, looking back across the forest, you would be able to see your mark graves, quite obviously.
He and Cecil have done that before. Remember the vandalized Mahone Cemetery? They did it there.
I can't help wonder how grave sites like this have been destroyed very sad so many lives and stories about them lost to history

It would be interesting if a survey could be done with ground radar. Like what is done on Time Team episodes. To really get plot of the cemetery.
I watch genealogy shows. Most would love to know where their loves ones were. I wish they marked with the slave owners names so family of the slaves could at least come there, and stand on the ground near them.
Could the box tomb possibly be done later on after the death by a family member?

Millstadt IL has 2 parts of a black cemetery that are overgrown with weeds and trees and then a newer cemetery that is modern. Sunset Gardens of Memory Millstadt IL Lived next door to it for years. Up on top of a bluff overlooking St Louis MO.

The box tomb and the marked grave may be family members of the plantation owner.

Robert have you ever thought about placing wooden crosses on graves that don’t have any kind of marker on the graves that you find in cemeteries like this I just thought it would help people to see that a grave is in that spot so that they don’t walk all over them I just thought it would be nice to see a cross on the graves

I looked at the 1900 census for Ella and her husband Gus and they are living next to a white family with the same last name. Could they be their former owners? Alma Wimberly is listed as a land lord and I suspect they owned the farm where Ella and Gus lived as it shows they are renting.

Do any records for wimberley plantation exist that would give identity to those hurried in this cemetery or any kind of map showing plots where they were buried. You would think the land owner or overlord would have kept some death and burial records for the plantation for taxes on their slaves to prove death.

What happens if a company unknowingly unburies a cemetery and bodies are....what happens to the bodies?

Never walk over graves it people family resting place it just not right to do so
It's impossible not to, even in modern cemeteries. In a place like this, you can't see where it is unless there is an "indention"
That's what I was taught. I thankful they are still discovering grave sites.
