Part of me wishes the caber had a recharge bar or maybe a quota bar where in order to get a new caber you need to collect a certain amount from amo packs. Then it may be more viable.

Crouch, tho from what I understand you can't crouch mid charge, but you are free to do so once you start the swing animation. So you have to start your swing then look down and crouch

First, you need a crit from the Splendid Screen, which you get when swinging on the last 40% of the charge (the charge bar will go from green to yellow to red overtime)
Then understand that the caber has two parts: melee and explosion. Crit melee does 165 on one guy while Crit explosion does up to 225. The explosion originates from your character's centre rather than the hand for some reason. However since the explosion does less damage as it gets further away it becomes less likely to one-shot people. Soldiers, Heavies and Demoknights with shield resistance can oftentimes survive the raw explosion, so a dead on melee hit to add 165 on a single target is needed.
Oneshotting overhealed heavies by adding on a shield bash (85) is possible, but inconsistent
