Episode 1 sets up Dean as the macho, devil may care older brother who cares intensely about family, and ep 2 sets up that helping people is important to him, because that's what he got from what his father taught him. Ep 3 is the show's first real dig at the character beneath, showing that while Sam has disbelief at Dean "liking kids", he's actually a natural with them, and alludes to the deep trauma that Dean had as a child after seeing his mother die, which is why he could connect to Lucas. Somewhat spoilery, though not really?? In supplemental material, it is said that Dean went mute for a year after his mother's death, furthering his ability to empathize and treat with respect a child that went through something similar that he did. Hdhdhdhd sorry this comment is so long idk that episode is just kinda important to me ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Anyways keep up the great work!

One of the things you do find in these episodes is not just the monster of the week but also a lot of how these boys interact. It makes a difference later to pay a bit of attention to how they bounce junk off each other as well as support each other.
Cameron asked why some random demon would know about Sam, and about Jessica's death. When Sam mentioned it to Dean at the airport, Dean said that Demon's can read minds and will lie to mess with you. I'm loving you guys reactions. Can't wait for the next one. 💙

This episode was probably the first episode in Supernatural that actually scared me. Ironically, i watched this episode for the first time a couple days before I had to board an airplane to fly somewhere and I absolutely hate flying so watching that episode made my fear worse! Also, can I say Dean’s fear of flying is comical to me. Side note: Thanks for the fast reactions. Have a safe holiday and Merry Christmas.
You are right about the shout-outs from later seasons to earlier seasons. Some of the continuity is a little sketch, but overall - the SPN writers tried to have an internal logic to the show across seasons. I love that y'all are asking these questions. Eventually, you'll get it.
Fun fact:There's a part where the boys are walking with the guy who called them. He mentions some movie, Exorcist or something. Off camera someone hollers something about loving that movie. And guy the boys are with tells him to shut up. That part was not in the script. The director thought it was funny and left it in.
I'm definitely enjoying these reactions... Supernatural is one of my favorite shows and this is a cool way for me to revisit the show while enjoying other people's view on the same....

Season 1 was mostly known for what are called Urban Legends, stories that are circulated through generations, such as, what was heard in 1950s then in the 1970s would be somewhat different, then so on and so on but still be recognizable today. I recognize most of these stories but to me the stories of how or who differ than what I've heard. Don't give up guys it doesn't take long before you know where they're going.

when u look back after so many seasons, you can see how good season 1 is with solidifying their characterization. last ep with the lake ghost showed me a lot of things about dean's childhood altho it is very subtle. same as this episode too.
I agree! it's great at showing us Dean's hidden depths and sets up how good he is with children, which doesn't seem obvious with the kind of macho persona he's putting on, but really makes a lot of sense, seeing as he was the one who pretty much raised Sam. Part of the reason he's so protective of Sam is because he wasn't just the big bro for him, but rather a mix of a brother AND a mother. And I think we all know how difficult it is for parents sometimes to let you leave the nest, despite you being already in your 20's. 😅
It is impossible to open an airplane door in flight by the pressure difference. It's a bit like diving a mile under the water and trying to inflate a balloon.
If you combine how heavy the door on a plane is, the seal on it alone with the air pressure from outside of the plane, it would be nearly impossible for even the strongest human in the world to open it in midair/midflight. Great reaction. I was wondering where is our fourth friend at?

Lmao the plane door isn't heavy, it's that when you're flying the airplane has a different pressure inside than the wind & air outside of it, so the door is essentially vacuum sealed shut. So the pressure comes from air pressure and not the weight of the door. The amount of weight that pressure makes on the door is somewhere in the 20'000 lbs range.
