@jeremiahurban2457 no it didn't. I think you're confusing a birds nest with just an overrun. A birds nest starts to overlap and loop itself into a knot. Over run is slack in the spool you can either manually pull out or is automatically pulled out by the sinkers weight
So I’ve never really understood how these bigger conventional reels work. How does the line lay back properly on the spool without a line guide? Do you just guide it manually to keep from piling up?
You can use bait casters or spinning reels. It’s more about having a proper surf rod. Cast control makes it more efficient. Using your thumb is not as consistent as you would think. I think you’ll burn up you thumb with the spool speed you can generate with larger surf rods and more powerful casts.
@@castclubmike I wanted to try out surf casting specifically on conventional since I'm horrible at casting spinning reels. Most of the information I found did not go into detail about the reel specs, looking around there are some reels that does not even have cast control but was marketed as a surf cast reel and that confused me more. So what you're telling me is that it's even possible to surf cast using an Avet reel if I wanted to so long as I have a proper surf rod?
@@SketchbookGuitar yes avet work. They even make some with magnet control. A star drag will always cast better than a lever drag based on design. But a lever drag will do just fine. Lever drag have the drag washers on the spool. Star drag has drag washers in the frame allowing the spool to not have to carry extra unbalancing weight.
@@castclubmike Thank you that reduces my confusion by a lot. That’s not a birdsnest. This is called an over run. When the sinker gets past 100yards you can not see it anymore. We wait to see the first sign of fluff before stoping it to prevent from stoping it to early shortening your distance. The tangle you see at the end comes out on its own extremely easy.
@@jackson3389221 sorry bud two different things from a birds nest and an overrun. Birdsnest is tangled up line and an over run just lefts off a few extra loops of line at the end of a cast. They are definitely not the same thing.
This is for offshore or deeper water stuff regardless so that little “birds nest” that you wanna call it. (Over run is what it actually is) would get out on its own cuz it’ll be sinking one, and two it’s braid, heavy braid, so it’s the easiest thing in the world to untangle.

Yes you must guide it back on even and flat. It’s hard at first but you get used to it.
You can angle the rod a little left to right and guide the line that way as well.

Thanks!
Man gotta love the baitcasters. Way longer casting distance + accuracy. I know cause i got one lol
Waiting for the day someone make a hybrid baitcaster and spinning reel
it that braid? i heard it tends to backlash a lot, how do you do it??
Top is mono. Backing is braid.
😊
I’m personal experience braid backlashes way less depending on the brand cause it doesn’t retain memory in the line nearly as much as mono
@@Dcg860 not when you cast hard with huge powerful rods. Braid tends to dig itself into the spool causing you to break off.
@castclubmike having this issue now. You get a good cast then halfway in the lures coming back to where it came from
How do you prevent birds nest ? I can get these crazy long casts but it never works out always stops short cause the knot
What reel are you using and are you using braid?
I wish someone could tell me where I can find a rod for ground/pendulum casting/fishing, in Australia!
Gotta order from USA or UK. Century or Zziplex are the best. Veals or Gerry’s tackle in UK 🇬🇧 or hatteras jack in usa for century.
