- The Kinect ride started back in 2009 and lasted 5 years, forced all the way up to the next generation of consoles. A major reorganization of the Xbox team happened after the departure of Don Mattrick in 2013. Kinect is no longer advertised or bundled with the console. Today in 2016, Phil Spencer is still trying to recover the Xbox brand's image.

Because that stuffs boring to talk about, but it was used. My grandma fell and the rehab team used a kinect to track how her progress was coming along at the home. I saw them in schools as a competitor to smart boards.
They actually still use kinects today for real world applications. Nobody wanted to see that stuff in a gaming event, but yeah it was a legit thing

well they got paid for that so they are completely fine with it i guess. However, there are some people who actually paid for the kinect and never even used it. I mean probably 95% of the people who had it never used so who is feeling stupid now?
I’m honestly surprised Microsoft didn’t get more backlash with the Kinect, they straight up committed false advertising.
Chances are, every ad has a disclaimer like that at 0:25 (lower-middle) where they say that "depictions are purely visionary" or some shit.

@@OHHHHUSBANT Not necessarily, a pretty strong argument would be that the kinect was meant mainly for gaming (considering it was bundled with an xbox). Here in Australia, if it doesn't function for its main purpose, it can fall afoul of misleading/deceptive conduct laws. Really depends on how bad the Kinect was though, it doesn't seem like it was THAT terrible to contravene a trade law, just kinda bad.
The only thing Kinect is actually good at is finding shadow people that live in your house.

I have fond memories of the kinect, one time i was playing some 2d fighting game(can’t remember the name) and my dog stepped in front of the screen, the kinect picked him up and he appeared in the game, his body dealt damage to the enemies which made my family and I burst out in laughter

I remember I had the Kinect and it was kinda cool - I basically thought of it as Xbox's Wii but I think it came too early, no one really knew what to do with the thing. I think if it came out today it could be an interesting thing.

It won't work. I've played the violin for quite some time and I can tell you air violin is just for fun and absolutely worthless if you're trying to make progress. Even a desk is better than air if you're practicing vibrato.

I don't think the kinect was a problem itself, but rather how they overhyped it making it seem like it was the best thing ever.
I think if they had just announced it off without hyping it so much and treated it as a secondary objective during gaming development, that people would have liked it more and given it time to improve over years come at the time.

Buddy, welcome to the world of marketing. Businesses make money of Advertising and Announcing something making people buy your product is the key and they did a great job with it, microsoft was smart with the marketing stragety.
I do agree with part of what you're saying; they did overemphasize the "game-changing" nature and practicality of it. But there was also the issue of them trying to shoehorn it into so many features, throwaway titles, and franchises that its cons and defects became far more emphasized then it ever would be if it was just a gimmicky addon. How many of these major IPs (Mass Effect, Ghost Recon, Forza, etc.) were actually excited and waiting implement something of that kind into their games, verses being heavily encouraged (either monetarily, promotionally, or otherwise) by Microsoft to find a way of pushing the product?
And to top it off, it wasn't very good on the grander scheme. It had some charming and fun moments to it (if you didn't look too deeply into it), but anything relating to an "immersive" experience was either highly dysfunctional or just 50 percent playing itself.

And it can’t detect little jogging so it makes you literally use all of your energy making your knees touch your chest as fast you can so you can just run.
it is super advanced and could very well do that, but you need a computer and custom software for it, i hacked mine to detect my movement in vr, and it works better than a vive tracker, it is super precise

well duh I remember having it and besides it being a fun little novelty I got bored of it and went back to the controller even for watching movies on my xbox after about that much time maybe less.
I don't think the issue was the concept itself, the problem was the games, if Kinect supported Third Party games with VR capabilities it would be awesome, it's the perfect technology for it.

I owned a Kinect with the 360 and it was pretty cool with the few basic games it came with. From what I've heard now, Kinect is actually a really cheap way to get into motion capture with Python and such.

Lol, just bought an old Xbox 360 Kinect with like 30 games for my 6 year old. Kinect Sports (bowling, mini games, etc.,) and adventures is awesome. He absolutely loves it.

I remember I was playing Borderlands 2 with a friend online and he had a few other friends over. Kept trying to get Vermivorous to summon (very low chance of happening). Finally did it and were fighting, boss was nearly dead. One of our other friends starts saying “Xbox off” over and over, friend disconnects.
He managed to get the kinect to turn off the Xbox right before we killed the boss that took us nearly an hour to spawn

kinect came out in 2010. There were already a lot of webcams in people's homes by then.
Ironically, the only reason my parents would let me have a video game console when I was 9, was because the Kinect would allow me to be active while playing.
Microsoft forgot the Xbox was a video game console and they tried to make it into an "everything box" while still trying to convince people it was a video game console.

i will say this: i have used sample apps for the windows kinect sdk, and it is honestly very surprising what the kinect can do. there are even examples of gestures that would only be implemented on the xbox one, all using a 360 kinect. so i’d say that the camera itself was very impressive. i think the main thing was that developers for the 360 tried to use it in ways it wasn’t designed to do. and then of course the xbox one kinect came around, bundled with the console, and no one wanted it.
Exactly. You break into one and there's tons of cool stuff that works. It's better if you can do some software work to one but stock hooking one to a PC is pretty cool if you like playing with electronics

We had so much fun in our house with the Kinect for years. I was even surprised when I started hearing that it was a flop. Everyone in our house loved playing with it. It was seriously the most fun I’ve ever had playing video games with a group of people. I think the mistake was Microsoft set the expectations way too high.

Bro same Kinect was cool as fuck, I played Kinect adventures with my sisters and parents, that blue puppet cowboy guy, a superhero game with cool ass fights, and a mediocre harry Potter game.
I also think that Kinect was good for people who weren't really watching the announcements etc about it.

i had a kinect when i was 9, kinect sports and adventures was a hit whenever i had friends over. as i got older i got into dead rising and minecraft. much love for the xbox bc of this even in my adult years. still an avid xbox user. all bc my mom thought the kinect might be fun. idk. it worked 🤷🏼♀️

Televised Water Polo Honestly I think PlayStation is equally as bad, plus their community is filled with toxic 30 year olds and 6 year olds making a sour combination. Although it has nothing to do with mg argument I grew up with PlayStation, had an Xbox 360(and currently have a One) as well as built a PC this year.

The one cool thing about Kinect is that it can be used in engineering things. I've seen companies use them to help instruct employees what parts to assemble on and assembly line as well as the channel "Stuff Made Here" has used it before.

@@danielhayes3607 , it actually performs depth mapping by an infrared grid projection and calculating depth by distortion. The visible camera is only a portion of it. Though, these days LiDAR has become cheap enough, that may be the go to.
We used it in college to make a 3D model for a car we were racing and 3D printed the model to be tested in a wind tunnel before and after we made mods.
