How to Get a Retention Offer on Your Amex Platinum Card
Today I’m diving into the world of credit card retention offers, specifically focusing on the American Express Platinum Card. If you're considering whether to keep or cancel your Amex Platinum Card, this video is for you.
Retention offers are incentives provided by credit card issuers to encourage you to keep your card open and pay the annual fee for another year. These retention offers can come in the form of bonus points, statement credits, or even a reduction or waiver of the annual fee. They may also have a spend requirement to earn them.
One of the biggest benefits of credit card retention offers is that they can enhance the overall value you get from your card without any negative impact on your credit score. Unlike applying for a new credit card, requesting a retention offer doesn't involve a hard inquiry on your credit report. They also don’t require opening a new card account. This means you can explore these opportunities without worrying about a drop in your credit score.
I’ll also guide you step-by-step on how to request a retention offer from American Express. You'll learn how to contact customer service and what to say during your conversation.
By the end of this video, you'll be equipped with all the knowledge and confidence you need to secure a valuable retention offer on your Amex Platinum Card (and other credit cards, too)!

I got the 35k points for $4k spend in 3 months offer, then the following week my AC unit had to be replaced. So at least I achieved that spend fast!

P2 has both Platinum personal and business. The AF hits on November, but called and asked to downgrade the personal Platinum and was offered 50k MRs for $4k spent in 3 months which is easy for us. may be because the AF isn't due yet.

funny im 0 for 3 with retention offers and give them 6 figure spend each year. I will be cancelling 5 of 7 card over the next rolling 12 months starting this week.

I spent a lot with that card and reached the conclusion that they don’t value the spend. I had kept the card, despite 1X on most spend, because I got that value back on retention offered. I considered that a quid pro quo. Once they didn’t, I flushed the card.

The card I really want is the Amex Business Plat, there's an offer for 250K points. But man it requires $20K spend in 3 months. ☠ I can't meet that sort of spend lol

Thanks for the tips. I'll try for a retention offer on my Platinum card soon. Amex changed the rules within months of my getting the Platinum, my first Amex card, so now I can't get SUBs on lesser Amex cards. Grrrr. A decent retention offer would help a little. I'd like to keep the card for lounge access.

Great video as always. Your experience only reinforces my belief that AMEX is trying to avoid giving retention offers as I am sure more and more people are trying to get them since the increased annual fee. I have not received a retention offer in 2 years. The only thing offered to me 3 years ago was a bump in the value of my points when using them to pay my annual fee which I declined. I feel like they are not offering me a points bonus for spend because based off my annual spend it would be too easy? Have you or anyone else seen any data points out there to support this theory?

I was able to upgrade my gold card to a platinum card with a 50k bonus offer after spending 2k witching 6 months just over the weekend. I will be getting my new card this week as I had to get some dental work done where I will hit my spending mark. When I got my gold. Card I did get a 90k offer originally. So I still have that plus what I will get from the new offer with the new card

5% on Groceries - may be live online application the way you always do if you feel like getting it?

It could...or it could not. It's not a matter of if Card XYZ has offers, it's a matter of if your individual account is targeted for one. The only way to know is to contact Amex and ask.

Awesome video and great info. I have a Amex BPC and my annual fee is coming up next month and im really debating to downgrade the card because im running most transactions through my Hilton card. I've had the BPC for 11 months, will Amex frown apon me for doing the downgrade to the no AF card? TIA. Cheers!
