Thanks Amber! I was planning to purchase a basic Brother sewing machine but it sold out. The 1850 is more complex, but I got it for a great price. The last project I sewed was 12 years ago on a very old manual Husqvarna. I'm excited to have so many stitch options and multiple foot attachments. Thanks for the encouragement to try new things!
Beginner sewer here! I was on the fence about this machine and half way through your video, I paused it, jumped on amazon and bought it immediately😅. It will be here in 2 days and I am stoked to learn on this! Thank you!
I'm on my 2nd brother HC1850. It is a work horse. The first one lasted over 4 years and was sewn on almost daily. It pieced and quilted numerous quilts. Its a great free motion quilt machine. The only draw back is the small throat area however, I have quilted a king size quilt on it. I give it 5 stars - its the best!!!! Fyi: The first one is still going, I gave it to my grand daughters to sew on.
Since ur on ur 2nd machine.. I just bought one and it was used. I have been having issues with the need hitting the plate. I'm not sure what to do. Have you ever had these issues? I have been sewing for years and been able to figure this type of stuff out but it's really giving me issues! Don't know if u have and suggestions! Ty!
@@Nursie I've never had that happen. The only thing I can think of is you may have the wrong foot on for the stitch you've selected. Do you have the correct needles also? Can you send me a picture of your machine while on? deloresrast@yahoo.com
You are doing really good especially for only been seeing for 4 months. The box store machine are not made to last very long like the ones from a dealer. You might consider buying one from a dealer next time and maybe get a combination sewing/embroidery machine. Just make sure you buy one that has at least a 5x7 hoop. Dealers usually give free lessons when you purchase a machine from them also. I have seen on most brands and I think you get more for your money with a Brother machine. They are the easiest to us, the manuals are easy to understand and they are the easiest on maintenance. Good luck to you.
Thank you for the advice Barbara. I do have my eyes on a Pfaff Creative model and have been in contact with my local dealer about purchasing it in the future. I am very excited to eventually move forward with it!
Zoe,,, did it take very long for shipping? ,, I just ordered this from amazon with free shipping, it says it will b here Sunday ,, I hope it comes on that day,, thxs
So today I decided to buy a sewing machine... thank goodness I saw this video before I bought one!!! I had no idea about the bobbins, needles, stitches, etc. I thought all machines were all the same and just stitched stuff together 😳 Who knew it was soooooooooo complicated.!!??? You sold me on the ease of use on this one!` thank you 😊
I just ordered this machine. I am excited to start working with it. I am more of an intermediate sewer. I loved your review. I love the case you showed at the end. Going to pick one up to go with my machine.
great review. I just started myself last year by making some face masks but on a Singer. Now, I want to do more, I had a Brother GX 37, it was good, but I want to do some quilting and monogram, etc. I was looking at the SQ9285 sold out, so this was looks similar, so I will be purchasing this one. you did a good job, and I agree a cover should be standard. for sewing machines. you have a new subscriber.
I have that machine as well and although mine came with a cheap looking plastic dust cover, it did not come with a zipper presser foot, which was disappointing because I thought that would be one of the standard feet included. However, since I also have 2 Brother SE-425 models, I just used the zipper foot from one of those machines.
Your honesty is endearing...thank you for this review! Considering this machine as an upgrade for our 10 year old daughter. She needs something that can handle thicker fabrics. How was it at handling the thicker fabrics?
This particular machine is not an embroidery machine, however I do have a Pfaff embroidery machine and yes, it has a similar foot to the brother spring quilting foot which is used for embroidery. If you were looking to do a satin stitch border on an appliqué or something I would recommend using the “N” foot on the brother.
Very good review and thank you for you honestly and down to earth approach. My only question after viewing your review is, how does this machine handle heavy duty seams??? For instance, denim jean hemming?
Thanks so much! You helped me decide on this machine. I'm a BRAND NEW sewer too and the mchn seemed a bit intimidating. Let us know if you ever buy an embroidery machine too. - Thanks : )
Thank you for your wonderful review. I may be getting back to you as I myself purchased this same machine a year ago, but have not used it yet. I do intend to use it to make a simple quilt, of which I have made only one of those in my life, but it was over 30 years ago. Do you happen to know if I could receive another instructional video from Brother that you said came with the machine? There may have been one, but I have moved and am not sure if it got packed somewhere else or even if I ever got one. Thank you again so much for your TH-cam video.
Thank you for sharing! My 1850 came with a black cover that I use for dust cover! Do you have any videos on how to embroider for beginners or can you recommend one!
I just got this machine and the LED light is terrible! I can't see anything without back-up lighting. My 40 year old Kenmore machine didn't have this issue... Is this an issue with MY machine or is this something that no one mentions?
hi, I learn to make swimwear but I have a singer machine make confunse over make so tired to fix it,, ill needed to buy machine brother hc1850, but thank you for showing videos
Please guide me about its speed I have janome sensor craft 7000 I feel that is slow comparing to old black type household machines Waiting for ur response for a decision
I have never used a Janome but I have always been happy with the speed of my Brother and like the fact I can use the speed adjuster to make sure it goes slow on my detailed work.
i'm trying to locate one of these machines in this pandemic time that is not overpriced. Do you know of any? Also, is this is this machine able to hem material such as denim jeans?
There are lots of Brother machines that are similar to this one. I noticed it is no longer listed on Amazon but others are. I de believed this can hem jeans given it got through the thick pleating of my masks.
This one cheaper than janome 3160QOV and it feel similar functions. The dealer around my area only carry Janome 3160 ($600) and they will help train me how to use it, should i buy this Brother half price cheaper and learn it myself on youtube?
Honestly yes, I would go with the cheaper Brother. Sewing machines are not as difficult to learn as most people think, and there are tons of easy to follow tutorials that cover basic use to regular maintenance of your machine. I highly recommend Made To Sew’s Beginner Sewing Course. She covers everything you need to know about sewing. The basics she teaches apply to all machines. From there you can search for specifics if you run into to trouble, but I feel that is unlikely. I now have a Pfaff CS Pro II embroidery machine, and that IS something you would want to buy from a dealer that will teach you how to use it, but for a standard sewing machine TH-cam is more than sufficient.
Hi there, How much you paid for the machine in Jan, was it $185 included S&H ? Does one needle supposed to be in the machine with the new machine ? Thanks
I’ve done it a few times with no issues, but if you plan to buy this to sew thick denim and leather exclusively I would buy a different machine made for that kind of work.
No, this is not an embroidery machine. It has pre programed letters for monogramming and lots of decorative stitches, but there is no embroidery unit/hoops to embroider designs.
I love your honesty about you being new; I am too, and I'm terrified! I will look for your "how to use" videos. Thanks!

Even Feed Walking Presser Foot, is it compatible with the CH-1850 Computerized Sewing and Quilting Machine?
I am not sure. I have never used one before.
Thank you so much 😊
would love to start sewing, just afraid. I need something to pass time on my down time but also something that I can use. help
Thank you for sharing! My 1850 came with a black cover that I use for dust cover! Do you have any videos on how to embroider for beginners or can you recommend one!
Help me my brother sewing mechine 1850 is sewing backwards
Would you please provide me with Hobby Lobby craft box information ? Thanks
I want to buy one to make purses will this sew clear vinyl?? Plz let me know asap thank you 😊
I haven’t seen vinyl with this but it will handle it fine. I suggest using a denim or leather needle when sewing vinyl.
@@AmbertheStitchWitch ah great . Does the machine come with those type of needles

Is this machine for embroidery too?
The Brother HC1850 is not an embroidery machine, however it does have 55 alphanumeric stitches built in.
Looking for your monogramming videos?
I never made them since not long after this video I upgraded to an embroidery machine
so it doesn’t do embroidery??
