This guy came up to my Brazilian/Maori friend (he had friends about 50ft away too) about 10 years ago. My friend was waxing his board and sitting on the sand with a shirt on. You could tell by this dudes fast walking and energy he was going to say or make trouble. So my friend nodded what's up, stood and took off his shirt. Hah!!! this dude stopped in his tracks about 5 ft away. He saw my friends Gracie bulldog tattoo and Maori tats all over from NZ and started making conversation about them. Without a problem my friend said peace and got in the water. Im sure it doesn't hurt my friends about 6'2 and has jacked up grappling ears but the point is this dude knows who to fuck with and who not to.

Surfing in Hawaii has been long before I was ever born, the locals made Waimea famous and Kala came generations later.
Kala has gotten away with murder, recently. He gets away with everything, and beats up people who he does not like.
"The ocean is free" except for non locals! Lol
The guy brings up "respect" in every single conversation. Respect has gotta be earned. You don't get it just from growing up somewhere and harassing everyone who bothers you.

Respect for your training and water skills, combine that will a helpful attitude and leave that wolf pack shit behind. Then you may become a Island legend, train your emotional responses.

This guy is the reason I get so nervous about surfing in Hawaii. He gives makes the Hawaiian surf scene a bed rep for sure, which is sad because most people I meet out there are extremely friendly. It's not like I'd be a dick out in the lineup if it weren't for this guy... Then again I don't sure pipe...

not long i watched a video here about his incident with the Brazilian surfer ...didnt he like run into him and knocked the guy out, and left him floating im the water to die? i think its claimed to be an accident but many have said this is the norm with him ...sadly i think the guy is still in a coma ...that is horrible. Nobody seems to mention it here

It was not that many generations ago that Hawaiians had a very different life.
Ultimately a tortured soul who is as committed to bad behavior as he is to wanting to be a good person. He might have let go of some of that ego which plagued him during the several years I go to know and hang with him. He deserves credit for persevering through some extremely difficult emotional situations which shaped him. As he knows, he did some actions which were degrading to others and himself. He has the capability of rising to a higher level morally but it would require significant therapy which is not readily available in his world. But the video depicts the hard work and diverse athletic abilities. Remember, this guy is mid forties and can perform in some ways at the level of a 25 year old. On the other hand, his mind reacts to things like a teenager who has no sense of consequences. I wonder how he feels about Brock's passing. he does not seem to have put anything out there.
You're talking about changing his personality. People can change their behavior, but they can't change who they are. Maybe anger management and behavior mod training would help him become more self aware. They say agression is self hate turned outward. Lots of our parents taught us to hate ourselves, but at some point ya gotta grow up and stop being the person your parents conditioned you to be. And that takes intelligence, to recognize that who you are, is what they made you into. A lot of aggressive people just don't see that.
I understand that to GET respect, you have to FIRST give it out.
But, what I will never understand is why certain people always rely on their fists to "do the talking".
That gets no one anywhere -- punching people out, and seeming to "get the haole kooks" back.
Doing that is just vengeful, and full of hate not aloha.

in the break line up. Never said a word, couldn't do anything but go straight down the face, dropped in all the time without looking left or right,
but no one ever said a word or yelled. Man, he was scary looking. I can chuckle about it now. Wherever he is, I hope he took up badminton or something.

He's so shameless. Real locals don't treat tourists badly and his other story said he demands respect. Don't ever respect someone who is violent like he is. He doesn't own the North Shore and can be blamed for hurting Hawaii's reputation.

It's simple: Just be courteous, say "Hi", "Aloha" and give respect to the locals. It's just that simple. GIVE, first, in order to get back. But, DON'T give just thinking that you'll get back, either. GIVE selflessly, NOT selfishly.
And be aware of the reason non locals are looked at the way they are

Running with rocks underwater is fucking nuts..but fun as hell cause I'm always trying to push myself to stay in longer. Do it when you have people holding on to you..hilarity will ensue. But a lil more difficult because you trying so hard not to laugh and let go of the rock.

From what i learned, hawaii was once a independent kingdom before us marines overthrew the queen and forced her to abdicate her power to the us.
I'm not saying that kala is a good guy or that americans should get off the islands.
Its just that I have a friend who lives in hawaii who've lived in boston before and he says that the locals are actually really kind, its just the small few who make a bad names for hawaiians.
That is my small experience as well. As far as I can tell, the respect you give is the respect you get.

You "learned" false information. Download from Google Books the free PDF of the book "History of Later Years of the Hawaiian Monarchy", published in Honolulu in 1896. In 1893, the queen violated the constitution by trying to force a new one without going through the legal process. Hawaii citizens revolted and took over, not US marines. US President Cleveland tried to restore the queen, but failed. She offered abdication in 1895, but it was moot.
The author of that book was W.D. Alexander, one of the most highly respected members of the Hawaiian monarchy government. He was later the President of the Punahou Schools. NOTE that Kala's last name is ALEXANDER. Is he a descendant of W.D. Alexander? How come he didn't reveal his ancestry in the video? Don't feel sorry for the queen. Cleveland gave up on her because she wanted to BEHEAD the citizens who took over.

At least the Homeboy knows that for the supposed Shit Talking he does he has to get in the gym and work towards backing his shit up. The guy looks like he weighs between 145-155 lbs; that is super light and super wiry. You would preferably want to be built like Kimbo Slice for the streets because its like a box of chocolates and you just don't know what you're going to get. Like Charlie; Kimbo don't surf and Homeboy is ideally built for it. On the streets a light wiry guy with a decent fighting background and monumental conditioning can seemingly hold his own but like all things it remains to be seen.
Not much more of a hate-able face and personality out there....than this guy brings. Poorest excuse of an ambassador or spokesman for Hawaii... I’ll be the first to say though don’t know him ....so I could be grossly off with my assessment ?
I don't know him either but the videos of him punching people in the face strongly indicate that your assessment is correct.
