@My Mate Vince the burning was caused by water damage when we get leaks in properties we sometimes get carbon trails caused when electricity flows through water using the cabon as the conductor (path of least resistance)and shorts and then is allowed to dry leaving behind the carbon. The water gets in through the base, the air draws in from the sides but also causes air to be drawn in from the bottom, the same way the top part works air around the edge draws air through the middle. Guessing someone moped a bit to much lol.

In order to prevent the circuit breaker to blow, you can put an incandescent bulb in series with the load. In case of a short circuit, the bulb will switch on brightly. Otherwise it might just light up very dimly. Do not use your variac transformer without propper protection. A short-circuit can draw enough current to melt the thin wire in your variac. What you can do to test Mains voltage equipment is to connect a 60W filament bulb in line with the live cable and if it's ok the lamp with hardly glow but if the unit has a fault instead of it going bang and maybe damaging anything else on the board the lamp will just light and not damage anything else. I have a TV remote for one of my old TVs, the remote works just enough to make the LED turn on, but, it doesn't work enough to tell the TV what to do.
One of my old managers told me ‘when you can’t you must’ so get on there and do the Telly work. You’ll be brilliant. You pretty much do it now on your car vids. Think of all the new subscribers!!
Cat pee is incredibly conductive. So you are correct that it has been sparking for a while, then the carbonization between the two terminals for the AC line input, tracked and shorted. Strange the plug fuse didn't blow though...
Vince another feature of that fan I think is you can tilt the fan backwards a little bit to aim the cool breeze higher. I think you just tilt the curved part the air comes out of from the round base it sits on.
glad to hear the good news for youtube 2023! Mind sharing who the sponsor is? I honestly think you have a great voice for TV - might really be worth considering! Excited about the defibrillator you spoilered ;)
Great video Vince as usual. I've only been watching a few months but binge most days. I like to try and fix things and have learnt so much from you and gained confidence. Thanks so much and Merry Christmas to you
You should really get yourself a light bulb to act as a current limiter!! So simple but yet so effective. You simply wire a 60W filament light bulb inline with the live between the mains and the questionable item, (have one set up with a mains plug, light socket and mains socket you can plug in any time you need to test something) if there is a short the bulb then just lights up instead of things blowing up and tripping the power or damaging your variac etc!
congrats Vince on all the good news... the sponsorship and the TV deal (I have my fingers crossed for you). hopefully I will get to see it and I'm sure your will do amazingly. well deserved.
Hi Vince, testing AC stuff, I would highly recommend a variac and or a simple current limiter. A simple current limiter can be made with a 100w light bulb (or any high power resistive load) in series with your D.U.T (Device Under Test) Mr Carlson's Lab has a very nice one. This would save breaker trips, blown fuses and potentially more damage to the D.U.T.
Vince, you need a light bulb in series with the stuff you plug in. The light bulb will go full bright if the item you are trying to repair is shorted. It's really helpful, and safer than feeding the item with full mains voltage.
Sitting here 1am watching whilst finishing up my Seiko 4R35 custom Tuna I bought for £50, just finished polishing the insides of the sapphire crystals on front and back, final dab of rodico on the now spotless dial, inserted the stem in with a freshly loctited crown and button'd up and thing is like brand new :) Yesterday using conductive paint and conductive epoxy I brought back from the leaked battery dead a National Semiconductor LCD watch, had to redraw half the circuit board and repair several solder joints but new battery in and working like new... all this was drawn on the inspiration of your very early watch video and the video's that followed teaching this old dog new tricks indeed :)
Amazing video! Nice job with the repair and good luck with your sponsorship and some more great videos in 2023, and have a great Christmas and Happy New Year!!
Definitely cat wee - seen that before and it's difficult to get rid of the damage made by the arcing - but you did a great job! Strangely conductive stuff!
nice repair and it looks like everything is on the up for you in 2023 I hope next year is the same for me after bad medical news this year also the reason you can see the remote working on your phone is because your phone camera doesn't have a IR filter or something I think but some phones do have the filter on the camera so I guess your main camera has the filter so you cant see the light from the remote
Love your streams. For shorts, you should really use a "Megger" (Insulation/Resitance) tester, which is the correct instrument. Not just multimeter on the Resitance setting.
Have to say I was expecting a smoke emitting device rather than carbonisation - good catch. That darn cat ! I had a computer fail because of Act Of Cat. My fault for leaving the case off while fixing it, and not checking the cat wasn't hiding in the computer room. I let the cat out next day, noticed little yellow needle-shaped crystals on the floor of the case, cleaned up the pee, and carried on. About 6 months later the motherboard failed, and I noticed a lot of corroded tracks in the bottom corner. Sadly BER and replaced the MB. Well done.
26:13 the reason why you don't see it on your main camera is because they usually have an infrared filter in the lens now smartphones also have it but it isn't quite as aggressive thus some infrared is still able to pass through.
The first thing you should have done before plugging it in is a low ohms check, although you did from the plug ,or use a variac, and wind the voltage up slowly, and If you see a high current demand at low voltage there be a short 😉
If it had have been in Australia I would have said the fault was caused by a cockroach. Those things kill more dishwashers, coffee machines, microwaves and ovens than just about anything else over here. All you find is a big black scorch mark and a bunch of random legs. Nice work mate.
Congratulations on all the good news you deserve it as I know how much time is involved in producing content that is the quality yours is, side note that fan repair is as good as new and I would have no worries using it in my home you will have no issues with safety 👍
I honestly thought that once the board was out and cleaned up that you were going to dissappear and return wearing a Hazmat suite, full face mask and ear defenders. Then connect it up and switch it on to see just were it was sparking from. 🤣🤣🤣
Great video Vince, loved seeing you playing about those live wires. I can see you use "Head & Shoulders" so go for the T.V. roll. Perhaps you could be on the "Repair Shop" as a guest appearance! On a serious note. Playing about with electrical pieces of equipment without knowing fully as to what you're doing is perhaps something the T.V. companies wouldn't want to get involved with. But mending electronic toys and games etc. could be something they might go for. As others have said well deserved Vince. Now, go get them 'Japanese Pliers' I told you about.
Well done Vince ... you are clearly learning a lot from ElectroBoom 😀. And as for TV work, really try to find out what they are looking for as well as ‘the angle’ they are approaching it. I think your natural enthusiasm would shine through. Best of luck and have a great Xmas!
I am watching Vince now for a longer time and because of him, I have become interested in repairing stuff especially electronics as well, also with success. I really learned from Vince and then also bought some books as an addition. But while this is not just a very interesting and informative channel it is also real entertainment. Where else do you find a guy who is blowing his home fusebox and is happy about it because the eBay description is correct? And telling you that he will have to change his trousers after the bang? 😂
Last time I saw a board and case look like that was when I miswired an NL2 connector from AC power with hot to ground (long story). Shot 110v across the board so none of the fuses tripped and tripped every breaker I plugged it into.
Hall effect sensors are there to tell what position the motor is in and then it sends voltage in a circular motion and shuts off coils not needed really fast for fans is how I understand it and they can also power coils simultaneously in pairs or separately depending on the operation needed
This fella is proof you don't have to score 98% in Advanced Circuit Analysis to repair consumer electronics. I don't remember hearing "Follow the flame," in that class but I tend to nap during lecture so I could have missed it.
Sounds like 2023 is gonna be an awesome year for you vince,no better person for it to happen to,another brilliant year of videos, thanks for keeping us all entertained,Merry Christmas to you and all the family mate
Also on the safety side of things Vince, if a 100w fan turns up with a 13A fuse in the plug (like the last one)..change it for something sensible like 1A or 3A. 13x240= 3.1kW. A fan doesn't need that.
Where the 2 active + neutral are soldered to the board, the terminals as you said have 2 pins each that are soldered to the board and the liquid would have shorted the soldered pads right on the edge of the board and the copper pads that the edge pins are soldered to have been vaporised and sprayed all over the plastic housing.

Class video yet again Vince. Cracking buy and fix. Summer 23 will be a breeze 😅
Tip from Eddie over at Kiss Analog. Use an upside down tupperware container as a blast shield if you are worried about exploding components.
Happy to hear about the sponsorship! Wonder if it's ifixit, lol. Great fix and great video. Keep it up!
Cat pee is incredibly conductive. So you are correct that it has been sparking for a while, then the carbonization between the two terminals for the AC line input, tracked and shorted.
Strange the plug fuse didn't blow though...
Very unusual condition. Great fix.
Vince so great to hear the positive news and your hard work is being noticed. I always enjoy your content no matter what you are fixing.
Awesome to see this working properly again! Good luck on the potential television offer! I am looking forward to more videos!
Wow! Vince.. Wasn't expecting it to be such a big bang!
Great video 👍
It's really helpful, and safer than feeding the item with full mains voltage.
and it also prevents further damage
Been watching pretty much from day 1 sounds like exciting times ahead totally well deserved & well done!
Congrats on your sponsorship! Well deserved. 🎉
Amazing i would never of thought it could be saved looking at the damage first off for the uninitiated that would of gone into landfill
Well done.
26:13 the reason why you don't see it on your main camera is because they usually have an infrared filter in the lens
now smartphones also have it but it isn't quite as aggressive thus some infrared is still able to pass through.
The first thing you should have done before plugging it in is a low ohms check, although you did from the plug ,or use a variac, and wind the voltage up slowly, and If you see a high current demand at low voltage there be a short 😉
Congrats on the sponsorship and with the TV offer see if you can just to behind the lens stuff 🤙
Me and the wife love watching Vince, we take non monetary bets whether it will be a fix or not
If it had have been in Australia I would have said the fault was caused by a cockroach.
Wow! What a bang! Very nice fix.
I honestly thought that once the board was out and cleaned up that you were going to dissappear and return wearing a Hazmat suite, full face mask and ear defenders. Then connect it up and switch it on to see just were it was sparking from. 🤣🤣🤣
To disconnect the oscillation arm there is a black cover on the bottom to gain easy access to disconnect it with 2 screws.
Thanks for that, I put clean underpants on this morning, now I have to change them again after that BANG 😅
Well done….very well done and good luck with your future ventures 👏👏
another awesome repair i look forward to seeing you on TV Vince
I agree with you. That's some type of Liquid got spilled in it.
Oha, telly stuff?
Sounds awesome 👍
Also on the safety side of things Vince, if a 100w fan turns up with a 13A fuse in the plug (like the last one)..change it for something sensible like 1A or 3A.
13x240= 3.1kW. A fan doesn't need that.
That's great news, Vince! Nice one!
Go for it m8 think you would be a natrual , certainly make me smile when i watch your vids best of luck luck with all you decide to do .
Excellent bit of forensics
Congrats on the repair…and yeah, that’s probably Cat spray. My cat did it to our skybox when I was a kid. Stank and blew up. Lol
Vince, thank you for the interesting new video. Great job!
Dude go for it . Make it while you can . Thanks for the interesting videos .
