I remember watching the movie The Counselor with Michael Fassbinder. There was a bit where they talked about the cartel killing someone and then having sex with their corpse, and then sending video of it to a loved one.
No WAY the cartel would do that.
They would straight up rape and torture the person ALIVE, while filming it, kill them, and THEN send the video.
And we never. learn.

It certainly is. The TJ - San Diego and El Paso Juarez borders will always be like this. Bc they are super busy crossings the cartel can send 50 car loads knowing 5 to 10 will get busted but the other 40 plus will get through. For those caught the money will go to their family.
I live in south Texas about 18 miles from Mexico. There is so much complexities involved. Not what one hears from politicians, the media or even government.

Whenever I lived in South Texas, I was always nice to everyone. You never know who has a cousin in the Cartel.

This movie's Score is mesmerizing. It's haunting.
Also, the Juarez - El Paso border and the Tijuana - San Diego border are the 2 most dangerous spots along the border. This is bc it's the only 2 spots with decent size cities on either side. Bc these border crossings are so swamped it makes it easier to slip things through. Cartels will send 50 mule cars carrying their load across knowing that 5 to 10 of them are going to get caught but 40 plus will get through. It's a simple numbers game and if those mules are caught and arrested their pay will go to their family. That is why control over these territories is so important and are fought over so violently.
Alejandro used to work for the Medellin cartel in Colombia, so he's shady af even though he worked as a prosecutor at one point. Kate is a by the book kinda gal, so she's very frustrated by all the rule bending. That's why she tries to arrest Alejandro at the end of the tunnel on the Mexico side and why she doesn't want to sign the paperwork in the end.
I feel like its deeper than that, its about a internal struggle identifying right from wrong, which was easy in her last job. But know her whole worldview has been destroyed and left where she cannot decide how to live.
He went to work for the colombians after they killed his family because they were enemies of the cartel that killed his family and he knew they would help him get to them. He wasn't shady when he was a prosecutor.
The thing about shady people is that they're usually exactly who you need in the shady parts of the world. When you're somewhere that everything is shades of grey, a black and white person typically sticks out like a sore thumb.
i mean also she could lose her career or even be sent to prison if the operation ever came under scrutiny by congress or something, and something illegal or improper were found. the whole thing was paid for by taxpayer dollars right? so what would it look like if it came out in the news or something that the CIA used a colombian hitman to manipulate the drug trade in mexico? (and killed people on US soil.. which yes, is supposed to be VERY illegal. probably happens a lot though). but there's her signature basically lying saying it was all above board.. so it gets hung on her neck. it's more politics at that level than anything.. but politics can definitely land someone like her in jail if they need a scapegoat
@@swish007 very good point! did not realize that aspect of the whole situation. you get so wrapped up in the nature of the story that you forget where the actual lines are and what these people would have to respond to. Like when the FBI section chief say "the line has been moved", that only refers to a private line, in public all of those lines are still in place. If this were to break they would have to have a scapegoat or cover up. Adds another interesting element, what we are willing to do when "no-one" is watching is different from our ideal/public morals and actions. Great comment! This is one of my favorites so getting another perspective is cool!
The reason Alejandro needed her was because the CIA isn’t allowed to operate anywhere without another department attached to the operation which is why they needed the girl. The girl knows that they’re breaking all the laws that they’re killing anybody they want to get the mission complete and wants iT to end. She doesn’t want to sign the paper at the end, because she knows everything will be swept under the rug and forgotten about.
Governments do so much shit their citizens will never know about it isn’t funny.

We used to go to Juarez to party because they would let you in if you were underage. But after the time I saw someone got a bottle broken over their face and then my friend got robbed by cops I decided to nope that situation.

I’m from a town (Yuma, AZ) on the Us/Mexico border. Years ago, my friends and I were out off roading in the desert and came across a tunnel. Ten of my friends were marines and we were also out there to go shooting, so we were armed. A few of the marines went to check out the tunnel. It was scary. Thankfully, they didn’t go far, and it was uneventful.
Epic movie, the second one is pretty damn good too. I have a friend I work with that tells me stories of the stuff he and his family went through when dealing with the cartels it’s so much worse that even this movie portrays.
Fun fact: The military SOF elements in the movie are Combat Applications Group (CAG) AKA "Delta Force". If you read the book, 'Inside Delta Force", the model was based on the British Special Air Service (SAS), which runs worldwide operations with absolutely savage efficiency. Take these big meat eaters, slap a Brit and Scot accent on them, and you have yourself the SAS. In Iraq, during the invasion and against ISIS, the Tier 1 units of CAG, DEVGRU (SEAL Team 6), and the UK SAS ran operations that put tons of dirtbags into an early grave.
She was checking online to see if anything they did got reported by any American or Mexican news agency, and saw that it wasn't - just like one of the team said as they were leaving the scene of the border shooting.

Alejandro is an necesary evil..that's it.. amazing movie..pure reality.!!
The reason why bodies are often left up in public is two-fold: 1) it's the cartel's message to everyone, people don't want to disturb it for fear of being punished by the cartel. 2) a good chunk of the police is on the cartel's payroll, so they're going to take their sweet time answering any calls for hanging bodies. The bodies also have to be left in place while the authorities do their "investigation", just like anywhere else where a dead body is found, they don't remove it immediately.

Notice that Kate and her partner are frequently portrayed wearing the color blue, especially at the beginning, representing law and order. Alejandro and Matt, on the other hand, are almost always wearing shades of beige. As the film progresses, Kate's shirt becomes more faded and pale, signifying her plunge into the underworld with all its moral grays.

worse than you can ever imagine
the problem with signing that paper at the end was.. if any aspect of the operation came under scrutiny by congress or something like that.. and if anything illegal or improper were found to have happened (like if it came out in the newspapers that the CIA used a colombian hitman to kill the competition and take control of the drug trade in mexico), her name would be there having signed off on it all. at the very LEAST her career would be over. she could even be sent to prison for it. at the higher levels of agencies like the FBI, reputation and politics determine everything about your career. so she had good reason to be concerned. but it was even worse for her because she was by nature such a by-the-book kind of person, and the idea of lying on a report like that would be immoral in her mind.. especially considering the scale of the operation. that's my take on it anyway. a lot of people are frustrated by her throughout the movie, and i understand why.. but when you get that she's an FBI agent and the mindset she has about her job; she's just going by what she knows and she's got LOTS of experience in her world ..but very little experience in the world of the CIA.. who basically lie for a living
Kabir, Juarez is a real city in Mexico. It's one of the most dangerous cities in the world. It's home to the Juarez cartel. I lived in El Paso, Texas for a year and I know people them moved from Juarez to the US. El Paso is literally right across the border from Jaurez. One of my friends is married to a guy who is originally from there and I asked him if Juarez is as dangerous as is portrayed in movies and TV and thr media and he said yes. The only other dangerous place that I I know people from and they say the reputation is accurate and not overblown is South Side of Chicago. One of my really good friends grew up on the South Side of Chicago and he told me "the energy is just diffemet there." Obviously he means in a bad way.
Southside of Chicago isn't called Chiraq for nothing.
Yeah, Mexico actually has 6 of the 7 most dangerous cities in the world. Tiajana is number 1. Chicago, despite the south side, actually isn't even the most dangerous city in the US. That would be St Louis and then Baltimore. So while that area is terrible, you can avoid the danger by just never going there. I don't think that applies to cities in Mexico where Cartels can be anywhere.
@Kabir_ConsidersTextOnTelegrm-.as someone who is born and raised in El Paso Texas across from Juarez Mexico. I used to cross the border when I was 16 to go drink at the bars over there. As long as you had your school id, they’d let you in. The cover was $20 for drink and drown. Meaning, unlimited beer and liquor for $20!!!! I’m pretty sure all the bars in that street where money laundering business. And the cartel bosses don’t live in Mexico btw, they live in the USA with mansions. I don’t go over there anymore. Unless it’s for hospital visit, a $300 medical fee in the USA is $40 in Juarez. And yes, you do see all those police with machine guns in convoys. There no safe places there, you could be eating at a restaurant and all of the sudden the cartel gangs will come in an rape all the women in front of their husbands or fathers and if they say or do anything, they’re dead. Both, the father, husband, and the women…

The Mexican cop that was working for the cartel knew it was hazardous to your health to do so. It sucks for his family, but it probably was never going to end well. If not the way portrayed in this movie, then by a rival cartel action or some crap like that. It would eventually happen.
The sad part is, as a young man, he probably wanted to be a police man to help people. The problem is without his realization he joined an extremely corrupt police force, that if he tried to go against or leave, would not only killed him, but most likely his family too.

And that’s her problem. She is the opposite side of the same coin as the drug dealers…keeping everything status quo even though she knows they are losing the battle. The CIA plan would have gone off without a hitch if it wasn’t for Kate’s “by the book” attitude…even after being told by her boss that the book has been expanded she refuses to change.

Those bodies hanging really happens among other gruesome things. Knew of a pastor who was doing missionary work in Mexico and his teenage son got kidnapped by the cartel. It took quite some time to get him back alive but you could tell they banged him around a little. Some areas of Mexico is not safe at all
This movie is part of the writer’s (Taylor Sheridan) modern frontier trilogy. Please check out ‘Wind River’ and ‘Hell or High Water.’

An FBI federal agents yearly salary is just over $115,000 a year last I checked. If nobody mentioned it yet.
Another couple of movies you should check out is "13 Hours the Secret Soldiers of Benghazi" which is based on a true story and "Act of Valor" which is about a Navy Seal op.
Love those 2 films. Out of all the crap Michael Bay gets about his movies, 13 Hours is a VERY underrated film!!

She won't listen to Matt because she is FBI. She is trained to be arrogant, and to take over anything that she is involved in. The FBI does not consider itself to be subject to our laws. For them, the law is just a tool that they use on their targets.
Alejandro killing Silvio was a kindness. If he left him alive the surviving cartel leadership may suspect he was in on the infiltration, and retaliate against his family for his treason/incompetence. Silvio's death removed all suspicion and insured his wife and son's safety. Most ppl miss this point.
Its why Alejandro tells him as they drive into the desert that what is happening is for his family's sake.

Amazing movie! Great ride. You should check out Traffic as well. Will demonstrate the nuance in human form. The cartels have expanded their scope of influence beyond drugs, actually. Mexico and many central and south American countries operate as corrupt or narco states, so no simple responses to secure the border and challenge the cartels. The southern borders has dangers that are routine for families residing there or seeking relief from the cartels and gangs.
Watch “Lone Survivor “ it will explain why certain individuals want the fight at the highest level.

Funny thing is that pay isn't that great, from what I've heard. I don't know exact figures for law enforcement gigs, but I can tell ya when I was in the Navy and in the Submarine Service, having access to nuclear arms and facilities, I got paid a whopping $40 extra per month for that privilege.
McDonald's workers now made more than I did 20 odd years ago, when I first started. But, the adventure, the comradery, the stories, the actual feel of accomplishing worthwhile goals, changing the world, deterring wars, saving lives, taking devils... far more worth than having a six digit salary in a mundane 9-5, in my opinion.
The drug cartels actually do this stuff. They are pure evil.

Everyone i see react to this get really mad at Kate. They don't seem to understand that she's a person who believes that morals are what separate the good from the bad. Following the rules, obeying the law, doing the right thing. For a person like that, eye-for-an-eye justice makes you just as evil, just as immoral as the person who struck first.
The realization at the end, no matter how conflicting it was to her sense of morality, was that this evil they face can only ever truly be taken on and taken down by those who are willing to sacrifice their true morality. Those who - even acting ultimately towards a greater good - were willing to be murders and torturers themselves, who even acting in a law enforcement capacity, break the very law they're trying to enforce.
Kate could never beat them,
because she could never BE them.
That is the fight she's having the entire film, because in her mind Alejandro and Matt are no different than the cartel murders.

Villeneuve's films are intensely ambiguous. There is no clear dividing line between "heroes" and "villains" - and there is CERTAINLY no glorification of violence on his part (though young male moviegoers often see it there anyway...).
He doesn't preach or tell you what to think about the brutal violence and resulting trauma he puts on the screen in most of his films: he just shows you what they do to people and lets the viewer decide what they think about the morally grey universe they see on-screen.

Kabir, the violence in this movie is tame when compared to real daily life in general. This is the case with most movies. Shootouts and murders happen every day in the States and Mexico. Somebody is always getting shot. I suggest that you watch some of the local news from here in the States.
Based on your reactions, I strongly suggest that you learn what occurs here in the States on a daily basis to keep yourself safe before coming here. This is because you seem too shocked and surprised when you react to videos. Learning what goes on on the daily will allow you to learn how to conduct and carry yourself when you come here. For example, like not engaging in small pointless talk with people. Or, making yourself look like a visitor, tourist, or and easy target.
One of the most important things that you need to know is how not to make yourself a mark or target. Maintaining skeptism and awareness of your surroundings at all times will be beneficial.
Even though the videos you react to are entertaining, informative, and enticing; they do not inform you of the dangers associated with going to those places.
For example, you've reacted to several videos about the South. Many of them reference how "welcoming" and "kind" that region is. Well, the truth is that the South has a history of not being that kind and welcoming to people that look like you and me. There is an abundance of troglodytes in the South who will not welcome you.
Also, keep in mind that here the States you never know when some suburban nut will go to a movie theater, mall, store, or anywhere and shoot it up because he is angry due to his parents not buying him a Playstation.
While here, carry yourself as if you have seen everything. This is because you never know when something will jump off. So, if you witness something, you keep it moving as if you did not witness anything. This means not pointing, looking surprised, and starring.
Finally, as someone else said, one wrong turn and ending up in a sketchy part of town can end up being a serious problem. Do not honk or stare at anybody.
If you know someone here, have them accompany and show you around. If you don't know anyone who can do that, do not go off the "beaten paths".
People have lost their minds here recently. There are so many who lack self control and respect for others. So, always maintaining awareness and being cognizant of your surroundings are vital.
You should definitely check out the movie ‘Savages’ with Aaron Taylor Johnson, Blake Lively, Taylor Kitsch, John Travolta, and Benicio Del Toro

Wow you frustrated the hell out of me….seriously how can you not get that Kate is in law enforcement because she believes in what it’s supposed to represent. If we resort to throwing the rules out the window then how do we as a society differentiate between the law and criminals? What good is a victory if it makes you a criminal? The United States is supposed to represent the ideals of equality, honesty and a Justice system where the accused have rights. Throughout history we have failed to live up to that way too often but that is still the standard we hold ourselves to achieve. To be ok with our law enforcement going outside the law is essentially giving up on every principle our country founded itself upon.

Kate's character, views everything through the lens of moral certainty. Even though Alejandro is on the right side she sees his actions as outside the law (premeditated murder) she doesn't have the capacity of justice by moral equation (an eye for an eye), She has to look at everything through the letter of the law. For her, operating in gray areas of moral uncertainty is not possible. This movie comes at an interesting time in American History. Given the events of the past 6 years, the deep state coup d'etat conducted by the FBI and CIA against the American Presidency, all FBI agents good or bad are now tainted as corrupt by association. This movie even though it was released before the 2016 presidential election has become a simile for the FBI and CIA acting outside the scope of their constitutional authority. It is very real and it is a threat to the continued existence of the United States government. It is the primary example Americans are now brushing up on President Thomas Jeffersons's "Right to Abolish" penned in the Declaration of Independence, July 4th 1776. “Whenever any form of government becomes destructive of these ends [life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness] it is the right of the people to alter or abolish it, and to institute new government...”
