In 1927, an Istanbul-born Greek musician, Tetos Demetriades, having recently translocated to the US, recorded a piece of music he remembered from his youth. “Misirlou”, loosely translated as “Egyptian Girl”, was a swaying, erotic folk song performed in the rebetiko style that was popular among Greek Anatolians: “The sweet way you look at me lights flames in my heart . . . honey seeps from your lips.” The mesmerising and catchy melody, not credited with a composer, proved popular and the song was performed in a variety of styles in subsequent years. It also became something of what we would today call a “world music sensation”: versions were recorded in Arabic and Yiddish, and various communities of the eastern Mediterranean laid claim to the original melody. I'm not sure but Ofra used some parts of the Yemeni folks music in her music. It is not prohibited when that brings something good.
True it should be pointed out so that the imagery is yemeni the music however isn't this is Yiddish they do not speak Yiddish in Yemen not even Jewish yemeni the song is about a desert princess who will never be forgotten this song is over 100 years old it is an amazing song of cultural significance it was also performed in many other languages over the years including a modern instrumental version used on the movie Pulp Fiction

@@andrewsoifert699: The Yemenites I've known (who were all Jewish), spoke Hebrew as well as a dialect of Arabic that had a lot of Hebrew elements. If you see the lyrics of a song sung in the Yemenite dialect, they're hard to understand, even if you know Hebrew.

@@olgamakarova2587 когда-то я работал в Йемене, евреев уже не застал. От них оставались только кладбища и арабы, чьи бабушки или прабабушки были еврейками. По историческим причинам основная масса йеменцев совершенно не озабочена палестинской проблемой. Но они очень любят рассказывать, как йеменские евреи в Израиле чтут йеменские обычаи. Это и видно из этих кадров. Танцы и обычаи йеменских евреев очень мало отличаются от обычаев йеменских арабов, что, впрочем, не удивительно.
@@Fuad_Haciyev57 да, да, я тоже не сразу поняла, что это за культура! То, что вы рассказываете, для меня действительно ново. В университете в США у нас из Йемена были только арабы, я и предположить не могла, что в давние времена евреи тоже населяли эту страну.
@@olgamakarova2587по меркам истории евреи уехали из Йемена не так давно, после образования гос-ва Израиль. А жили они там давно. Йеменкой была небезызвестная царица Савская, которая родила мальчика от царя Соломона. Именно с тех времён иудаизм стал распространяться среди местного населения. До ислама (где-то в V в. н.э.) этой страной даже правили цари-иудеи. Да что Йемен, в Медине на момент начала Мухаммедом своей пророческой миссии жили евреи, как собственно евреи, так и арабы-иудеи. Они не признали Мухаммеда пророком и уехали в Сирию. Сейчас уже невозможно определить, кто из сирийских евреев - потомок мединских евреев, а кто - мединских иудеев-арабов.

Great work, Olga! You're doing so much to keep the Yiddish culture alive. I hope it will live forever. A lot of people think this song is Greek, but ''Mιsιr'' (no dots over the ''ι'') is the TURKISH word for ''Egypt'' and ''Mιsιrlι', means ''something or someone from Egypt''.
Its Greek though.

@@stevecarson4162 Misirlou was the Greek word for Egyptian as well at that time. Spoken Greek used to have lots of Turkish words in it
@@stevecarson4162 it's a greek song about a greek orthodox man falling in love with a muslim egyptian woman so yes, it is a greek song. the melody is quite popular in minor asia but misirlou is a greek song. misir is turkish and arab word for egypt however -lou is a greek ending; therefore again, this song is greek.

Henna. It's a middle eastern wedding custom, nowadays I think only Syrian and Yemenite Jews practice that. Other than them it's still done in India, Turkey and some places in the Balkan. It's supposed to ward off the evil eye and beautify the bride.
