The Scales and Arpeggios to Use in the Blues and How to Practice Them

  • Welcome to this weeks lesson! Let's dive into some basic tools we need to start building a Blues vocabulary.
Many of the notes used in the Blues fall within the major and minor pentatonic scales. As I demonstrate, we can make great sounding solos with that alone but, if we want to dive deeper into outlining each chord change, we need to know our arpeggios.
I'll show you exactly how I go about practicing these scales and arpeggios by grouping them together in 5 different positions. These scales and arpeggios provide us with a blueprint for many of the notes we can use to be expressive over the Blues and, by mapping them out all over the fretboard, we can play start to play with freedom!

I love how Jack says, in short: Copy the great players... which is of course sage advice: But start by copying jack first... because he's done the work and you can just park your car right here and fill your tank with premium licks and runs - as tasteful and stylish as the best of all times / subscribe and start breaking his stuff down today, I've gotten better in less than a month just by literally stealing his runs - its PURE GOLD people... this has been a lifesaver for me and I've been playing for almost 40 years

Yep, I just came across him today and instantly subscribed and hit the bell. Been playing 44 years and its plain to see how much and how fast I can learn from this guy!

The more I watch Jack, the more I realize the man is an encyclopedia of music theory. Going through those shapes and scales like that with no mistakes, no pauses, and no cuts of the camera is pretty amazing. The Lord gave you a gift my friend!

This is the first lesson in a long time that I kept coming back to practice until it felt solid. So easy to look for knowledge anywhere else instead of deepening what's already there!

What an excellent lesson. I'm 72, and I've been playing acoustic guitar my whole life. I just recently bought an Epiphone Dot and a little Fender Vibro-Champ amp. I am having a blast, thanks to these great Jack Ruch tutorials. Thank you, Jack!

JACK! Watching and listening to the first 56 seconds of this video reminds me of the the first time I heard Robben Ford or Mike Bloomfield, even Clapton with the Bluesbreakers! Except that you present it without going over the top with show off speed, playing so classy with that extra touch of jazzy knowledge that makes the simplest riffs come alive with newness, it kills me! Playing 56 years now I’m 70 years old and Robben’s teaching course I took was complicated when it didn’t need to be, like he was showing off during his “lessons” I came away feeling like I learned nothing. Flat. More knowledgeable but uninspired. Your touch, sound, FEEL, and “outside the box” knowledge just kills me, like the first time I heard you. Makes this old man feel the way I felt the first time I heard Bloomfield, etc. like a kid again- excited! Thank You Again!! - SJB

I've loosely known these 'layers' of scales and arpeggios for a little while but struggled to incorporate them into a coherent exercise. Seeing a full demonstration of this in each position of the neck is just what I need to consolidate that information. Thank you very much. I know this one will bear results.

Your knowledge and ability of this has been a (needed) gentle rebuke. I have been playing Professionally since 1966, but I realize how that got in my way. "Well, I'm already making my living doing what I love, and on a fairly large scale, so I don't need to work on all of that." (Opened for the Allman Bros. in '69, and Ricky Nelson in '71). That was FOOLISH thinking. I share this now, for any of your students who may fall into that self defeating nonsense. I let YEARS go by where I basically played the same thing every night and spent NO time at all learning anything beyond what I knew. DON'T DO THAT! I watch your fluidity and your immediate knowledge of WHAT you're playing, and I kick myself in the butt! That being said, I want to thank you for posting such a valuable lesson, and encourage your students to LEARN IT... ALL OF IT! God Bless You!
