20 years of the War on Terror and the Soviet operations of the 1980s place Afghanistan as one of the most important combat theatres of the past half century. Few war zones have ever seen more A-10C, AH-64D, OH-58, F-16C, F/A-18C, CH-47F, Mi-24P, Mi-8MTV2, and Su-25 sorties than this. The Afghanistan map includes the rugged mountain ranges of the Hindu Kush, the vast deserts of the Dasht-e Kavir and Dasht-e Lut, and the fertile valleys and river basins. High-resolution aerial imagery has been utilised to enhance the realism and accuracy of the map. Great efforts have been dedicated to accurately portraying the unique cultural and urban features of Afghanistan. The map features detailed modelling of rivers, roads, vegetation, rocks, small stones, ground clutter, and geological formations enhance immersion and realism at low altitude. Extensive testing and optimization have been conducted to ensure optimal performance and compatibility with a wide range of hardware configurations.

I have to say; this looks technically next level. This is the best looking map in terrms of textures and colour I have seen from the ED side. Impressive! Hope more care is taken for optimazation than the Marianas. Look forward to hearing what people say when it comes out.

Good news for you! Polychop's been working on the Kiowa for a little while now. Here's hoping it drops in 2024. It would be great to hear from real pilots who can fly in the same places they got to operate in real life. Can't think of a better review than that.

New logistics is the number one thing I'm looking forward to in DCS, that and decent infantry with ATGM's if it's on the list.
@@cromwellthesynth I actually got to use a real C130-H simulator. Climbing a 12 foot stair case to enter it is when the excitement started. Taking off, traffic pattern and Landing was amazing. The flight engineer asked if I was a pilot. After stating most people bounce it and yours was near textbook.
I spent a year in Afghanistan riding on the ramp of a Chinook as a gunner. Always wondered what it'd be like being the pilot.

Ah yes...Chinooks...doing false LZ's because knowing how a basketball must feel was something all of us had on our bucket lists. Oh, and sorry about the smell, we kinda' hoped the ANA would chicken out, but they didn't do that until they actually -needed- to be brave. >

I spent several years total in Afghanistan, starting in 2001 with A-10's. Seeing some of this video took me back to that place, and stirred my feelings a bit. Beautiful work gentlemen, keep at it!

they are all put into post editing for better quality before they push the videos out. I run on high setting and it looks nothing like this

As an Afghan guy, I can say it'll be freaking good but I hope tk see also places like bamyan and I hope we'll see all the regions of Afghanistan from full desert of Kandahar to the mountains of Badakhshan !

Loving to do sunrise flights in a warbird above Nevada`s desert making 1.5h round trips while listening to some quality content podcasts. Nevada desert certainly has its magic.

Great job ED. Unfortunately I won't be getting it due to personal reasons, I spent to much time there IRL and don't care to go back. I hope it is successful though.

As someone who spent a significant portion of their operational career flying in this theatre, I am so grateful this is coming out. It's incredible how close some of the terrain relief and detail is to exactly what is forever imprinted in my memory. Can't wait for the northern half of the country to follow. Hoping that Tarin Kowt, Bastion et al are modelled as dirt strips!
Hopefully this is realistic enough to reclaim our equipment we left behind.

CH-47 'Tricky' casevac missions out of Sangin. Or Pedro with the UH-60 mod. AH-1, UH-1Y development is now a must with this map.
AH-1W an UH-1Y would be simply the best news a chopper guy could get from ED but I've already asked its a no sadly

This looks fantastic - amazing colours and textures. Definitely not another desert map as some people are saying. Will definitely be picking this up once the whole map has been released.
DCS is probably the only game where players dont get angry at development delays, good job ED!

@@rodrigonunez9451 Not exactly. You can purchase the entire Afghan map now at $48.99. It will only go to $69.99 once the entire map is complete. The Southwest portion of the map including the Helmand Province was an incredibly active region of the map. You may wish to read the books from Ed Macy regarding his time as an AH-64D pilot there. -Wags
Been flying this sim since the days of Lock on Modern Air Combat.
The progress of this sim since 2018 is impressive for what is such a small company in real terms. They continue to ramp up the content and quality every year it seems and cannot wait to see what level we have in the next few years.
Keep on the path ED, loving this sim.
I jumped on just before Lock-On dropped when I found a Flanker 2.5 CD in the bin at Walmart and grabbed it because it looked cool. A little while later, Lock-On came out and I immediately grabbed it and was blown away at how much stuff there was to fly. Planes like the Su-25 that I'd only ever heard about watching Wings as a kid, the A-10 was a fun experience. I can still remember sitting on my friend's couch on a laptop just scrolling through the development pictures from the new Mi-24 model that at the time was mind blowingly detailed. The textures looked so crisp and the model was so much more detailed than anything I had seen before. It's wild to think back to that and then go in game and see how the current Mi-24 (spent a lot of time staring at that new 3D model working on skins) was so much more detailed than the old one that I thought looked incredible at the time.
Fast forward to the Apache, and my mind couldn't have even fathomed that level of detail back when Lock-On had just come out. I think the number of 3D bolts and rivets alone on that thing would have melted down my high school computer.

For those that have not already read the books from Ed Macy (UK Apache pilot), they are a great read and take place in the Helmand province (location of the initial early access release).
Thanks for the tip! I read Apaches over Libya thanks to Eagle Dynamics and the release of the Apache, I remember a snippet from the book was posted by ED before the Apache release, superb book and well worth reading! I'll get to reading these ones as well!
Thank you ED for bringing this out! As players we have been waiting so long for this - it will enable us to recreate so many t historically aspects of ground and air warfare.
If you keep this up to date and continue investing in it, I think this will be the most used map for all modern fighters and helis. This country has seen so much combat in the last century like no other country in the world.
Looking at the size of the map I think it is a fair option (not a must!) to be able to split it up when I only want a smaller part of it.
I personally prefer-ordered the entire map right away!

Another masterpiece from DCS!
Lots of discussion online about the map release. But not a lot about that Chinook, which I'm eager to see a little more of. Especially the cockpit. Some great images of that aircraft in this pretty sexy trailer.
Was at Bagram AB. Maybe it might have it in this package. The trailer takes me back with some good memories with great freinds.
While not at initial release, it will certainly be added.
Of course ED I'm excited for the map but bring on the CH-47! let's go!!!! for both!
I would really love some helo missions where you need to pick up/ drop off/ resupply troops under fire. Like a whole campaign. That kind of stuff really gets me fired up!

Crazy... When I was in Afghanistan I couldn't wait to leave it. Now I can't wait for a map of it to come out.
Looking outstanding. Leaps and bounds. Though, I'd say I'm surprised by a lack of Kiowa Warrior shots considering how prolific and lauded it was in the theatre. Same goes for the Gazelle. Hope a future release trailer does them justice.
I'm seeing a lot of that Abrams SEPv3.... and lot of potential for 'Combined Arms 2.0' in this theatre. CA deserves more love - NineLine, I know you're with me!

0:07 shows such a beautiful river! Looks like ED learned a lot from the development of Marianas.
The photorealism of the terrain textures is also really next level. Whereas all previous terrains look like generated textures based on the real thing, Afghanistan looks like it uses satellite imagery as its basis.
Question: If a server is running the Afghanistan map, would a player who only owns one portion of it be able to play that server (after the other parts get fully added)? How would the compatibility work between players who see more or less detail than the other? I.e. if a building isn't modeled for the player without the full map, would their bombs be blocked or clip through..
There will be compatibility between all purchase options for multiplayer. You can see a similar case with the Normandy 2 Upgrade.

I see small freezes. And this is the trailer, that is supposed to show the best shiny thing. Just imagine what will happen on regular PC during low-level flight. In VR.
They need Cobras. It felt so 'Nam when I was in Bagram in '04 and '05 seeing Huey's and Cobras flying around. The Apache's were kinda hidden away so I rarely got to see them. Oh, and they also need Prowlers, which was the reason I was there. Go Navy!

WW2 stuff needs more attention:
-FW190 A8 needs a variant with the BMW 801TU, and a number of bugs need fixing;
- WW2 Assets needs more AI planes such as B-24, P-38, BF110, BF109 G;
- Tempest V high fidelity module;
- Map of Germany and the Eastern front.
Can only hope for more WW2 stuff, I think they are heading to the pacific first but the Yak 9 is coming soon also

It is an option if you want are on a budget or are interested in just a particular region. You can purchase the entire map in the same way as all other maps. It's just an option. -Wags

Still can't figure out the purpose of this map. What is interesting about flying around in completely uncontested airspace to conduct CAS/strikes on an extremist organization in a country we're not in conflict with.
Yes, lots of air operations occurred here, but in the 80s it was part of a genocidal hostile invasion and in the 2000s, it was a counter-terrorism operation with muddy ROEs and extremely difficult combat ID. War is never pretty, and I suppose its a little weird we have combat sims as a hobby no matter what the setting is, but simulating the type of warfare that happened here just seems kinda gross.
DCS is a sand box where you can create any scenario you wish to, there will be plenty of different missions to fly and have fun with. Thanks - Scott / bignewy

NTTR is a sandbox. The rest of the maps recreate specific regions for their obvious historical relevance.

I love DCS but the explosion and blast effects need to be rework like yesterday. A game with such amazing graphics but with poor explosions effects...

I don't like sand. It's coarse and rough and irritating - and it gets everywhere.

Afghanistan was more dust and dirt than sand.
Still remember that first flight into Stan's Place; the way the black mountains just came out of the pan flat brown desert. Like a giant kids sand pit. Was surreal.
