You need to know what the alloys are in the billet you buy. Then you can figure your heat treating process. There is a lot of Pakistani Damascus out there but i have had good luck with the seller called “tx” also there is an American maker out of Alabama. Their billets are nearly twice the price, but its verrry good material and heat treats fairly well, but any Damascus will not harden as well as a blade from one alloy. Making Damascus from two air hardening alloys would be sweet! All the best.
@@Little_River_Forge a good video. I think you were working that billet too long after coming out of the forge. Even though you got a good heat on the billet, you have a very short forging temp because the billet was so thin that it would not hold the heat for very long. Its just my opinion based on my experience that the crack you experienced was caused by the blade being to cold for forging. A cold shut or crack in the billet would have showed up much sooner if the billet was badly made. I have about 50 years experience in metal craftsmanship. Not trying to show you which end of the hammer to hold, just sharing my observations.
I’m not sure if he has anything left for sale but you can check his Etsy store or I could ask him, I doubt he has anything available the storm took a lot from him.
Can you make a axe? I am a viking reenactor and it will be great if I can make my own axe, I just don't know how to make things like that, I stile making small things like S hugs and so on
@@Little_River_Forge Hehe then it can be a leaning as well for you hehe. What I am after is a small bushcraft beardaxe, I dont think it matters what type of axe you make, it is just how to make the hole thing, blade, and how to do so the handle can get in to it.
That blade looks really nice and perfect thickness i can't wait to see how it turns out
Nice work dude 👍👍

It was just a idea for the video. Figured it try it out for those who are looking to try but are on the fence about it.
