A very long time ago, there was an option for someone to be "canonised" through popular acclaim. It wasn't always a formal process as we know it now. A great many Saints were never formally canonised, but were acclaimed as Saints. It's a complex story, but canonisation wasn't officially reserved to the Pope until the 17th Century.
