Hello Mr. Crawford; I've been watched your video for a long time. As a South Korean fan of Norse mythology who loves your translation, your works are awesome!
Hi Professor Jackson Crawford, I took your class on Vikings at CU Boulder and it was one of my favorite classes throughout my university experience. I’m having a graduation party and I would be honored if you attended
Interesting quote there at the end mr. Crawford. I suppose that's your inspiration. I am very thankful for you sharing your knowledge with us. Wouldn't even have known half of what I know now about Norse myth.
When I went horse-riding one winter in Iceland, my horse (Icelandic Horse of course) was called Bjarki. I was told some of this wonderful story on that long snowy, icy ride.
Hahaha, it's almost like a movie in that way! 12:40 By the way I love the magic in these. The mind controlling of a bear, a magic boar, necromancy! I much prefer Old Norse magic with future sight, undead, curses, runes and shapeshifting. Than the arcane kind of stuff where they throw firebolts and such. Although that's cool too.
Dr. Crawford, there has just been a character design reveal for Thor in the upcoming Video Game God of War Ragnarok could you please share your opinion on the design; there are mixed reactions due to his physique not being what some would call accurate.
YOU ARE MY FAVORITE SOURCE!!! thank you SO MUCH. I would never know the most accurate information, and be able to debunk popular misconceptions if it weren’t for you. I will continue to watch for as long as you upload :) also, your audiobook of the Poetic Edda is so relaxing! Hope to become a patreon supporter soon :)
Both Snorre and Saxo build on an earlier, lost, saga. They both presumably also talked to Skalds, and others (Saxo says so directly, in his foreword and dedication).
I heard that Hrolf Kraki makes an appearance in Beowulf. I have read two different translations of Beowulf, and I did not see Hrolf Kraki's name. Where does he show up?
Now, I am curious (but mostly ashamed at myself for thinking the Bear changing sort thing was Scottish) to read more about that whole "Brave" "Brother Bear" notion that a bear could actually be personified. Up to this point, my knowledge of any such thing comes from Disney. I actually need to figure out who those Picts were, I am suspecting they were Nordic, but I know nothing.
Hey, I really liked the God Of War analysis you made for IGN. It would be really revealing to see your thoughts on "Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice" 1 & 2.
I guess the early modern Brit lore version of showing how hardcore you are, like these folk drinking heavily before fighting for their lives, is Drake saying 'there is time to finish the game and beat the Spaniards too' when the armada is sighted during a game of bowls.
Hello mr. Crawford, I have a question for you, there is a Scandinavian style of wrestling that you may or may not be aware of, known as glima, and it claims to have in some way been descended by the Vikings, is there was any historical legitimacy to these claims? Just so you know there are three Styles this kind of wrestling, there is lausaatök, which is more of a free style of wrestling, there is broktak, which involves wrapping your arms around someone under the armpit and over-the-shoulder it kind of reminds me of Scottish backhold wrestling, and I forget the name of the last one but I hear it is pretty common but I hear that it mainly involves wrapping around a garment around someone's waist
I mean Bodvar is doing magic himself. I doubt he's a 'non-believer'. Instead perhaps he despises Odinn because Odinn is the wolf, whereas he is the bear. Big rivals.

Dr. Crawford, you're truly our modern Óðinn. Thank you

Poul Anderson's Hrolf Kraki's Saga is a good read........Can't wait for the Doc's new book. and have my copy on order.
As a Dane, I read the story in school, but the nosebiting is new to me. It was probably too bloody for my teacher...
This was a nice little gift to listen to on what ended up being a chaotic day at work.

YESSSS!! In your reading video I had asked a question about the parallels with Beowulf, thank you for the recommended further reading!!
Impatiently waiting for the book! I love these old stories!
Took you long enough. Can't believe I've been waiting for this for some time
Looking forward to your new book!
I pre ordered my copy months ago. I am patient

He is Hrothulf (or Hroðulf), Hrothgar's nephew. The 'th' sound in the name was lost over time in Iceland.
@@gadpivs Thank you. It seems so obvious now haha!
@@gadpivs Pretty much exactly how you have German Rudolf and Dutch Roelof.

I like to think Bodvar "astrally projects" into a spirit-bear.
Dr Crawford please share your opnion about the Thor design and looks in god of war ragnarok

In Norwegian year is the same as in Sweden/Denmark "år." But hour in all three countries is "time."
Does anyone know some primary source books I can get to learn more about the vikings? Anglo-Saxon Chroncles, Prose Edda etcc
Speaking of the Gesta Danorum...why is it so difficult to find an English translation of books 10-16?
I guess the early modern Brit lore version of showing how hardcore you are, like these folk drinking heavily before fighting for their lives, is Drake saying 'there is time to finish the game and beat the Spaniards too' when the armada is sighted during a game of bowls.
What about the story of "Svipdag" and his two brothers? Aren`t they part of the Saga of Hrolf Kraki?
Do Norse elves have pointed ears? Is there any mention of elf ears?

I think that the idea to call Hjalti "the rightous" was sarcasm. :)
The meaning of "Bjarki" probobly is "little bear".
Woo!
Sá þig í sjóvarpinu hér á Íslandi ;D hafđi mjög gaman af ađ heyra þig tala íslensku!
