    If it happens after you hit a pothole check the pre-load on the swivels. If that is to low you can have death wobble. Other possibilities are the obvious loose parts, play in ball joints etc...

      This time the cause was our old and used winter tires but will need to check everything properly

    Death wobble on my defender was caused by the Panhard rod bolts coming loose. Tried changing tyres around first thinking maybe a wobbly wheel was throwing it off which helped but wobble was still there around 40mph. Couldn’t find anything loose apart from managing to get the Panhard rod bolts half a turn tighter and this fixed it.

      Death wobble can come from many issues, even a small one. With our mud tires on, no more steering wobble at all. Our winter tires were very old and used. It was scary!

    Death wobble is often due to something worn - wheel bearings (to much play) track rod ends - worn, panhard bushes - worn or the swivel balls need resetting - too loose. Finding out what is the cause is the main part of the task - could be all of them to a limited degree.

      This time for us it seems to be worn out winter tires

    Bonjour. Je n'ai pas de leçon à donner vu quelques grosses conneries que j'ai faites depuis plus de 40 ans que je conduis mes land rover. Néanmoins je suis surpris pour ce qui etait dévissé.
    Pourquoi ?. Une autre chose que je véririerais c'est la précontrainte des roullements des axes de fusées. Cela en ce qui me concerne beaucoup éliminé des vibrations. Bonne route en land.

    • @offtrackfamily
      @offtrackfamily  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Les vibrations extrêmes ont effectivement dévissé un endroit qui en general est très difficile à dévisser, mais les rotules de direction ont été remplacées très récemment et n était donc pas du tout grippees comme à leur habitude.

    two things I haven't seen you do in the previous videos might help center the steering wheel look in the workshop manual and bleed the hydraulics maybe air in the system look in the workshop manual and maybe play in the steering pump you can do that too adjust but beware if you adjust that too much it can block it is actually for professionals

    I've had it a few years ago on a Discovery after I've bent the track rod on a tree stump. Unfortunately after I've had the steering aligned it only went away when I replaced the front tires. Driving a couple of meters with both wheels pointing inwards killed the tires.

    • @offtrackfamily
      @offtrackfamily  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for sharing this experience. We didn't bend anything but our used winter tires are the bad boys. It confirms tires can play a major role in creating issues

    That's not great but at least your husband knows the car inside out and has the skills to fix it 👍. Hopefully its all sorted. If its any consolation, I have a new Defender, its 8 weeks old and has severe transmission vibration! 😣

    Sorry to hear about your scary adventure! As a Jeep owner, this is something I've also experienced before and it's scary (and a bit embarrassing) every time. Death wobble is generally something that solid axle vehicles experience. They're caused by worn or loose components (joints) and triggered by one of the wheels hitting a bump on the road or an unbalanced tire. Once you've experienced a full on DW like you did, it's possible that some of the other steering components are also damaged. I would definitely inspect all the joints as soon as you can. The joints on the parts I would check are: Tie Rod, Track Bar, Drag Link and your Steering Stabilizer. To check them, start the vehicle and have someone turn the steering wheel from side to side, put a hand on each joint and feel for movement. If any of the them feel loose, they need to be replaced--don't wait as DW will quickly worsen over time. Additionally, I would check the ball joints. You can do that by jacking one corner of the vehicle up, stick a big pry bar below the tire and pry up. Separately, grab the tire by hand and rock it. If you can see/feel any movement on the ball joints, they need to be replaced. Finally, if everything is tight and you're still getting wobbles, I would check each of the bolt holes to make sure they're not wallowed out by the previous death wobbles. Hope this helps. Good luck!

      Thanks for sharing all this! Will need to go through everything for an in depth check even if we now know it's our old winter tires the cause

    Recently had the wobble due to improperly tightened new steering damper.

  • @roblynch9219
    @roblynch9219 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    normally when a defender does this the Front Panhard bushing is worn out (normally on axle side, remove Panhard and inspect the bushing). Other causes, Loose wheel nuts, or the stub axle nut(s) are loose, these you test by jacking the from up and seeing if there is play in the wheel. .The steering Rod, and drag link between the wheels will come loose and is normally a result of one of the above not usually the cause.

    • @offtrackfamily
      @offtrackfamily  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for sharing this. Will need to do a full check up but we're now confident it was only due to our worn out winter tires.

  • @alanhowatson3462

    I've had this on a Range rover and defender and it was the steering damper on both occasions that was the problem. Hope this helps.

    As others have said worn ball joints, bushes, swivels. I had issues balancing my tyres until I filled them with dyna beads and with this and new ball joints and bushes haven't had issue of DW since.

    i once had a steering wheel wobble with my hilux while driving down a mountain in greece. turned out some nuts of the right front wheel had loosened... 😅
    but it never came back, so yours probably won't be as easy to fix as that... 🙈

    Hi,
    One of you has to sit behind the wheel and the other has to go under the car. Turn the steering wheel several times to the left and to the right in quick jerks. Then you will see that you have a bad steering seal. I had it too. But that's a job for two people.

    Vérifier le Silentbloc de la barre panhard, le jeu au pivots de moyeu, jeu aux roulements de roues puis l’équilibrage des roues.
    Un ensemble de jeux peut provoquer cela et surtout le Silentbloc de la barre panhard,

    By no Means am I a mechanic but I must ask a very dumb question. Could it be weight distribution of cargo such as the new batteries etc in the Land Rover. I mean like twisting the body or frame to where it is staring other components of the vehicle. Take it easy on me with the backlash please.

      We were concerned regarding the weight of our electrical setup on one side. This is also one of the reasons why we changed sides the awning and maxtrax holder/table, the long-range fuel tank also helps balance a little that weight. In any case, don't feel this is the issue because it didn't occur when we had our new mud tires on even though we drove many times on the highway with this new setup.

      Nous n'avons pas encore remplacé nos vieux pneus d'hiver, ce sera pour l'hiver prochain en raison du prix. Mais après un check et un bon serrage, nous pensons qu'il s'agit bien des pneus usés qui ont causés ce death wobble.
