This is not only an anime romance that feels wholesome, but also manages to be realistic, funny, and relatable without overexaggerating.
Right. This anime takes benefit of every single character just to provide us a romantic blushing moment. The everyday situations are used in such a romantic way.
>realistic and relatable
Yeah bruh it was totally realistic when coach Mitaka broke his own leg on purpose to get admitted to the same hospital Godai was staying at and come between him and Kyoko....
@@joshuabrant3487 they never meant it’s 100% realistic and accurate to real life theyres obviously ridiculous moments in the anime just over all it’s realistic in a sense that there’s no weird powers neither is it too perverted it’s just a bunch of roommates living out their everyday lives while godai tries to get with kyoko it’s obviously still an anime genius so there’s gonna be super exaggerated moments,
Watched this when i was 13 , watched it again when i was 25, and watched it again when i was 40. All gives me different feels. Truly a legendary anime no one can replicate
Great video. Maison Ikkoku is one of my all time favorite Romance stories, and it's hard to find similar ones. As someone close to Graduating from University myself, I found a genuine connection to how Godai felt throughout the story. I hope I can find more stories like this in the future.
@Emmanuel Sida I also seem to find that a lot of high school romcom/romance characters don't act like real people sometimes. Godai, Kyoko, and all the others react to the events in very realistic ways I think.
@@SorenEmber , i think that this is not one of the best, not even the best.
*This is the masterpiece of romance anime.*
Even Kozue is relatable to us. Part of me wish Godai and Kozue ended up together. Kozue is such a bubbly, not playing hard to get, and cheerful person. But just like in real life, we all have our Kozue, who was there waiting for us when we were chasing someone else..
its been years but i recomend video girl ai and i"s
The only anime that when i finished left me crying...
You can't find a masterpiece like this now...
The comedy, the romance the sadness and the emotions, this anime is in its own league. and can never be reduplicated
Hey Ice Bear , you are right! This anime surpasses anything that I have ever seen & by the end of the last episode, I was feeling sad. It never fails to evoke a sense of Nostalgia.
Any anime recommendations like this ? What's your Top 10 manga/anime ?
I was sobbing like a baby, it was the sweetest ending ever! I started watching this after Ranma and I loved the ending so much more they are honestly incomparable. I agree I need more like this but I don't think any will compare!
@@rahulranjan9013 ranma 1/2
To be honest the only time i feel like crying was when godai give his wedding speech in front of everyone at chachamaru. Because at that time i suddenly realize the show has come to its end. And because it's 80s show, there is no fan made illustration or any content that i can enjoy nowadays
Never and ever ❤
This did take real time. The story covered 6 or 7 years, Godai growing through university and getting his teaching licence, and Pre -K to Grade 2 teachers in Japan go through more training than others, make it all worth it. Best, most romantic anime and manga ever. The cherry blossoms at the end make it all beautiful.
oh man, i just finished the series last week and you nailed this one on the head. great job. i am not gonna be able to forget this series, its a beautiful rollercoaster. i would love to find something similar that is this grounded.
The only equivalent is Sondheim. I strive to write as poignantly as Takahashi does. She’s brilliant. I’m so glad to live in a time with her work.
You know the beautiful duality with the anime? While Godai is the main focus during most episodes, the intros focus on Kyoko. It shows how the story is equally about them
I think the first outros focused on Godai more. But then the last intros and outros started focusing on both of them equally.
I just finished watching the entire series, I cried so much in the last episodes... this is one of the best series I’ve ever watched, the stories are so grounded and so realistic, we can all feel what they are going through.
You and I both! I get happy just knowing that other people have gone through what I experienced. Just finished the series yesterday
@@rizkunisnator and what you thought about it?
I absolutely loved it. I got pretty depressed in the last 10 episodes because I didn't want the series to end. When I finally finished, I was too happy for everyone to feel too sad. I hope grandma Godai got to meet her great grandchild.
@@rizkunisnator it is beautiful, I’ve watched already 5 times and I keep laughing and getting emotional when I see it. It is nothing that I’ve seen before. I’m trying to collect the manga now
@@etidancal I am too! My wish is that more people experience this anime so that maybe we can get a sequel.
One of the greatest universal stories of all time-period. It reveals so much about our deep and imperfect human nature and beauty. You can't read or watch it without it having an impact on your heart, experiencing deep pain, and falling into a melancholic state. I know Blues or Wabi-Sabi are overused. But I cannot find other words to describe my feelings right after it.
I first watched the series back I'm 2010, and after a recent rewatch, it's still a very compelling journey from beginning to end. There is so much character development and maturity for the two main characters, and the long episode count really does make it feel like much time has passed to establish this growth. Definitely a classic that features timeless themes regardless of the era it came from.
Maison Ikkoku is still one of the best animes I’ve ever seen. The writing ranges from hilarious to tender. It is often so sincere and really gets you thinking about life and the importance people can come to have in it.
I'm really considering to start this series and your discussion on how this story's characters handle emotional baggage really resonated with me.
Great review. I love how it accurately describes how someone can go from mourning the death of their spouse to finding love again. The anime also does a excellent job of portraying everyday life in 1980s suburban Tokyo. While the jokes may grow stale or predictable during a second watch, the romance elements has more than enough depth to make it worth your time revisiting the series. I've been watching anime since the late 80s and Maison Ikkoku stands out as a very unique series with themes relevant to adults.
Excellent commentary about Rumiko Takahashi's underrated masterpiece. Well done.
I'm re-reading the Ikkoku manga for the first time in 20 years, and I'm amazed at how well it holds up. Thanks for making this video, there aren't a lot of people talking about this series anymore, but I think it's Takahashi's best.
I just finished watching this show because I was looking for something to watch after Ranma 1/2. I hope to never forget this show and to rewatch it in time.
. . . . . . . .
For the first half of the series it seemed like Kyoko and Godai's relationship started off too bad to have a fulfilling and realistic connection take place but I am glad I stuck with it.
I liked Ranma 1/2 more than Maison Ikkoku until about halfway through the series and then I changed my mind.
. . . . . . . .
Kyoko's character in the anime (in the Japanese dub) really made me develop feelings for a character like her. I wish to meet a woman who seems as innocent and caring as her. She is a lovely character and it was really touching when she showed how much she cared for Godai.
when is the pivital point when you'd say the show starts to get good
@@daylinhesford3116 I actually just finished rewatching the show again a few days ago. There are several pivotal points that add to the story. I particularly think the story elevates to its best when & after Yagami's character is introduced. Also, when Godai's grandmother is introduced is great as well because she is an awesome and funny character. But the entire story is amazing and truly heartwarming from start to finish.
@@daylinhesford3116 But I wouldn't skip any parts if you're considering watching the show. without the prior context of the whole series, the latter parts don't have as much of an impact
@@spcooper94 yeah I'll watch the full series, just finished all of Rumikos other works. Thanks for the replay btw :)
@@daylinhesford3116 I hope you enjoy it as much as I do. It really might be my favorite show I've ever seen

Pour vie 🙏♥️
I think that this is the masterpiece of romance animes.
It's perfect, because, with enough bad luck, you surely will need to endure this kind of things, to just get your objective.
And, this series can give you A LOT of advices, because some of them actually served me, because i'm in a kind of similar situation as Godai.
This anime deserves so much recognition
I'm from 1976 ... and i watch the animated series when i was 13teen in 1989 and it helps me drive into my first love and serious relationship ( FIRST TIME I LIVE WITH SOMEONE I LOVE ) and also remind me than we always can do the best and better as human being.
i watch first time in 1992 😊
Maison ikoku,is not only a anime,it is all my life since my birth,i love ,i still love and i will love all my life until i die.i get so emotianal when this finish .i can not explain How ,but this anime have make me so emotional so
This is my most favourite anime, it stands out because of the character growth and how relatable they are. I simply love it. And also under rated. Many people don't know about this amazing work.
I love this series, it's so delicate and deep.
Also I read many opinions about this and other older animes as being "poor quality" and "not sharp enough".
And maybe I see their point, but the characters actually blend in with the background and the world they live in, they're not detached.
On many modern series it's like if characters don't belong to the surroundings.
They're so sharp that they seem to be on the scenes, not actually IN them.
This is my favorite anime series of all time.
One of my favorites of all time.
I have started to watch this anime since the lockdown started. I am already halfway through the series. I watch it slowly because I just dont want the series to end : (
This is probably the best anime I have seen with great soundtrack. From the brilliant composer Kenji Kawai, to the upbeat song by Cindy - something in the Air, to mellow ballad love song by Sumi Shimamoto - Yokan
The fact that the anime released in the mid 80s but the content is still relevant in modern day pretty much tells us this show is ahead of it's time.
This manga is so legendary a lot of today's manga and doujin artist are making romcom that has same elements with Maison Ikkoku some of them are
Love Hina
Rent-a-girlfriend
ToraDora
Though some of them have poor writing and only has pure fan service, they released chapters that has huge references paying homage to Maison Ikkoku
Great video! Just finished the series and I'm so glad there's an actual ending and it takes place over 7 years!!!
I wish I could love this. You captured all of it.
And again, watching this left me crying by the end with Alone Again. Thank you for this video....
I cried many times reading this manga...... all the characters are so relatable and their relationship are so well developed I felt like I have become one of the people living in this apartment after finishing the story.
Exactly.
I think we all are a bit tenants of the Maison Ikkoku.
And after all, in the anime, one of the rooms is almost never rent out 🙂
Maison Ikkoku is my all-time favorite series both in anime and manga I picked it up at the right time when I started college and I related so much with Godai. I really wish they release the series on Blu-ray /digital here in the west.
This is my favourite anime of all time
The anime is pretty beautiful. I didn't know it held up so well! I honestly prefer that more stylized anime so I think I watch it.
Awesome. I hope you enjoy it!
my favourite anime of all time, no doubt
Urusei Yatsura was the first anime I ever liked, but I think Maison Ikkoku was the first I ever loved. The combination of goofiness and maturity is nearly unmatched.
I think it would’ve been a little better if it had been a little shorter, but these days 15 volumes is practically a miniseries. 😅
The most beautiful summary on why this series is special to so many people. Phenomenal stuff my man!
Thanks for the kind words!
@@MunchMooreCh can you do Kimagure Orange Road
Yeah, you hit all the right notes of why this manga/show excells in quality, a slow but noticable growt and character development making Godai go from Nice guy(c) to a man with a future that saw Kyoko as a person first, and her making amands with her grief in real time, down to earth style, while also being a time capsule for 80's Japan( the world they inhabit is a real one). While i still give the show a rare 10/10 it cut a lot of material, both in moments and spoken words( too many uhhhhs and ahhhs instead on conrete declarations) to apease the censors.
I loved this anime. I used to read the Manga as a kid
Awesome material :) I love Maison Ikkoku and I love Kyoko ^^

I also love Kyoko and i love her pretty voice.
I learned about this anime in a Facebook group and fell in love with Maison Ikkoku and it's characters

This is the best analysis of Maison Ikkoku, my favorite romance anime.
one of my favorite anime's of all time
This is a very good analysis of one of my favorite anime (Maison Ikkoku). I’m definitely down for more videos like this. Thank you.
I've just finished watching the series, I literally have no words.
Came across this video a few days ago. Put it on Watch Later. Finished the anime this morning. Now watched it. I think you're on point, especially the fact that this series was more like Urusei Yatsura than one might've expected at the beginning!
I'm crying again. It's such a beautiful story
Best anime in the anime industry
nice writing and great researching you've done for such a great anime, massive thanks man, keep up the good work 3>
I wish Viz would re-release the series (similar to how they did with Ranma on blu-ray). Because I've only seen a few episodes from the beginning and I've been wanting to watch the entire series.
ww5.animejolt.com/anime/masion-ikkoku/ You can watch it here
You can torrent download it nyaa. si/view/964314, use qbittorent program to download it. I am currently seeding it. so grab it now, its a must watch anime. Easily one of my favorite
Well, I know this is an older posting, but I too wished Viz would release Maison Ikkoku on BD until I found a BD unofficial release on eBay. I bought it for $219, but you get all 96 episodes plus the movie and the oav. It has the original Japanese and subtitles and also the person that made the BD also included the viz English dub version also in the set. The only one that doesn’t have a English dub is the movie and the oav which does have subtitles. It’s a really good transfer and to me well worth the money. To me it’s cheaper than the ranma 1/2 Blu-ray that I bought which cost me over $300 to collect all 7 BD volumes. For $219 you can’t go wrong.
why is there no reviews of this great show on youtube
Underseen
I remember putting this video on 'watch later' 1 year ago, I forgot completely about this video until today.
I loved the video, munchie, thanks for the video. but still, there are some things I want to comment on.
I think the reason I fell in love with Rumiko Takahashi's work is because of the way she portrayed love. a realistic way of love, but an uncanny way of a story.
For example my favorite Anime, Urusei Yatsura. how many people fell in love with an Alien girl that shocks you because she "loves you"? I think we can't relate to that.
but something we can relate to is love. I learned that in UY love isn't what you choose as a partner, but what both parties believe the one can change too, just because you had some love disasters in the past doesn't mean what destiny gives you is going to be a disaster. that's why i believe genre romance shouldn't be called 'Romance'. because from what I learned Romance is the first feeling we have before Love. we fall in before we actually love someone
the character development of UY is actually the same as Mezon Ikoku. only Godai turns into a better human being while Ataru stays in the same shell he always stood in. (i mean, Ataru did change a little in the series, he for example forgot about his harem for Lum, the reason I still say he didn't got out from his shell is simply that he still 'cheats' on Lum. )
although Godai and Ataru seem the same on paper, on the other hand, Godai progressively grows up in the series (as you stated in the video).
going back to the main reason I'm here. Rumiko loves the genre love and comedy. and from what I saw too. she loves to make something that has the genuine feeling of love with unrealistic characters in a fantasy world. (although her works are not like this anymore).
it's cool to see people still talking about this old anime even after 29 years since the last OVA.
My absolute favourite anime 💖 thank you
best video about the series I've ever seen. Congrats, mate!
I’m a fan of her works. I’m yet to watch this tho great video will start it right away!
I started it. I love it already.
I've watched it five times and I will just say Kyokooo!!!
It's my favorite anime
Omg amazing video wish people would find this channel soon already its been a while and your videos are just amazing
man I didn't know that there was a love hotel scene with godai and kyoko in the manga. I should read it at some point, don't want to miss important things
yeah so I read the love hotel scene and I feel like they should've included it in the anime in some way. it made me realize that they are in fact adults. watching the anime I somehow still saw Godai as a Ronin almost until the very end
also it really emphasizes how much of an obstacle her past relationship with Soichiro is or was
the manga is even better than the anime
checking the plot in wikipedia, i learned the author wished to add more characters, like ranma, but the context limited her so much. I think the easiest way to add more characters would be as simple as this: yusaku desire to be a leader, as a counterpart of the rich jerk and began showing interest for the music, and several classmates scoutted him and make him (aside from being a member of the puppet club) the leader of an orchestra as a trumpeter, and during his wedding, as a tribute and a way of thanking them to the guys playing themes such as these: th-cam.com/video/u8FuOnjGVPk/w-d-xo.html and th-cam.com/video/sCHPjpiPHHw/w-d-xo.html
If you already watched the Animé series, I will recommend to read Manga version. VIZ released the Collectors edition last September. They have 2 volumes available and wil be an upcoming another 2 soon. Manga itself tells more about Maison Ikkoku that never mentioned in Anime.
Really great analyse. It's short but bull's eye. Thank you. :)
What a great review !
Please make a review about ranma 1/2😌😊🥺❤️
This was so well made. Thank you :)
something i didn't like it was the fact yusaku wanted two kids instead of a single daughter. Should and must be twins, each one in the arms of yusaku and kyoko. Haruka (as haruka or may in pokemon) and haruyuki (as haruyuki arita in accel world). As well as the fact of their lifes as parents, and of course dealing with the troupe. there are two live actions specials of 2007 and 2008 with real actors: taiki Nakabayashi as yusaku and misaki ito as kyoko, showing the perspectives of each of the parents to their kids
Great video!
The manga is incredible, shame Nikaido was only animated in the movie and not the anime
Wow I remember the series wrong. I only remember they were riding a bus and Kyoko thought they were so tense because they had no skin ship so she just took him to a love hotel. I don't remember that not working. This series begs a re-watch
In the anime it doesn't happen, that's only in the manga 🙂

Are there any more stuff that was only in the manga
@munchie64 just a quick question if you don't mind - did you take the footages from the Blu-Ray or from the CD?

How this video has so less view😓
As a long-time biased fanboy of Maison Ikkoku, I trully loved your review and analysis of this awesome heartwarming anime which is, and will probably always be, my favorite anime.
I agree wholefuly with you on the impact of "growing up" for Godai, his change over all the serie is quite interesting.
However, for Kyoko, I do think that at the end of the story, she became too "docile", too "yamato nadeshiko", that her stuborness disapeared completely and that's a bit of a shame. The "love triangle" was a great problematic bound together with her problem of moving on her dead husband, but after the triangle is resolved, she becomes too weird for my taste ; where is that stuborn Kyoko that made Godai genuinely fear her ?
It's weird because the serie was going straight ahead for a gender equality argument ; Godai, despite what he is inclined to do and what people around him tells him to do, learns to respect Kyoko and consider her as a person first and foremost rather than as an attractive woman. Kyoko reverting back to the "docile" partner seems like taking a step back.
I just finished the whole series tonight. What do you mean about Kyoko reverting back to being docile?
@@spcooper94 Nice! Hope you had fun with this show!
Well at the end of the series (around episode 92, when Godai and Kyoko began to "be a thing"), I think that Kyoko lost all her stubbornness, her jealousy, or whatever you would call that made her to be this fearsome woman that Godai would fear to disappoint or make angry. She became a bit of a submissive wife, which I think is a bit of shame.
The manga did this a tid bit more justice.
Wouldn't you agree?
@@monsieurpapillon810 I didn't read the manga, I only watched the anime. I can see where you're coming from but I can see why Kyoko became less stubborn and jealous to.
@@spcooper94 you should read it.... The anime is so censored it's crazy... The approch of sex is very bold for a show from the 90's I always loved the anime but I just finished the manga and it is 10000 times better
@@cesarbrad286 It's actually from the '80's. But that's interesting because I was under the impression that the anime was really well made for its time.
It has good music and really great Japanese voice acting (the English dub sounded too terrible to get into so I watched it in Japanese with subs). Yotsuya, Kyoko, Mrs. Ichinose, & Akemi all have amazing voice acting that really accentuate their personalities, which I really enjoy (especially with Kyoko and Yotsuya).
What are some things that got censored in the anime and what else do you think makes the manga better?
Hi very good video !!☺️
