The song was about a Scottish soldier who went to war in a foreign land and knew he was going to be killed
He asks his former lover to get a piece of land to bury him. The herbs were traditionally buried with corpse and the cambric shirt was a type of seamless linen shroud used way back then
Once knowing that the song makes a bit more sense

The roots of "Scarborough Fair" trace as far back in time as 1670. In terms of pop music, Simon & Garfunkel went into deep time on this one, and pulled it off with style!

When Paul Simon lived her in england in the early 60s, he heard the "Scarborough Fair" part of the song from Martin Carthy, and asked if Martin would teach it to him, (guitar parts as well). Then after he got back to the states he recorded it with Art, and they added their interpritation of an American folk song to it "The Side of a Hill" (which was an anti-war ballad)" Which they called Canticle. The blending of the two songs (although having almost no lyrical relivence with each other) made the song bigger musicely, with the question and answer format going through out. This song gives you chills, and never gets old.

Paul Simon learned this from the great English folk singer Martin Carthy in the 1960s (there are some additional verses). The tasks are meant to be impossible

I have always loved this song and this was an absolutely fabulous reaction by you, Blessing! I loved that you wanted to go back and listen to it a second time and I loved how mesmerizingly struck you were with it. It is a hauntingly beautiful canticle and feels like you are taken to another reality when listening to it. Your reaction was very much like mine was the first time I listened to it. Great reaction, Blessing! And here's to your next one! 🙏😊❤️

All the history and context are cool, but let's not forget that these guys are essentially singing two songs at once. That's what is amazing to me.

The cover to this song by Celtic Women was incredible. The cover by Celia Pavey on The Voice Australia was just beautiful.

I've always seen this as just so heartbreaking and poignant. In my mind, it's a soldier who's been sent far away from his true love to the frontlines somewhere in some forgotten time, and he's reasonably sure that he's not going to make it out alive.
It's historically the rich and powerful that send the poor young men off to die for campaigns and causes that who even knows what the importance of it is once time has gone by.
He's got a friend, perhaps wounded, who is being sent home and he's from at least regionally where the soldier is from and so as he is polishing his gun, he's asking this fellow soldier that if he goes to Scarborough Fair, could he find his original true love and deliver this message to her, after they were so horribly and forcibly separated to send him off to war and likely to die.
I'm not sure, but he seems to be saying that he wants to convey that he loves her so much and that once he dies, if she could find a really beautiful place to bury him, then he would know that they were truly reunited.

I had just finished a gig in Waikiki and some Japanese tourists came up to say hello (neither of us spoke the other's language). One played the guitar so I handed him mine and he played Scarborough Fair. It was beautiful and actually easy to learn.

The first person voice in this song isn't that he's making up obstacles for the lady that she can never reach. He's telling her that he's going to die In war and thus they will never be together regardless of her efforts. This is actually a Vietnam era war protest song.

This version is from the movie soundtrack of "The Graduate" - that's why the song gets repeated.
It is also slightly different from the normal single & album version towards the end.

Living in Yorkshire Scarborough is a regular haunt but having lost a whole fish and chips to a gang of ninja seagulls I this song to calm down. It's a traditional English folk song dating from Henry VIII.

How wonderful that you discovered this masterpiece, thank you Blessing. 😊 The precise title is actually "Scarborough Fair/Canticle". As a youngster, I had to research the definition of canticle, a word that fascinated me. I was intrigued by your use of good descriptive vocabulary, ie polyvocals and Gregorian Chants. I respectfully disagree a little bit, just for the sake of polite conversation. 5his can certainly be described as "medeival", but Gregorian has a more specific definition. I'm not trying to be pedantic, again, I mean this as simply thought-provoking. My (adoptive) sister was a soprano with the New York Oratorio Society, which specialized in performing Baroque Era music. Hence, I was constantly exposed to very specific definitions of music genres.
For a sample of Art Garfunkel's exquisite vocals as a soloist, I invite you to try his recording titled, "All I Know".

Traditional folk music often was meant to deliver a cryptic political message. These characters are not necessarily who they seem to be. They could be hidden identities of high officials or rich/powerful aristocrats. Or heck, maybe it is just a love song.

you shouldn't hear this piece alone, but in the entire context of Mike NIchols' THE GRADUATE (1967, in which a very young Dustin Hoffman is seduced by her promised bride's mother Anne Bancroft)), with MRS. ROBINSON, THE SOUND OF SILENCE and others; in addition, SF appeares in all the film as a interlude.....

WOW! You look otherworldly today MsPen.
Goes with the tune somehow, like you might be someone I'd see at the village marketplace in an alternative uni...
If you dig beautiful folk voices, I strongly encourage checking out Joni Mitchell's live performance for the bbc in 1970: th-cam.com/video/dAxjPfWOiqI/w-d-xo.html YT has the tunes individually as well, BUT the whole thing is amazing IMO.
    Peace&Love

He has had to bury a child killed in war. His heart or his body has died and he cannot go back to his ONCE TRUELOVE. He is eiher a broken man or his ghost. Not much empathy for men's plight if you miss this.
