Performed by Lin Chufa (林初发) of the First Company of Guangdong Chaoju Academy (广东潮剧院一团).
This is Chaozhou (Teochew) opera in its most traditional form. The 70-minute act involves only two actors, and the roles make exacting demands of their performance skills. Featured here is the opening aria by the male lead, Gao Wenju (高文举), played by Lin Chufa.
"Sao Chuang Hui" (扫窗会), literally means "Reunion Through Window Sweep" - it's adapted from the legendary tale of a peasant woman (Wang Jinzhen) who goes in search of her husband who has been forced to wed the daughter of an ifluential minister. She eventually makes her way to the household of the minister, masquerading as a servant, and finds an opportunity to meet her husband through a window cleaning task.
In this scene, Gao Wenju (高文举) is alone in his study as he looks to the distant mountains and reflects on the events that lead to his present state. He has sent word to his wife but not received any reply. He has also been coerced into another marriage with the daughter of the corrupt minister, and he feels utterly rotten.
