Lin Yanyun, currently one of the leading actresses of the First Company of the Guangdong Academy of Chaozhou Opera (广东潮剧院一团), specializes in xiaosheng (小生, young man) roles. Despite her gender, she cuts a fine figure, playing roles of either young scholars or dynamic warriors very convincingly.
This aria is taken from the classic tale of "Bao Lian Deng" (The Magic Lotus Lantern 宝莲灯). She plays the role of the protagonist Liu (刘彦昌), who falls in love with a fairy who is later forcefully taken away from him. She is punished for falling in love with a mortal being and held captive in a cave. He misses her dearly and recalls the good times they have spent together.
A sorrowful and moving aria, requiring very good voice control.
