I got on TH-cam to check if there were any videos to help me with back/hip discomfort when driving. So glad I found this vid. Thank you for that info. Very helpful.
I started driving a year ago and I cant find the right position, Im having wrist pain, knee pain, shoulder, etc, everytime I make adjustments I fix some, something else hurts 😢 frustating
Really good advice, I've been using an adittional lumbar support like this for a few years, I can't sit in a car without one, if I do a get sciatic pain and numbness in my left foot in minutes. Also nice to see a sciatica video where they are not trying to sell something. Thumbs up.
Great video and advice. I thought it was my varicose veins bothering me when I drove but I’ve had them treated over the last year. I remembered when I was diagnosed with a degenerative disc and compressed spine, I was told I had sciatica that ran down my left leg. The sciatica pain is exacerbated by lifting heavy objects which my job entails, lifting wooden pallets throughout the day in excess of 50lbs aggravate my back and in turn my sciatica, which has been hindering my driving ability to a large extent. I just found this video today and plan on using some of the tips you spoke of to help alleviate my symptoms. Thanks so much!
I've been doing it full time for about 2 weeks now and I've been having unpleasant pains. But now after watching a couple videos, I'm gonna try and use these tips for my driving. I've never stretched so much man....hopefully this works.
Thanks for the comments Driving with LBP & sciatica is challenging and your guidance is excellent ( in my case I found increased cushioning on the seats helped & will try the roll ! idea ) Kia soul SUV is ok in terms driving & seating position but swapped the 18 inch low profile tyres for 16 inch wheels made ride a lot of softer. Tip to think ahead take breaks get out of car etc 👍💯
Public transportation worker. My bus has a 1 size fits all seat. Pumping the break and gas pedals all day when stops are requested is getting to my lower back and my knee (back of it)
Lol I liked this video before I even watched it and I stand corrected. You pulled out that first item. I had a visions of that yesterday without even knowing it exists.
I went to five Below and purchase "My favorite Multi Level Back Stretch to place an my lower back. It provides the arch support that is evenly distributed. I also purchase the "Series Fitness Deep Tissue Foam roller" I used that to place it behind my neck. I noticed that the back support increases the distance between the head and the head rest. That roller gives you neck support. If it wasn't there the released tension that the back nolonger has is now transfered to the back of the neck.
From a physical therapist point of view can you make video as far as the driving position is concerned for those that have knee issues like runners knee etc. My right knee is killing me and can’t find a driving position that really gives me comfort. Great video !!!
Hi! I noticed that in most videos like this, that the knees are slightly above the hips..my car has no seat tilt option, and the default setting has my knees slightly lower than my hips..I get incredible back pain from driving this new vehicle only 5 minutes into my drive..I’ve tried so many different things and nothing has helped..could it be because my hips are higher than my knees? Thank you for taking the time to post this video!
Very informative. I have a roll that resembles the one you used in the video. I’m gonna give It a try. I’m 38 and in great shape. I noticed tightness and pain around left lower side of back right about my butt. I never go on long drives but it hit me fast when I was in my SUV for an hour. I had to pull over and stretch twice for my drive which was 3 hours. Do you have any videos for stretching your lower back? I can’t figure out a stretch that works. Thanks!
I notice in the video that your thighs are fully supported by the seat bottom cushion. I'm finding that all too many new sedans and SUVs have very short driver's seat bottom cushions - sometimes supporting only about half of the thighs. I find these seats terribly uncomfortable.
Thank you so much for your advice. I'm seriously considering trading my low car for something that's a little higher. In the meantime, I'll try the lower lumbar support.
I have 4 herniated discs. the only thing that relieves my pain when driving is the Build-a-Posture cushion sets. I can drive for hours at a time with this cushion set and not feel pain.
Great video! Thanks a lot doc. My lower back hurts because I work as a delivery driver and the car I use has a VERY stiff clutch pedal (is hard to push. A little drive you might not give it much importance but driving it 5 hours a day I definetely feel is causing me stress to the lower back) Do you think that the more I sit closer to the pedals the less pressure will be applied to the back and more to the legs? Do you think you can avoid lower back damage if you sit close enough no matter if the clutch is very stiff?
My car has a lumbar support. But it hasn't helped.so far but this sounds worthwhile. Sometimes I think some of it is in my head. If I just sit in my car without it running it doesn't hurt as soon as if I'm driving in traffic.
Stumbled upon this video today as I'm about to embark on a driving job. Thx for the advice. I may have missed a comment that might answer my question but if I may, how thick does that towel or t-shirt need to be. Also any other useful tips would be appreciated
Great topic ! Awesome tips I have been using empty water bottles for support , it’s convenient and always available . I also use 🎾 balls in a sock 🧦 and it’s sometimes very deep amd more than I need and usually leave somewhere else so I’ll end up using empty bottles !! Hey nice video. Can u suggest something to maintain horizonal line between knees and hips. Mostly car seats hav lower height at hips and higher towards the knees, this causes stress on tailbone. I m looking something to keep it straight plz advise.
I only have pain in my right hip and it just started up again after having to start driving again. Do you have any suggestions of what I should do. I do have a history of herniated disc of up to 7 millimeters on my left and 4 millimeters on my right that was diagnosed eight years ago. My activity level has increased greatly over the last year but I was taking the bus and having to walk a lot. Now that my schedule has been changed I had to start driving again and all the sudden all the pain came back just in my right hip
What about the butt ? It really hurts my low back to drive . Cannot get my seat just right on the bottom. It’s very hard and if I tilt it to where my legs go down in the front a little bit, it feels better. I am looking for a good seat pad to sit on that might relieve some of the discomfort. Any suggestions? Thank you for the video. The rolling up of things doesn’t really work for my low back because I am very petite. I would like a nice lumbar patient for a petite person as well.
What do I do when I have a base SUV . I'm the second owner, not knowing that the dip in the seat to the back support is what causes all the pain. Any suggestion. Also I do have a foam roll that I will use but my butt needs to be a lot higher. I bought a 3" seat cushion but it does not lift your tailbone up. Do you have any suggestions? I will be going on a four hour drive in January 2019. Please help with any suggestions if you can, so much appreciated.
Well useful advice. however it might be "easier" to not have pain in cars with such high driving position. I would be glad to find on youtube somebody trying to explain the right driving position on cars such as Bmw or Mercedes (sedans/coupe/wagon) with that idiotic floor-hinged accelerator and rock-hard and low seats. I've been suffering right leg pain since day one i got my C class Merc. Might sell the car just for this. And I'm a 26yrs old with no issues...(already did all the medial visits rx etc required..). I mean 90% of the "right driving positions" on youtube are not doable on cars with almost "vertical" pedals..

You basically talked about someone's back but you didn't one time talk about their hip pain or or go in-depth about sciatica. Because if you had of you would have basically went over how to adjust the seat which would be moved to nose and a seat down and the ass of the seat up to keep you more flat on the seat. Which takes the pressure off your hips and sciatic nerve. I could not sit in that truck the way you have that seat peered I don't know how you sit with the nose of the seat way up in the air. That puts your butt in a hole and puts a lot of pressure on your sciatic nerve and your hips. Which in turn I would have to have a seat wedge the hike my butt up. But these car companies are so goddamn stupid they don't know how to build a seat anymore
That is exactly right. I'm 5'2" and can not get comfortable in my husband's new truck with these bucket seats. Too low in butt and too high in knee area, got sciatica for 1st time in my life riding in his truck. SUX!
