    Be sure to turn the flywheel to bottom dead centre after each heat cycle, so it cools with the piston at the bottom. Also, get a nice bit of filter oil. Love the content as always Tomley, thanks for giving Nitro some love, we need all the help we can get. Power to you! Also make sure you can always see the blue smoke of unburnt oil, which is needed to lube the piston.

    I remember trying Nitro with an OFNA 1/8 buggy. Never got it started, the hobby shop couldn't get it running. They even put a brand new engine that was much nicer than the RTR and it wouldn't start. Finally after tinkering with it for about a week and the shop not having any luck, it was returned. I took that money and bought RC10T4 RTR. That experience was enough to turn me off from trying nitro again. With that said, I think it would be a ton of fun to try again.
    Surely, it was bad luck but to be honest, I never knew about the break in procedures and likely would've ruined the buggy, so perhaps it was for the best at the time.

    Nice. The sound and the smoke is what it's all about. Battery stuff is SO boring. Tinkering is part of the fun. Don't lean it out too much, it will overheat and destroy the engine. I have to drive over 30 miles to a place where I can run my off road buggy. You'd need a truckload of charged batteries to get much run time out of a battery powered one. With nitro you can run it for hours, no batteries, no chargers. Just have several filters with you. In the sand they get dirty fast.

    That engine on the FTX offroad vehicles starts so easy as long as it's primed, it's always worth checking the idle gap as that is usually set a little on the slow side. Actually it's better to keep the engine warm when running in but not over heating. Your idle is a little low which is why it's trying to cut out

    • @TomleyRC
      @TomleyRC  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I increased the idle a little in the end. Works better now

Just waiting for some air filter oil to arrive then going to run it in. Brucy bonus for me is I found an RC track just 5 minutes away from me at Shoreham airport. Looking forward to trying it out

  • @ciarancdc
    @ciarancdc ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Tuning depends lot on the fuel you're using, if you're using fuel with a high oil content like 18 or 20% (optifuel) then you need to tune for more smoke than fuel that has around 10%.
    Type of oil is important too, synthetic doesn't give the same protection as castor oil. You want some castor oil in the fuel because it gives better high heat protection and leaves a slight varnish inside your engine which makes it live longer.
    If the fuel has no castor oil in it I think you should always run the engine richer than fuel with castor oil even if there's more oil in the fully synthetic fuel

    Nice, it runs fine, and tuning is pretty decent. For “drifting” is good with the single speed, but in parking lots or track use for better speed and not ask constantly full rpm from the engine, the 2 speed conversion is a must have.

    Hey there Phil, never hold full throttle on a nitro, when you get to full throttle, back it off to half or so for a second or two then go up to full throttle for a wee second or two, then rinse and repeat and your engine will last for a long time, don’t forget to put after run oil in it when you’re finished driving it. Niiiiiiiiiiice video Phil, really enjoyed it.😊

      what are u talking about? There is absolutely nothing wrong about driving a nitro car like this with full throttle&rpm fully normally. even ten* second straight on a track does not kill engines like this. (ok ten seconds is lonh and not often you see that long straights on tracks but they dio exist. I mean go look proper competition races, no matter if its 1 or 2 speed gearbox, EVERYBODY will keep it pinned on the longest straight and it doesnt do any damage as long as your lubrication is working. co me on man..

    Yes, all "fuel" engines should be run a little rich specially 2 strokes because the lube is in the fuel. More lube is better than less lube. PLUS the fuel is also used to cool the engine. Too lean and it will run too hot and while "heat is horsepower" too much heat is death.

    Today Nitro really does play second fiddle to electric performance capability wise. Also their performance hasn't really got much better in the past 40 years. However in competition nothing approaches it challenge wise with 1/2 hour and 1 hour races. It is also still the premier class for on road racing.
    That Banzi looked like a great car to get a feel for on road use but it did sound like it was desperately short geared. It would depend on the track but I think it could do with at least one more tooth on the clutch bell may be two and or 3~5 less on the main gear. The way I used to tune a 2 speed in the 80's was set top gear as the optimal gear ratio peaking just before the first brake on the straight then set first to still get decent 2nd gear acceleration.
    A great review, Never enough info around for total newbs re nitro and especially the included manual seemed like some very good advice.

    Little tip for first time engine startup, screw the glow plug on all the way but dont tighten it yet, prime the fuel to fill up the lines and carb, then back out the glow plug 1-2 turns before trying to start it. 0nce started tighten the glow plug on and your startups will be easier from then on.
    Compression on a new engine is usually high, as the rings havent seated in yet, so it struggles to startup. After first startup rings seats in with that initial tank idle run in.
    The air fuel ratio should be slightly rich so that you get that initial plume of smoke, but thins out. and for high speed you want to carry that same amount of smoke plume. Safer to runner it on the richer side than leaner side, as lean means less lubricant going in, and engine will runner hotter, and eventually warp the cylinder, seize rings or bearings.

    Leaning the low needle will cure the annoying stall you get when touching the throttle.
    This seems really low geared - like 1st is in a 2 speed gearbox. I’d upgear it for sure. It should be capable of 40mph easy with the .18 motor. Great vid 👍
    Oh put a nylon pipe on the exhaust outlet well clear of the bodywork, it will help stop the dirt build up 👍

    From experience you NEVER touch the low speed from factory unless it's a very serious problem, you could spend hours if you get this even slightly wrong! Planes, Cars and Helis. Nitro rocks when it's in tune, if your going to commit spend £20 odd quid on a rotor start backplate and use a drill if you have one or buy a rotor starter. Pull starting is awful once it loses tune (and it will, a 10C temp change can be enough, especially for ease of starting)

  • @killmz
    @killmz 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

    @TomleyRC If you lean out the low speed a bit the engine won't fill up with fuel that easily while idling for longer (while refilling or waiting stationary) will also accelerate a bit faster. Also when u idled for more than 30 sec you should start the car with less than half throttle so it wont stall than it will be fine afterwards.

    All of my stuff is electric. I would like to try out a nitro Rc car one day though. My only experience with nitro was with a couple of old Cox .049 motors from line control planes. The noise.....once I got them started I kinda wished I hadn't.

    I've tried nitro a couple of times, and it's always ended in frustration. Watching this video makes me want to try again.

    • @muskokamike127
      @muskokamike127 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You're frustrated because you're impatient. Follow the instructions. 99% of your issues will be solved.
      Way back in the day I ran a ton of cox .049 engines when I was a kid. Soon as you read the instructions ALL the problems were solved. Then I bought a kyosho nitro corvette. Couldn't get it started. Read the instructions, started on the third pull, and did everything right and it is still running great after 20 years.
      First thing is make sure your ignitor is charged, and secondly, get the freaking wheels off the ground. I see KT firing them up with a foot holding the car down and the wheels on the ground then wonder why it won't start. That's like wondering why you can't walk with your legs tied together.
      Next most important thing? Get the right fuel. Too much lube=it won't fire Not enough lube=it will burn up.

    • @benbekemeier5545
      @benbekemeier5545 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Muskoka Mike I was totally impatient. I was also trying to run a car I bought used with zero documentation or experience. I've grown since then and would probably be more successful today.

    All the nitro bashing is fair enough and I don’t use mine anymore because electric is easier, but, nitro offers something which electric cannot. It’s a real engine after all that makes noise and smells and exhaust smoke! If you haven’t tried it and you’re at all curious, then I recommend you try it. Even if you end up putting on a shelf afterwards.
