I had this guide as a kid! My family was too poor to have an N64, so I bought this guide (I think for $10) and read it every night. It was a really high quality print. Using the pictures to imagine playing the game was the closest I could get, but it was still quite fun for me :)

The editing makes it seem like the direction you get blown off was what made the hat appear on the snowman. But what really happened is Simply reset his console after getting his hat blown off.
Will it work on the Switch version or no?
I actually knew about the snowman hat because our copy of Super Mario 64 was a used copy with preexisting saves and one of them had a 70 star file that was missing his hat. Given how cryptic the entry to Snowman's Land is, it took me so long to finally find and retrieve the lost hat of that particular Mario.

In the first Bowser level, my Mom was playing with me and she tried crawling up the blue slope near the beginning. I kept saying "that won't work" until I slowly realized it was working and she outsmarted me.
To clarify: the texture at 8:08 with the Bob-Omb is in front of the stone bridge right at the entrance to the mountain path (the one with the 1-up and the button)!
I'm only 8 months late, but I found it funny that the time stamp of 8:08 looks like "BOB".
I think the thing about "wailing at the wall" might be a terrible reference to the Wailing Wall, more commonly known as the Western Wall, which is a super important historical location in Jerusalem

Yeah I remember when they taught us about theologically significant places in Israel in elementary school. Later when reading the Mario guide at home I had a right pleasant chuckle about the reference.
The first time I went to Snowman's Land, I got yeeted, didn't realize Mario's hat was missing and got the bully star instead.
When I went back in to get the hat, the snowman had it and I had no idea how to kill them so I just gave up on it.
I remember doing the same thing, and then years later, I actually read the signs that tell you to spin around them.

Apparently, you can actually beat the piano using glitches. I'm not sure how it works but one of them involves using menu storage when the menu asking if you want to leave the level after getting a star comes up. So, technically, it wasn't lying. You just had to break the game.
The bob-omb picture with the weird texture looks like it is in bob-omb battlefield, it's the stone bridge right at the base of the mountain. You cross it to get to a wall of bars with a gap that leads to the area with three balls rolling back and forth. Underneath, there is a switch that opens a gate at one side of the underpass, along with a 1-up and a red coin.
19:47 that's gotta be a Ren and Stimpy reference. In the episodes there was occasionally this skit commercial for a kids toy called "log". Like a mr potato head/doll parody.
Great video, I remember I had a 100% save file and I thought it was glitched because I could not figure out how to get my hat back. I checked klepto and the monkey, I was so surprised when I finally figured out the snowman had it
7:00 this happened to me when I was a kid and I'm so glad I finally see it referenced somewhere else I was never able to get my hat back because every time you approach the snowman he rises up.
And nobody ever believed me but here we are!
I'm a month late to your comment and an entire childhood away from getting your hat back, but you defeat those snowmen by running circles around them. They get dizzy and poof away leaving behind a coin, and your hat.

I knew about the snowman hat cuz it was in 64 DS. DS also has an infinite hat glitch involving the snowman that can crash the game.
There was one time when I was a kid that I lost Mario's hat in SL. I think the it blew somewhere inaccessible, so I couldn't pick it back up off the ground. I remember trying to reset the game, but it was still gone. Eventually, I found it on one of the snowmen. Cool little thing they included.

and as a kid I always liked maps like rainbow cruise, TTC, and TTM, but when I was finally old enough to play through the game on my own HMC is what blew me away. Every other level feels like a glorified obstacle course after playing hazy maze cave. There's just something really engrossing about it in a casual playthrough.
I like how you've been playing this game forever and your an expert but you never seen the snowman with a hat, and still this game showing you new content doesnt phase you

The photos were typically taken with a film camera, underneath a blackout screen, with a CRT television. That should help explain the screenshots. Nintendo typically provided minimal assets for these guides before the GameCube/GBA era and companies like Nintendo Power had to work with what they could make.

this reminds of when the first time speedrunner got a certain banana coin in dk64, lots of people including myself and fam found the banana coin in our childhoods but it took a long time before it was first collected on a stream with a lot of people watching and it made big news, its kinda a tease when u already know about stuff like this and then its suddenly news like nobody ever knew about it
I have an old guide where there supposedly was a trick where Mario was walking on top of water and I've actually never seen that even with Gameshark back in the day.
Maybe it meant by riding a Koopa shell?
@@Franzeco333 No, a picture showed Mario was shown standing on top of the water as it was a floor on the outside of Peach's Castle (near the cannon that opens after you get 120 stars).

I can't believe there's an official Nintendo Power Player's Guide for Super Mario 64 that says you can defeat Bullet Bills and the Mad Piano, and everyone tried it and said "guess they lied?" However, when more sources than I can list confirmed Luigi was not in the game, they collectively all went mad. Some remain in denial to this day... although, they are in luck because the DS remake and mods are a thing now.
