    Dear Jordan,
I have been binge watching your content for quite some, mainly due to Mentalhealth struggles and to build strength in this harsh world. You have sincerely touched my heart and soul. Why? Because knowing there are people out there acknowledging, pursuing and living by truth, instead of this diluted facade of a world which is tearing my hope and heart apart, guides me in every aspect towards light and clarity. And helps me maintain that clarity on reality.
    My wife is expecting,
and you inspire me to become a great father every day. I was not raised by truth, rather by standards that flaws are bad and the world is perfect. Which has been eating me alive for the past 5-10 years (I'm 30)
You give us hope by truth.
Don't forget yourself, and take care kind soul

@@danieltouma5975 It's heavy reading + listening, it's his seminal book and makes his two recent books a cake walk. PS congratulations on the upcoming baby. If I were to order his videos I would say watch his Maps of Meanings videos from 2017, followed by the 1-20 Biblical series as I like to call it (that sh*t changed my life), then 12 Rules for Life followed by Beyond Order (books), then the Maps of Meaning audible, and then all of these videos since they're current and up to date. I listen to these videos and if I'm anywhere near what JP is laying down, I am so far from earning my wisdom and I've done the aforementioned that we're at risk of just regurgitating him. Not saying you or I do this but we all know someone who can just regurgitate

First time ever commenting on any video of Jordan Peterson and that's after first watching him back in 2016. I honestly think this is one of the best dialogues he's ever had. The quality of this highly intellectual discussion and the breadth of the topic areas while being tightly anchored to the central theme is truly remarkable.
Karl Friston is in a league of his own. Possibly on a similar level to Iain Mcgilchrist and John Vervaeke. It was such a great surprise to see this pop up on my feed.
Keep up the amazing content Jordan and I really hope you have a meeting set up with Michael Levin. That's the one I'm waiting for🤞

    • @advocate1563
      @advocate1563 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

We love all the same thinkers. Macgilchrist iis outstanding and such a polymath. Loved Vervaeke on Fridman - very lucid and clear. Levin is an absokute supersrar. How has he not already been awarded a Nobel prize. He's turning biology on its ears.

    • @nathancurry7944
      @nathancurry7944 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@advocate1563 very true. This 'wee corner' of the internet is steadily building traction and is certainly providing one of the best environments for the best ideas to take shape and flourish. Mcgilchrists work is tantamount to a complete paradigm shift in many ways. His most recent book 'The Matter with Things' is truly extraordinary.
Agreed, Vervaekes discussion on Lex was awesome. If you haven't already, I highly recommend his recent Oxford lecture and his 50 part series called 'Awakening from the Meaning Crisis'.
As for Levin, the first time I was exposed to his work I literally was speechless. The implications are going to permeate the whole through not only science in general, but it opens up some really interesting questions which speak to the Platonic forms and also possibly Rupert Sheldrakes idea of morphic resonance etc. In any case, these conversations are at that edge and are highly stimulating.

@@danielfoliaco3873 thanks for this. His free energy principles is very interesting for sure. It would definitely be good to see if it could be applied to psychotherapy etc like you have said. What's notable is that John Vervake wasn't mentioned once in this discussion and as you have pointed out already, his idea of relevance realisation is central to this whole conversation. At least one thing is for sure, you know you're on the right path if some of the best minds on the planet are each arriving at very similar, if not identical positions independently of the others.

I’m at 9:52 and this is so interesting!
To build on JP’s thoughts at this point - it would appear to me that the process flow is more something like this:
    1) Desire creates motivation to take action
    2) To inform the required action we go to an action-outcome model that predicts likely scenarios based on prior knowledge (ie expectation) and an action is selected based on the shortest distance between desire and predicted outcome
    3) The action is passed through a values filter and a risk filter (why most men won’t just pounce on the lady in the example). If the action doesn’t pass the filters we go back to step 2.
    4) An action is taken and an outcome is perceived. Now here is where a surprise might occur. However as alluded to by JP, that could be a result of a perception/interpretation issue, or an error in the outcome prediction model (expectation).
    5) The model is adjusted as required.
Note: Desire/motivation are not necessarily required to generate surprise. The models are also adjusted through passive observation of other cause and effect interactions and also probably through sheer imagination in some cases (although the latter may build models that are more likely to require adjustments).
    Just my thoughts…

Thank you for sharing this content! One thing I think that is so common and induces masses of individuals into depressive states are the degrees to which their own experiences of the world were subverted by the antagonism and false narrative hierarchy that they are/were subjugated to underneath their parents, in tandem with all forms of emotional and mental imposition of imputed forms of self-hatred and self-contempt that are received in their formative years from any and all individuals who are consumed by an unfettered narcissism and hatred for them. It is these children who have had their own personality and selfhood subsumed by the need to create a personality/mask that replaces their identity as the archetypal scapegoat for their parents and/or society's machinations in order to deplete their adversaries psychic energy and enable a semi-transient state of 'peace' that should have otherwise been there. I am also convinced that this is where addictions to drugs, food, sex, and other manifold items really soars for these individuals, as these individuals as they mature and go through life continue to employ a depersonalized persona to seek out peace amongst others of a more marked self-interested disposition, and in doing so are then tasked with facing the void of existence without any genuine empathy or compassion from any other individual in their life as their marked awareness of genuine empathy and compassion is inherently more capable of sifting through expressions of compassion and empathy and seeing them as merely just expressions and not genuine forms of compassion that reach past the veil of their own projected identity that the outside world sees. This is then further compounded in a society that continues to celebrate the crucifixion of individuals upon their shortcomings in meeting varying forms of societal expectations and have these shortcomings further imputed to them due to the ways in which they have failed to be responsible for their own selves, when in reality this is something that they have clearly been deprived of in many instances due to the inherent nature of their brains structure as it was ingrained into them within their upbringing. This isn't to suggest that this is something that is inherently static nor am I suggesting that we should enable individuals in dysfunctional behavior, but I am saying that the most potent way that society will be enabled to rise from the dredges is through the manifestation of genuine forms of empathy and compassion that are void of pity for them, and that genuinely treats them as individuals - something that I think is the key to why so many have taken an interest to your videos Dr. Peterson. Too many machiavellians in society continue to use such individuals to their hearts content, often times in the guise of morality or of respectability, without any interest in which ways the hierarchies found within the strictures of societal expectations have contributed to these individuals being buried in these terrible mountains of complexes and states of dysregulation without the opportunity to regulate themselves and to rightly order their own emotions and well-being seeing as society commonly foists upon such individuals the narrative that peace is to be pursued at all costs, even to one's own sense of self. This is why identity crises are the primary underpinning of the masses in our day as they are literally the manifestations of the millions of masks that so many in their childhood were forced to forge in order to subsume their identity in a way which would enable them to maintain the peace in their own household. I am also convinced that this is why the complexes of victimhood status are the pre-eminent underpinnings of the ideological territory that continues to disrupt the Apollonian realms of society that continue to expect all persons in their purview to genuinely value and appreciate all 'normal' societal expectations.

Dear Professor Peterson, I am not sure if you will read this but you have my respect and, as I’m sure you have gathered, the respect of thousands if not millions of people around the world. In a recent video I saw of you, you mentioned the phenomenon that a large percentage of men viewed your videos. I can’t speak for all of the men here but for me, that reason is two fold. 1. I agree with a large majority of the opinions I have seen you speak about and come to similar conclusions. Even if I hadn’t put it to words yet. Hearing you, seeing you and at time feelings the emotions and truth from your words is powerful. Powerful enough to capture the attention of people in trouble. People who don’t know how to ask for help and people who believe in the greater good.
    2. I watch you because I think a major turning point in the culture of civilization and how both sex’s view each other AND treat one another will follow the dialogues you have started. Dialogue that most men feel and sympathize with but don’t have your credibility, publicity or even sometimes courage to say. Not only that, but you are well spoken and informed enough to fully realize arguments in defense of those ideals.
You are heavily watched as a phenomenon most people don’t understand fully. You are in a position of power. REAL power. Not some arbitrary election or inherited form of position. But one that was earned through logic, study, uphill mental battles and physical ones at that with your illnesses. You are a very good representation of the people you wish to serve. One under pressure, one struggling, but one with purpose. That classical underdog story of effort, determination and in this case, hopefully, justice. It’s a work of art and one that has captured the attention of those affected by the very injustices you point out.

Absolutely brilliant. I had the pleasure of having Prof. Friston as a guest on my channel. He is such a character! My question is, are we as humans really optimizing until convergence? Because that is the formulation of minimizing free energy, where we minimize until convergence!

So, Jordan, I've be watching and commenting as you've been developing these ideas for a while now. It's really exciting to see a conversation like this where the ideas are developed to the point that two giants of academia can sit down with the material and find so little error within it.

I understood it when Jordan Peterson expressed how people are dying for that reassuring voice, support and someone to motivate them. I am caught up in a situation whereby I need advice and wise words. I registered for a chemical engineering course under the influence of my parents. I also blame myself because I didn't know better and I followed the trends, not really taking the time to discover what would work well for me and my interests, I never took a gap year after high school to think things through and do my research. As such, I failed my first semester but the school allowed me to continue, I don't know how but they did. But now I'm facing problems with my sponsors, mind you I progressed to my second semester, passed it and now I'm doing my second semester, but my government is giving me problems with the sponsorship because they do not understand how I was allowed to progress. And I tried talking to my parents and requested to return home, take a gap year and rethink my choices because I was under a lot of stress and duress and I do not think I'll make it in this degree, but they won't let me. I feel so lost because I'm at the risk of losing my scholarship, my parents won't understand my situation and instead are interested in keeping me in school despite my condition because they bragged about me to a lot of people and cannot afford to be mocked, and I want to change the course and do something I'm compatible with, but I've already wasted my opportunity of sponsorship. I feel stuck and I've lost all hope, and sadly enough I have no one to turn to and talk to about this. I've been searching for sponsorships with no success and so I don't really know what to do anymore. I do have the drive to work, I do have the motivation to do better and change my situation but I lack opportunities, or should I say I don't know where to look. What can I do?

The topic of misaligned self-perception rings very true with what I've been working on revealing. That being placed in special education and labeled with Aspergers both delayed my ability to properly socialize myself which dreadfully tainted me sense of self. Then to give me a label as to associate a word with who I was which is a trap I find most people falling into when they're experiencing either a changing state of perception or one that's hyper-emotionally influenced. Breaking out of that shell isn't so easy given you're often surrounded by people who've grown comfortable around your flawed sense of self-perception. Breaking out of such a shell means making a few unintended enemies as a result.
If it were in my power, I'd demand psychiatrists stop labeling of children completely as the reasons for my diagnosis itself was the result of my chaotic childhood and the treatments worsened something that might've fixed itself naturally. Jordan Peterson simply gives me more ideas in an already chaotic mess that is human psychology and how we come to develop a sense of self. But it's the repression I have to thank for my desire to break through it which was sadly destructive but it didn't kill me. But it kills many who haven't a sliver of the luck I have.

So many people I know can benefit from this discussion....if only they'd internalize it. If not ONLY for the manners displayed and the willingness to listen, ingest, and enjoy each other's opinions for their further elucidation. These two are the epitome of communication....if not also conveyors of pure content.
We should teach PERSPECTIVE in school. For instance.....everyone in the world should know what WILL happen when our sun burns out....and it WILL BURN OUT. Few people ever think about this, yet the average person should know this to have any REAL perspective.
    Another example....
I'm standing on a patch of real estate and calling it a rock...I call it solid...I say I own it. But it's a spot on a tectonic plate moving 1" per year. It used to move 10" a year long ago. It's at a latitude on a globe that is spinning...so add about 610 miles per hour to that 1" a year.
Now consider that the planet is going 41+K mph around the sun, and the sun is going about 500,000 mph around the center of the Milky Way....which is going 1,300,000 miles an hour...away from everything else.
YOU are balanced in the thinnest of probabilities of life...and most of us never learn this. But the FACTS above ARE true...and if you aren't asking "why am I here?" you aren't curious enough.

This is why we need to build a society that can help us prevent basic uncertainties we have not chosen to be born within, such as whether or not one will have enough food and care to minimize free energy wheb they're born. And that has to be a collective narrative shared by everyone.

I once read a book, "Microcosmology 101", that resonated with me. Every person you meet makes an impression of authoritativeness that remains at some level of strength and character within you're being. These are the characters that occupy our internal worlds. Parents are the primary actors we internalize as authorities. They live within us as our internalizations of them; they behave semi-autonomously. They are important memory complexes to which we refer relentlessly in the conduct of our lives. In all of our considerations "they" voice their characteristic opinions for our edification. "My pappy told me 'don't accept any wooden nickels'...so why am I thinking of that right now, as a certain stranger approaches?"...because awareness filters the possibilities with a peculiar alacrity in matching "known" to "unknown" with great accuracy...as if guided by the spirit of truth...

Boy, would I like to spend a few hours talking to Dr. Peterson! I am a clinical hypnotherapist, and have been, for over 21 years. During that time, I have employed parts therapy, or ego state therapy, in order to resolve internal conflicts with my clients. (For those not familiar with parts therapy, it is based on the assumption that if you are engaging in some sort of self-sabotaging behavior, then it is because two or more unconscious 'parts' of you are engaged in an internal conflict.) What I recently concluded is that the methodology of parts therapy can be radically enhanced by addressing each part's perception of the 'world' they reside in, rather than solely attempting to mediate between conflicting parts. Put another away, each part within a person operates with perfect logic (even if the part seems self-destructive) according to how it perceives the psychological world in which it lives. Thus, if a part's logic is fine, then it is that internal world that must change. The question then becomes, "How do we change those separate internal worlds so that the logical responses that naturally arise from them lead to healthy client outcomes?"

Putting youself into Hero's shoes part 43:00ish. . Lots of studies saying that children reading diverse books helps raise them to grow up to be a more mentaly stable adult. The theories say that reading books from multiple POV helps children experience empathy to lots of varying characters and situations, inturn helping them to apply this to the people and current events happening around them. As well as, in my opinion, hopefuly helps them to see the mathimatics of being human, to see the why and how that comes from acting out of love or fear.

Peterson's work has allowed me to view the world as a concoction of Cause and Effect. I think by understanding this more, you can to a degree relatively understand anything. Seeing the world this way has allowed me to be more of a binary decision maker and be more probable with desired outcomes. 🧐

52:37 i wrote my bachelor's thesis about curiosity and you are coming to a really similar if not the same conclusion (about surprise mechanisms) as the information gap theory (which is about the mechanisms of curiosity). it postulates that curiosity is a feeling of deprivation which is caused by the perception of an information gap which one is confident in being equipped to handle and resolve (as opposed to anxiety which is when you don't feel like you could handle the information gap). George Loewenstein came up with the notion that curiosity only stirs up, when the expected reward (the dopamine reward) exceeds the expected effort for resolving the information gap. when i wrote my Thesis i often read that suprising stimuli are one cause for curiosity but when i listen to this here, i am unsure if surprise and curiosity don't refer to the same thing.
