    Once on Habbo Hotel some guy's character walked up to mine and asked "a/s/l?" Pretty standard way to start a conversation so I replied. Then he followed up with "Wanna sex?" Now, I was 14 and kind of intrigued as to how this would go being avatars with set animations. So I agreed and he wandered over to one of the sofas and sat down. I followed suit. We sat in silence for a few moments. Then he began to type short phrases such as "urgh" and "humph" and any other way you could think to type a grunt. I burst out laughing and walked off. He didn't follow. Good times.

    I really find it entertaining/interesting how nostalgic our generation (early - late 20s) is. We sound like middle-aged folks reminiscing on their younger more youthful days, but really we're older youths commenting on our younger youth days lmao. I sometimes think this is why Pokemon GO is so huge rn.. like our nostalgia fueled generation made this a phenomenon.

    • @npwafireball
      @npwafireball 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is interesting. It's like every decade created their own stuff and their own style and culturally everything was always developing. Now for some reason we've just spent this big block of time just going oh wow remember how cool things were in the 80s/90s! Rather than create our own cool stuff. TV and films and other things feed it too, everything is a remake or a continuation of a thing we already used to like

    • @dutyfreecritic
      @dutyfreecritic 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      well lol i mean we did grow up in the 90s.. im basically saying time is moving so quickly now that we're reminiscing on things that happened in like 2005 .. which wasn't thaaaat long ago.

    The MSN days was when I started to use the Internet. Even though I'd spend like 8hrs with my peers at school, we always managed to speak about complete utter shite on MSN.
    It moved onto Bebo. That was THE shit. Giving "luvs", finding your "other half", making "skins" and thinking you're a top notch graphic designer.
    MySpace was pretty popular in my school too. Writing bulletins that were quizzes were truly the highlight of the site for me. I remember "PC4PC" being a thing. You'd write a compliment on someone's pic and be a cheeky bitch and write "pc4pc?xxx" at the end. Ahhh memories. Top 8 friends, don't get me started. Had many fall outs because of that system! I thought I was a such a boss tweaking the code to a theme.
    Piczo was also a thing. Idk if that's considered a social media, but it made me think I was a savvy web designer.
    Everything went downhill when everyone joined Facebook. I find social media boring tbh. I don't get the thrill anymore of visiting Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or Tumblr. I feel like most social medias are the same now. There are no uniqueness anymore.

    • @TG0896
      @TG0896 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hahaha i forgot about "pc4pc". Crazy to think that was acceptable to do and people would happily oblige to do this. Can't say people would do the same now!

    Well I'm 14 and yeah I think there are definitely times when I'm like "why are we trusted with all of this?!" But, I couldn't imagine living any other way having had my entire life so far affected by the Internet so I think now being 14 means a very different thing to why it meant even 5 or 10 years ago

    when i was young we used to use ICQ and i was in a relationship with someone from my class and when i wanted to break up with him, i texted him when he was offline so i wouldnt have to be confronted with the situation. after that i told my friends that i dumped him and i was glad etc but the next day in school he came up to me and was completely normal and everyone asked him why he still talks to me bc i broke up with him yesterday but he was confused and told us that he wasnt online the day before so thats one of my most emberassing stories

Disappointed in your lack of mention of Neopets though hahaha I don't think I would trust myself with the internet these days either and I do sometimes think it's a shame for these 12 year old nows who are on all the social medias but everything they post is going to be there for LIFE. I remember in middle school (8th grade) I had a computer class with my friends but we didn't all sit next to each other so we found a lyric website that had a chat room so we could all instant message each other. (At school, like every website was blocked and it was hard to find a proxy website that didn't get shut down after a day). I also remember meeting someone in the chat room who would always come back day after day at the same time to talk to me

    I used to use 'Stardoll' when I was 9 where you'd just dress up celebrity dolls and create your own space! Paid for the 'superstar' membership on that too...
    ALSO I disobeyed my parents and got Bebo before I turned 13 (they were very aware of age restrictions), and I could only go on it at my friends (because we had just a family computer then)meaning I would often miss out on a lot of the things that were happening with my friends online. :(

    Oh man, the MSN days...
    I remember when I was 14 I tried to help my best friend at the time get a girl to notice him and then pluck up the courage to ask her out, and during that time I developed a crush on him myself. After he "gave up" on her, he said he liked me. So we went out for a whole ~week~ and in school we'd secretly hold hands and then once we got home we'd talk all evening on MSN and then text until we fell asleep.
    But, the girl ended up asking him out, and he broke up with me (on MSN of course) to then be with her.
    The funniest part was that he had taken a beautiful photo of NYC at night when he'd visited there a few weeks before, and while we were "together" he said some cheesy line about me being 'the only thing more beautiful than.... This' and then changed his display picture to that photo. He changed it back a few minutes later.
    So the following week after he'd dumped me and was in a relationship with her, I noticed his display picture change to that photo again and then change back a few minutes later... So he used the same line on her omg.

    It was really interesting watching this as a 15 year old. Especially the bit when you were both talking about whether or not you would trust your younger self online, because I don't think I would trust myself online if I was 15 before 2009. It's weird though, because I think now there is 'rules' about being 'cool' online and somehow you just learn them

    YESSS! All about that msn life. I would do the whole signing off then signing on so my crush would see. Or using special characters and cool song lyrics as my name/message. The most cringe worthy thing I once did is flat out asked a crush if they liked me and claimed it was my friend. Needless to say he saw right through it. Makes me a little sad to know that today's youth will never know our struggles.

    Remember when MSN had video chat but there wasn't any audio (or I didn't have any because I didn't have a mic) so it was just instant messaging plus video which is just super weird, but the web cams were these massive chunky things you'd have to try and prop up somewhere on your monitor and then the camera quality was shocking like 1 or 2mp so everything was pixelated and blue and would freeze every five seconds. I remember we used to move super fast when we froze so it would look like we teleported to the other side of the screen when it unfroze. I was a cool 12 year old.

    Back in probably 2007/08, I was friends with two guys I met on a The Legend of Zelda fan forum and we had an ICQ (which, to the uninitiated with ICQ, worked with arbitrary numbers instead of usernames) group chat called "The Triumvirate of Evil" where we brainstormed ideas for future Zelda dungeons and talked about hobbies, school and other stuff like that. So dorky and cringe-y.
    And of course I also used ICQ to ask classmates for homework and to annoy my sister xD

    I'm so sorry to hear you got dumped by text! That's a horrible way of breaking up! :(
    I didn't get on the Internet until 1997, and I didn't use it much until 2009. Sorry! All my early experiences were pretty nice ones. I didn't start "living online" until 2014, so I don't have any MSN or other types of stories.

    I recently decided to try and go back on habbo and trusty old me, I got back into my account from 2010, it hasn't changed and the text language is still very common and it's kind of the same.

      Maybe make a video about it? Just an idea, the interface is confusing though. You replying made my day by the way :)

    Omg, MSN. Did anyone else use so many of those flashing, blinking text emoticons that it was almost impossible to read what you had written?

    I met a lot of friends on a forum once... Oh yeah, forums... I'm still friends with one or two of them. We talked every day, and looking back, I was actually really funny and eloquent for a 14-year-old. I used a lot of slang words and niche phrasings that I completely forgot about since then. The only problem was that one of the group chats became quite toxic at some point, and even though everybody supported each other, it still felt like we weren't helping much. A lot of us started self-harming and the conversation revolved around that a lot, and one of us, a girl with leukemia -if that was true-, went offline and we thought she died. Maybe she did, I don't know.

    My very first chat room experience: a friend of mine and myself were chatting with a guy and it was leading nowhere good. He at one point asked us our bra sizes and since we were too young to really know (maybe 12?) we asked her older sister what to reply with. I look back at that with the most cringe - what was I doing?!

    I once was at a friend's place who recently invested in a cam. We went online to chat with people, and after a quick "asl" we put our cam on with a girl. It turns out she showed us her bits, but the resolution was too crappy for us to realise that in less than a minute or so.

    when i played habbo when i was like 11 i catfished someone (by making up like 50 different people/accounts and using all those accounts at different points) and i felt really bad about it because i thought i was hurting a family of like 50 other people, turned out this girl was doing the same thing to me and she was the same age as me. shortly after, we became best friends. we stopped speaking like 2 years ago when we were 15 but it's still one of the weirdest moments. catfishing is bad dont do it kids.

    I played Habbo Hotel when I was 11 and once used £3 of my phone credit in order to buy a bed. I can even remember exactly what bed it was, the pink 'cubie' one because I just thought it looked like a cool teenager cabin bed kind of thing. My mum then looked at my phone statement and asked me what the £3 was for and I pretended I didn't know. Lying about that was scary, but less so than telling her I had spent actual money on a pixelated computer game where you could talk to strangers completely uncensored.
