  • Kings Dominion is a large amusement park in Doswell, Virginia. This park was previously owned by Paramount, but it was purchased by Cedar Fair in 2006. The park features a few lightly themed areas and an interesting coaster lineup with one of the best 1-2 punches in the world.

I believe that Kings Dominion and Six Flags New England are tied for the best One-Two Punch in North America. A large-scale Intamin and an RMC will always complement each other.

I like Superman better than anything at Kings Dominion, but I prefer Kings Dominion's 1-2 punch because their two rides are quite a bit better than Wicked Cyclone.
I may prefer the 1-2 punches of a few other parks like Energylandia, Magic Mountain, Cedar Point, Fiesta Texas, and Hershey, but Kings Dominion is absolutely in that conversation.

With the record for the most launch coasters in history, one of the best one two punches, and the longest floorless coaster. Kings Dominion is great fun. I wouldn't be surprised if this park is overall better than KI. If you want mad intensity, ride I305, if you want non stop ejector airtime, ride TT. If you want s not super forcefull ride, ride Dominator or Anaconda. So much to love here and they take care of it well, they could just really use an invert to replace Volcano.

My last hypersonic memory (home park):
Waiting 1.5 hours, sitting on the launch platform, getting pulled back to the station from a breakdown. Coming back later in the day, waiting 1.5 hours, sitting in the car of the station ready to dispatch, for it to break down. I don’t personally miss it but it was a cool/unique coaster to have.

@@CanobieCoaster Right now my plan is Friday drive to Busch and get a 2 day ticket if I can make it there by 4-5. I’m a single rider, so that takes care of the B&M, but I’m just not sure if a Saturday will be enough for a first time visit to soak up everything. KD I’m not as worried about since I’m a Plat Pass owner that’s been before, but I’d love to marathon I305 and hopefully do a half day before I head home.

I know I'm way late to this party, but Berserker needs a shout out. It's the last remaining inverting looping starship (or inverting pirate ship) in North America. Especially if you sit with your back to the Eiffel Tower, so when it goes upside down you just see the Eiffel Tower flipped. It's so crazy good.

You do have more experience here than me, so I feel that I've just been lucky here with Twisted Timbers. I have never had more than a station wait. All my days have been Mon-Thu. I basically have never had more than a 3-train wait on anything. Rain threats in 2018 kept crowds away, and 100 degree days in 2021 kept the crowd in the waterpark. That waterpark had huge lines on that visit, but almost no lines in 2018 with highs around 80.
I love this park too much. Just thinking of this place warms my heart every time. I love the feel & atmosphere, and the setting being nestled in the forest is far superior than when it's in the middle of a suburb or city. All that plus the minimal lines, well-rounded lineup, and my favorite 1-2 punch, I have had 5 of my best park days ever here. That consistent great time has this as my favorite Cedar Fair park. I know the overall lineup isn't nearly as strong as Cedar Point, but it's the other things that put this over the top for me. Basically what people will say about Kings Island and why they like it more than Cedar Point, I say that about Kings Dominion, as it fits more of my personal preferences.

    • @CanobieCoaster
      @CanobieCoaster  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Weekends can get busier (as with most parks). Twisted Timbers is one of the first rides to get a line if the park starts getting busy due to its quality and capacity. I agree it's nice that lines usually aren't a major issue.

I've been there a few times this season and most of the time the lines are minimal, but I had to wait 45 or so minutes for Dominator and I had a few other long waits that day.

My first time here in 2008 was last second as we needed something to do on our way back to Washington DC from Williamsburg but it was a disaster as it was incredibly crowded (in all fairness we went on a summer Saturday) and everything broke down near the end of the day. But when I saw a promo for Intimidator 305 the following year, I immediately wanted to come back and give it a second chance. It took us until 2013 to do that but it was absolutely worth it as we managed to do everything repeatedly the whole day. It's now currently my third favorite Cedar Fair park behind the two in Ohio.

This video is right on. Perfect strategy tips too. Visited on Thursday 8/11/22 and Saturday 8/13/22. Every single coaster was a walk-on Thursday. Saturday had a sizeable crowd, but the park can handle it due to the huge acreage, wide walkways, and quantity of rides. It didn't feel crowded walking around on Saturday and with Fast Lane Plus there were just station waits. Tumbili, Reptilian, and Dominator had hour waits without Fast Lane though. Twisted Timbers queue wasn't too bad and i305 was just a station wait.
Grain and Grill is wonderful, arguably the second best restaurant in the Cedar Fair chain. The whole park feels underrated in general. I have it at #4 in the Cedar Fair chain, and would easily choose this park over Busch Gardens Williamsburg on most days. BGW is prettier and has a superior top 5 coaster lineup, but it can't handle crowds very well - the narrow walkways get packed and even the B&M's can balloon to 60-75 minute waits (as was the case Friday 8/12/22). The Kings Dominion employees are much friendlier and more competent than the bored, resentful young adults staffing BGW as of 2022.
In terms of rides-per-hour and overall fun, KD is a must visit. It does have a few garbage rides, but even Anaconda and Grizzly are so rough they're actually fun if you treat them as a game to see how much pain you can take. Racer 75 is weak on air time, but even there, a young man pulled out his vape pen torch on the ride and it was really funny (wife not amused, which made it funnier). Reptilian is one of a kind - perfect family ride, and the short lines on i305, and sometimes Twisted Timbers, are incredible for how good those rides are.

I Love This Park It Was My Home Park For 3 Years When I Moved From Florida To Georgia Then To Virginia Then Back To Georgia I Can't Stay In One State And This All Spanned Between 9 Years Okay ANYWAYS COASTERSSSSSSSSS There Isn't A Bad Coaster Here In My Opinion All Of The Top Tier Cedar Fair Parks Have Some Extremely Bad Coasters *Cough Cedar Point Cough* *Cough Kings Island Cough* *Cough Carowinds Cough* *Cough Canada's Wonderland *Cough
13 Great Pumpkin Coaster: Haven't Ridden This But Its Said To Be Pretty Good But Its Just A Kiddie Coaster So........
12 Woodstock Express: I Got No Airtime But I Can Appreciate It For Its Laterals And Pacing
11 Apple Zapple: My Favorite Wild Mouse Even Though Its Just A Wild Mouse I Can't Rank It Higher
10 Backlot Stunt Coaster: This Is The Worst Backlot Stunt Coaster Because The Launches Is A Bit Weaker And Its Less Forceful For Some Reason But It Still Has Great Theming
9 Anaconda: The Second Half Of This Ride Is Horrible Its Extremely Rough Janky Forceless And Boring But That First Half Is The Opposite So I Place It Higher Then Most People I Also Love It Since Its Placed Over Water
8 Grizzly: It Is Worth Noting I Haven't Ridden This Since 2014 So I Might Think Its Rough If I Get A Re-Ride But I Remember It Being Pretty Smooth And It Had Some Weak Floater But I Remember It Being Really Forceless And Kinda Boring I Still Like Forceless Coasters If Their Smooth And Have Some Airtime Its Like A At Least You Tried Award
7 Tumbili: Weakest Free Spin Heavily Trimmed And Kinda Forceless But I Love The Well Free Spin Aspect Of These And They Are Kind Of My Biggest Guilty Pleasure After Cyclone (Luna Park) Clones Although No Of These Free Spins Are In My Top 100 All Free Spins Are At Least In My Top 125
6 Flight Of Fear: I Prefer The Outdoor Version Of This Ride So You Can See All The Headchoppers But This Is Still A Fun Kinda Janky Spaghetti Bowl Premier Rides Coaster
5 Reptillian: One Of The Most Underrated Coasters I Like This Mack Bobsled It Isn't As Forceless As Some People Say And I Love The Out Of Control Feeling Of Not Being On The Track
4 Racer 75: I Love Dueling Coasters I Have Twisted Colossus In My Top 10 Without The Dueling It Would Drop To Probably Top 30 At Most And This Ride Sadly Doesn't Race Much Despite The Name Anyways On To The Layout It Has Some Flo-jecter Airtime Paired With Great Laterals Its Also One Of The Smoothest Wooden Coasters I've Ridden Which Very Much Helps It
3 Dominator: I Want To Have This As My Favorite Floorless It Has A Layout Surpassing Kraken And Its Super Long But Its Only My 4th Favorite Floorless After Kraken Superman Krypton Coaster And Medusa (Discovery Kingdom) Because Of How Forceless It Is ITS One Of The Most Forceless Coasters In The World And I Don't Know Why Kraken And Medusa Are Extremely Forceful And Has Some Weak Floater Airtime
2 Twisted Timbers: On To The Coasters Actually In My Top 100 Dominator Is My Overall 118 Coaster And Twisted Timbers Is My Overall 18 Coaster This Ride Has Airtime That Could Rival Iron Gwazi And Steel Vengeance Despite Being 100 Feet Shorter This Coaster Is Just Airtime Airtime Airtime Then Inversion So Amazing And Its A Top Tier RMC
1 Intimdator 305: The 300 Ft Speed And Intensity Monster Is Obviously Number One On My Kings Dominion List It Has Super Really Underrated Airtime Including The World Class First Drop The First Camelback And The Trim Hill But The Best Airtime Moment Isnt Even Traditional Its Switchbacks These Switchbacks Are In My Top 3 Favorite Elements Ever After The Death Roll On Iron Gwazi And The Outerbanked Hill On Steel Vengeance This Ride Also Is Usually A Walk On And Never Gets A Line And Unlike Most Propel I Can Marathon In I Got 19 Rides In A Row In 2022 Even Though I'm Hyping This Ride Up I Think The Intensity Does Work Too Its Downfall Since It Could Get Removed Due To Guest Demand

Just went yesterday, first time visiting since 2017. Had a great time. Tumbili kinda sucked IMO but I appreciate that they repainted Avalanche to Reptilian because I always feared they'd get rid of that coaster (i love bobsleds, so smooth) but that investment seems to say otherwise. I Love I305 and we hit Twisted Timbers up last before leaving and were able to get 3 back-to-back rides in with no wait. IMO KD is one of the most underrated parks and its sad it doesn't get more visitors but it is obviously because of Busch Gardens proximity. I hope Cedar Fair continues their investment in it because the low visitors = more enjoyment for those that don't have to wait in lines (^_^)

Local to the area, King's Dominion is definitely the better park for kids, as there's much more for them to do there. BGW has kids rides peppered throughout the park, but if you have a budding (and short) coaster enthusiast, KD is definitely the better park for them.
As for the Haunt and Winterfest, the park gets packed hard. I305 was over an hour wait on one of my visits, but it's definitely a thrilling ride at night, the entire layout is unlit, so you experience everything in the dark. Grizzly does not operate during Haunt (at night), as the old Dinosaurs Alive next to it becomes a Haunt walk-through attraction in the woods.
Winterfest was pretty neat, though part of the kids area and all of Jungle X-pedition were blocked off, the lights were definitely the main draw, the Blue Ridge Turnpike (antique cars) were decorated with a ride through light show as well. Twisted Timbers was open, but I opted out of a

    Canobie Coaster would say: No, it used to be R _ _ _ _ _ _ _ .
Do you know which word is missing? It starts with an R.

See in RCDB. Apple Zapple at Kings Dominion and Coast Rider at Knott's Berry Farm. Since the two are Mack wild mouse coasters (large park model), I think they look rideable. See your video of top 25 worst roller coasters in the world (2020), Canobie Coaster. Apple Zapple was not placed in that video, but Coast Rider was. So if I ask you:
Why did not place Apple Zapple in that list video, but why did you place Coast Rider there? As seen in RCDB, both are Mack wild mouse coasters (large park model).

Coast Rider has shin guards unlike the other mice and they hurt.

Has Kings Dominion removed Fast Lane Plus? I plan to go in June, and all I see is the regular fast lane. And there are a handful of coasters(not the big 2) not on the list.

They do have a lot of lower capacity coasters missing from Fast Lane unfortunately. And they only have one tier now.

@@CanobieCoaster I have always preferred Mille as well, until the end of last season. And actually my "favorite" ride in the park is Valraven 🤣 (I'm going to lose my ACE membership over this comment🤣) I don't know, I admit that if I could only ride one ride forever, it would be StEVe, it's the greatest ride in the world! Maverick and Mille are better coasters than Valravan, but still the fact remains even though Valravan is not as good of a coaster, it's still my favorite🤷🏽‍♂️🤷🏽‍♂️🤷🏽‍♂️

I see the park actually does claim over 20 airtime moments on TT. And yet the 20 from the original teasers include every inversion, the 2 quarter turns and the brake run. To get any more you'd have to include the drop off the lift into the turnaround or the overbank turn. I don't know why that wasn't enough for Marketing.

    • @CanobieCoaster
      @CanobieCoaster  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

It's a lot of airtime however you measure it.

Kings Dominion is awesome! As you mentioned in the review, Backlot Stunt Coaster's helix is so intense. I greyed out 2 of my 4 rides on it. I agree that Grizzly is the best wood coaster in the park, but Racer 75 has a few moments of good airtime especially in one of the rows I rode in.

Kings Dominion is a good park I went last summer and got to ride Intimadator 305 amazing coaster Dominator is my 2nd Favorite floorless Flight Of Fear is decent not that great Anaconda is underrated and I finnaly get to feel what the Great AMERICAN Scream Machine at Six Flags Great Adventure was like sence I was to young to ride it. Backlot is a good ride best family coaster I've ridden probaly. Grizzly is a good wooden coaster and Rebel Yell is nice and smooth.

So annoyed I was so rushed at this park. Every coaster had a 30+ minute wait (Yes, even Anaconda had a huge line and Grizzly had slower dispatches that resulted in a longer wait), and I wasn’t able to ride all of the coasters even with the FastLane Plus.
